Cut down, why?
[edit]This article has been cut down anonymously a few times, deleting NPOV background data (such as real name Ian Olsen). The anon. prefers to list recent projects only, suggesting possible self-promotion. I suggest reinstatement of much of the previously deleted information. Design 02:21, 10 October 2005 (UTC)
- I have reinstated Ollie's birth-name Ian whcih was removed agian buy an anonymous editor.--Design (talk) 11:29, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
External links section
[edit]The External links section was sorely in need of expansion, as it only included a single link for a related artist—it was not even for the artist who is the subject of the article. I have inserted three additional links, as Olsen is a prolific, influential artist with an extensive history.--Soulparadox (talk) 08:17, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
COI issue current?
[edit]The article's had substantial rewriting by experienced Wikipedians who know the area. Do we still need the COI tag? - David Gerard (talk) 18:12, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
- @David Gerard: I've removed the COI tag from the article and added a connected contributor 'plate above.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 23:35, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

Ollie's correct and legal name and place of birth
[edit]Ollie's legal name is: Ollie Jngbert Christian Olsen. It was legally changed in about 1990. Any edits people have made in the past to this page in regards to Ollie's name, will have been because they know this to be factual. Ollie released Whirlywirld material under the name: "Ian" but obviously Ollie has since changed their name. Most material released by Olsen is under the name: Ollie Olsen. Ollie was born in Melbourne, Australia not Norway. Ollie had a parent of Norwegian descent, since deceased.

- The 2nd Edn of Ian McFarlane's encyclopaedia confirms the usage of Ian "Ollie" Olsen. It updates information about his year of birth, place of birth and descent. It is now included in the article. A ref from Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA) gives his full name as Olsen, Ollie Jngbert Christian and this is returned to the article.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 23:01, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
Birth name and year of birth
[edit]@Toddst1: could you explain why the subject's birth name has been removed from the Lead and birth year from the infobox. I don't see any problem at WP:DOB (only birth year is used here, not the full date) and I see no problem at WP:BLP. His name, at about 1989, is seen in numerous on-line sites, which give song writing credits for his work for Max Q and other earlier bands. As indicated above, his birth year is in the 2nd edn of McFarlane's encyclopaedia, a page no. is cited in the wp article. McFarlane refers to him as Ian "Ollie" Olsen.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 09:36, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
- Then you should add it back and cite it using a non-primary source. I didn't see 1958 mentioned in any of the sources supporting that sentence. Toddst1 (talk) 16:35, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
- As indicated above, 1958, is in McFarlane's 2nd Edn (not the online version), where he corrects the lead-in sentence of his 1st Edn entry (the online one). It is currently part of ref [1]. This difference between the two editions is already mentioned in a note in the article. McFarlane is a non-primary source. I will now fix the article.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 20:49, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
- This is without a doubt, the definition of a WP:BLPPRIMARY. (currently ref 2). I don't understand why you added the year of birth back without citing it. It's been removed again. Please don't add it back without citing it. Toddst1 (talk) 22:42, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Toddst1: What about ref [1], which I expanded in October 2020, here. Once again, McFarlane's 2nd Edn (2017) is a reliable secondary source and was updated from the on-line (1999) version. Specifically he changed the lead-in sentence from, "Norwegian-born, Melbourne-bred musician Ian 'Ollie' Olsen is recognised as one of the key figures in the Australian post-punk electronic movement of the late 1970s." to "Norwegian-descended Melbourne-born musician, Ian 'Ollie' Olsen (b. 1958) is recognised as one of the key figures in the Australian post-punk electronic movement of the late 1970s." McFarlane states that Olsen was born in Melbourne in 1958: how is this a WP:BLPPRIMARY?
- When an otherwise reliable source (McFarlane) is incorrect this is commonly pointed out in a comment/note on that source. I did this by appending such a note to the McFarlane ref [1].
- As for source [2], I did add it, incorrectly, later that same day. That source and related content was correctly removed by you, also on the same day, here. You later removed the DOB and other tainted content. However, a bot returned source [2] about half an hour after your last edit on that day, see here. I did not return ref [2].01:24, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- I indicated above that I was using McFarlane's 2nd edn to verify his birth year of 1958. Ref [2] is not needed for his birth year. I returned his birth year based on McFarlane, which is a direct secondary source, albeit it is not online. Returning his birth year is not vandalism nor unconstructive editing. Please withdraw your allegation "Caution: Unconstructive editing on Ollie Olsen" from my talkpage or take the matter up with AN1 or other processes if you feel the need to do so. Please return birth year (and other content) recently reverted, here.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 01:21, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- It is still not sourced. We source things to WP:VERIFY facts. If I came upon that article, there is no attribution in the article for the year of birth.
- Second, if you add [1] as the source and anyone tries to verify that fact, they would be directed to the 1st edition which does not support the year of birth being 1958, so it would be tagged
{{fv}}
. - Could you please fix it so that it has a viable source or revert your edit? Putting the info on the talk page is not sufficient. Toddst1 (talk) 20:23, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- I have trimmed the McFarlane ref, i.e. ref [1], to just the 2nd Edn. It verifies his descent, birth place and birth year.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 20:16, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
