Merge
[edit]Merged bar pilot and harbour pilot (containing mostly the same text) into maritime pilot, as per Talk:Bar pilot#Merge proposal. It’s still not a very good article; it’s missing references and is barely more than a stub.
In accordance with WP:NOT#LINK, I have removed most of the links and images in the original articles. The removed links are:
- American Pilots Association
- Australian Marine Pilots Association
- Biscayne Bay Pilots
- Boston Pilot Association
- Columbia River Bar Pilots
- Columbia River Pilots
- Corporation of Lower St Lawrence Pilots
- Honolulu Pilots
- Houston Pilots
- Association of Maryland Pilots
- Northeast Marine Pilots
- Norwegian Pilots
- Puget Sound Pilots
- Sandy Hook Pilots
- San Francisco Bar Pilots
- Savannah Pilots Association
- Western Great Lakes Pilots
The removed images are:
- Image:uptheladder.jpg “Columbia River Bar Pilot boarding a bulk carrier at sea?
- Image:Pilot boat.JPG “Pilot boat Apollo, Rotterdam, is equipped with many railings to give pilots handholds while transferring.?
- Image:Clyde pilot boat July06.jpg “Pilot boat Mount Stuart heads out on the Firth of Clyde.?
- Image:Pilot Boat HFX 2007.jpg “Pilot boat at Halifax Harbour, Halifax, Nova Scotia.?

- Also merged Marine Pilots into this page, as this appears to be a synonym. Anaxial (talk) 18:45, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- It seems to me that it a list of pilotage organizations might be at home in a section of the article that describes how pilotage is organized. Mention might also be made of the main international groupings of pilots: namely EMPA and IMPA. Other topics that might be touched on are PECs, shore-assisted pilotage and shore-based pilotage. Everybody got to be somewhere! (talk) 22:02, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
Add sections for specific pilot types.
[edit]As per note in Talk:Bar pilot the following are suggested:
- Sea Pilots (e.g. [1]),
- Bar Pilots (e.g. [2],
- River Pilots (e.g. [3] and [4]),
- Canal Pilots (e.g. [5] and [6]),
- Harbour & Docking Pilots (e.g. [7]).
However, some pilotages perform all these activities within a single group of pilots (e.g. [8].

- This would of course be useful, if someone wrote more than three words about the specifics of each type. :-) -Ahruman 09:52, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
This edit by an IP user was later claimed by JaAllen54 who posted this message on my talk page. I advised that I would clarify my position here on the article talk page. Hopefully other interested editors will also contribute to the discussion here.
To JaAllen54: Some of the edits you made to correct facts were probably acceptable if you provide a reliable source for those facts. However much of what you posted failed to adhere to a neutral point of view and was just your opinion, albeit from the voice of experience. Posting one's own experiences is not allowed on Wikipedia, it's what we call original research. I would encourage you to help improve this article by adding factual material supported by reliable sources in accordance with the Wikipedia Manual of Style. I will be watching this page and will be happy to discuss any of these things. I also posted a Welcome message to your talk page which contains many useful links to help learn your way around Wikipedia. I hope you enjoy contributing and please let me know if I can help. — Bill W. (Talk) (Contrib) — 00:15, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for the response. Again, I am not sure if I am taking the correct avenue to even respond to your comment, but I am giving it a try. I hope to eventually pick-up the basics on using this site as more than just a "read only" page. Also, I will try to find a way to cite these sources so we know they are concrete facts and not opinions. Until that time, however, I feel that it is important to change the description for two, critical points. 1. There is zero sea time requirement to become a "Maritime Pilot." SOME associations require it as company policy, but MOST do not. If you reference USCG, IMO, or CFR requirements, you will not find any for Pilotage. You will only find them for Mate (Pilot) of towing vessel which is different. 2. The Pilot is NEVER in control of the ship. They are hired on their local knowledge of the geography ONLY. That is why the USCG license question which I sent to you as a reference explains that Pilots advice can be overridden by ANY crew member if they feel risk is involved. Again, I am working on concrete facts to support this either way. Because of this, I would suggest that these two, and supporting, topics be deleted altogether. Again, these are very well known facts in the industry, and can be very dangerous if taken the wrong way. Thank you again-JaAllen64 (talk) 13:46, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
- I appreciate what you're saying, but in order to add these items to the article you will need to find reliable sources that support your statements. I suggest reading Wikipedia:Reliable sources and Wikipedia:Citing sources for details on how to do this within Wikipedia policies. I have no particular interest in this topic, it's just an article that I happened to need one day and have taken an interest in. This is common around Wikipedia. That's why reliable sources are so important. It is impossible on the Internet to determine who is an expert and who is not. But we CAN determine if a source is reliable per the article mentioned above. All we need is a valid citation to a reliable source and any pertinent information can be added to the article to improve it. I hope that clarifies the situation for you. If you need any help with adding the citations you find, please ask here and I or another editor will assist.
- One more thing, it is important that a Wikipedia article have a worldwide viewpoint. Just because certain customs or business practices are common in the U.S. does not mean they are the only customs or practices that are important to the article. Please try to take a worldwide viewpoint when adding information to the article. — Bill W. (Talk) (Contrib) — 14:55, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
