List of cities in the UK and some that are in places of limited independence from the UK but are not in the UK
[edit]The article has sections and entries dedicated to cities that clearly do not meet the inclusion criteria as stated in the title. As an encyclopaedia, we should aim for precision and accuracy. So it seems that either the article should be renamed, or the non UK sites should be removed (although a sentence stating that UK authorities also nominate city status elsewhere would seem reasonable). But which? Kevin McE (talk) 10:46, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- Wouldn't remove altogether, ideally those want splitting out to an article as it's so long already, although a note added to the existing overseas text is ok. We've had opponents speak up when editors tried to revert such changes as here, and along with all the excitement with overseas locations included for the first time in last year's competition, the sections ended up remaining.
- Another related chat was about writing up a history on the development of British Empire cities, see here, but if just focused on moving the list fine, although the main Cities article has overseas sections too (one of which was added by an admin), some of which relate to Empire development, maybe split those out and add the list at the end? - Errors made because people are animated by something in the news should not determine the content of an encyclopaedia. Let's apply a standard of verifiable truth. It is verifiably untrue that Douglas and Stanley are in the UK. Kevin McE (talk) 18:21, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

"De facto" v "de jure"
[edit]The section "list of cities" needs a hatnote to explain the basis that determines them. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 09:20, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
- It's starting to get complicated again, but I've gone with it and done a tidy up on the table with added explanatory footnotes. The list on gov.uk should be a model though as it is far simpler. The Equalizer (talk) 22:44, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
Is the City of London really a city?
[edit]I might be wrong about this but from my understanding the City of London isn’t officially a city but just called that to I guess differentiate itself from London proper Why cant i think of a username that doesnt already exist (talk) 22:50, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
- You meant the other way round.
- "London proper" is the City of London, "the square mile", the one next door to the City of Westminster, is a cathedral city (though it was a city before St Paul's was built.
- Greater London is not a city according to city status in the United Kingdom, but don't tell the rest of the world that. By every other measure, it is a city.
- That help? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 00:05, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, thank you for the explanation Why cant i think of a username that doesnt already exist (talk) 12:46, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
- Following the format of the table, it would be better to say that Greater London is a de facto city and the City of London is a de jure city. --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 15:47, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

London
[edit]how come that population of London is only 12k, making it one of the snallest cities in UK??? Is this a misprint, or is the city of London just a tiny part of London? The link for city of London refers to the great city of London. 90.231.65.65 (talk) 22:41, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- Because the City of London (pop 12k) is just one of the legal cities that comprise Greater London, which is I suspect what you are thinking of. The problem is the legal definition and common usage differ. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 23:58, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
