[edit]The Bank Of America tower was NOT the tallest in New England when built.
http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=122589 <----- Traveller's Tower in Hartford 161 meters, built before BOA building in Providence
http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=125380 <----- BOA building in Providence 128 Meters
Also, the zip code is 02903, not whatever it was posted as. Who put this page together?
- I see emporis has clear counterexamples to this being the tallest building in New England, but if you read Woodward, William McKenzie (2003). PPS/AIAri Guide to Providence Architecture. Providence, RI: Providence Preservation Society. p. 101. ISBN 0-9742847-0-X., you'll see Woodward making claims to the contrary:
“ | The Providence skyline's most identifiable eminence was planned and built as the tallest building in New England, a distinction it retained for more than twenty years. | ” |
- -p101
- What do we make of this? Do we assume McKenzie hasn't done his homework?--Loodog 21:00, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
Airship / Blimp dock?
[edit]I have heard several times that the building's upper stepped section was designed as a docking point for airships, though never used for this purpose. Does anyone have any thoughts on tracking down a reliable source for this claim? Dialectric (talk) 15:07, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
- This is widely rumored, but I don't know how true it is. The only source I could find.--Louiedog (talk) 15:15, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
- And I guess that source came from here.--Louiedog (talk) 15:16, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
I found this link [1] today (and came here looking for more info). I assume the Providence Journal would be a reputable source. ~ Brother William (talk) 22:27, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Article move
[edit]Can we move the page from Bank of America Building (Providence) to 111 Westminster Street , Bank of America vacated the building yesterday (April 12, 2013) at 2PM and the building is now empty. http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/2013/04/12/superman-building-tallest-now-closed/tsr2pqqC8grmqxb1HsvMTJ/story.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.62.232.12 (talk) 20:43, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
"111 Westminster Street" is not what this building is known as
[edit]I don't think it's a stretch to say that nobody thinks of this building as "111 Westminster Street".
I suggest we move it to Industrial Trust Building, which is building's the original name. It is more evocative and more commonly used than "111 Westminster Street". example 1, and example 2. Even the New York Times in 2013 said it is "officially called the Industrial National Bank Building". [1]
Locally, it is widely known as the "Superman Building" and every article about it uses that nomenclature. Even Google Maps calls it the Superman Building. Arguably, it's a dumb name, and certainly not official, but that's what everyone calls it. - Kzirkel (talk) 16:04, 19 February 2017 (UTC)
- I moved the article to "Industrial National Bank Building", since this is the name the New York Times says is "official", and since this garners a few thousand more hits than "Industrial Trust Building". "Superman Building" does garner far more hits than both, though.--Tdl1060 (talk) 06:49, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
