Seth Killian as founder?

[edit]

Seth Killian should be mentioned in this article as he is the founder of the tournament 24.14.22.168 (talk) 08:07, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's generally recognized that the tournament is actually founded by Tom Cannon, Tony Cannon and Joey Cuellar. In general, the tournament is the brainchild of the Cannons. --nothingxs 17:39, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of the Bay

Latif's Nationality

[edit]

There seems to be some debate on the subject of Latif's nationality. To my knowledge, he's a full American citizen but there seems to be a constituent that insists that he lives in Arizona on a Student/Tourist visa. Is there any way this can be cleared up? Ganshenme (talk) 12:05, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've heard of this, but I don't see it anywhere. He is going the represent the US at SBO, so I think he should be kept as American until further notice. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 20:47, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And speaking of nationality, there's seems to be a little controversy over PR Rog. Yeah, it's "Puerto Rican Balrog", but doesn't he live in the U.S.? The flags are for nationality, not ethnicity. Any word on that? TheStickMan[✆Talk] 00:21, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Here's my $0.02 on this (and yes, I've been the stickler about this that has been editing anonymously. I just signed up an account to talk here). Latif's nationality is Saudi Arabian. He may have been living in America during Evo 2011 and MAYBE Evo 2009 (Although Skisonic talked to him about tech he developed for Guilty Gear in Saudi, that may have been before he moved to the States for school.) Given that he did not have citizenship, he should not be considered as American, but Saudi.
Some examples in point:
1. Infiltration is Korean, (hypothetically) moves to America for a year to study English. Does well in Evo, makes top 8. Should he be considered American since he was living here during Evo?
2. I'm an American, yet I live in China for work. I come to Evo, and make Top 8. Should I be considered Chinese since I was living there during Evo?
3. Kim Yu-na is a Korean figure skater, yet trained and lived full time in Canada prior to the Vancouver Olympics. Should she have been listed as representing Canada for her Olympic gold medal, despite her nationality?
If you answer no to any of these three questions, then Latif should be considered Saudi for nationality sake. Moreover, the SRK World Rankings page lists Latif as Saudi, so I think it's right to consider him Saudi.
SBO representation does not confirm nationality. I could just as well qualify for SBO in Japan or Korea as a Westerner, but it doesn't make me Japanese or Korean, does it? Passport confirms nationality. Latif has a Saudi passport.
PR Balrog is a more difficult one to answer though. I see both cases, as he is from Puerto Rico, yet all Puerto Ricans have US Citizenship and can live freely in America without applying for a Visa or citizenship. At the worst, you put up both flags, but I suppose the same would have to go for Flocker as well. I guess for this one, it's a delicate situation as to where he's living at the time of Evo, only to change if Puerto Rico eventually gains statehood.
Another one that may be in question though is Issei, as I believe he was a Japanese university student studying in New York during Evo 2009. I haven't changed that since I don't know that to be a fact. --MissingPersonSRK (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 14:48, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that was you? Huh.
I guess it makes more sense if you put it that way. I vaguely remember Latif calling himself "American" at some point, but I'm probably making that up, and it doesn't really matter at this point, so oh well.
I saw putting US flags for Flocker/Rog as the "safe" choice, but I guess that's not the case.
No clue about Issei Suzuki. You're talking to a '10er here, lolol. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 19:50, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

He is from Jubail, Saudi Arabia, and is studying abroad in the USA. He is a Saudi national to the best of my knowledge. --Humuphile (talk) 16:55, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

EvoTrending topics on Twitter not a sign of impact and growth?

[edit]

Yeah there's a lot of nonsense that trends most of the time, but EVO tweets trending is surely a note worthy sign of the times? — Preceding unsigned comment added by FLStyle (talkcontribs) 23:08, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are already far better indicators of a larger impact of fighting games (or perhaps, e-sports in general) today. Destructoid, G4, GameSpot were there, and even IGN did some minor coverage. Developers held conferences there. It was the largest Evo ever. It was streamed on PS Home. Over 40 countries participated. Like I said before, tons of stuff already trend on Twitter, but you don't read about that on most articles on here. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 23:24, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Team Abbreviations in Aliases

[edit]

In the top 8 lists for each event, team abbreviations in aliases start showing up in 2010. Team abbreviations can be difficult to understand for the uninitiated, and should be explained if possible. I was also considering linking the first instance of EG to Evil Geniuses since the team has its own page. Thoughts?

Misc

[edit]

Looking at the article while trying to figure out what to do about team name prefixes has led me to a couple of unrelated observations:

  • There are two different types of tables in use currently. We should probably pick one and stick with it.
    • Related: No matter which one we pick, the page feels really weird with all of the tables left aligned and with vastly different widths. Some kind of formatting would make the page much easier to read.
  • Linking is inconsistent.
    • Super Street Fighter II Turbo is linked twice out of its 3 instances
    • Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 is never linked.
    • I added a link on the first instance of Daigo Umehara last week on the assumption that only the first instance in the article should be linked. Now someone has added a link on the second instance, but not any of the subsequent ones.
  • A few character names are linked. This is seemingly at random. Perhaps links to the character lists for the various games (such as List of Street Fighter characters) in a see also section would be more appropriate?

For the tables, I like the class="wikitable" ones (I think they are newer). I'm not sure what to do with the formatting. I think centering them and giving them a set width would be excellent, but I'm not sure what the common choice is here. For the links, I think it might be useful to treat each table as separate and therefore link Daigo's name in each set of results. This will make the standings easier to navigate as more and more players become notable enough to have their own pages. I also think it would be useful to link the game titles in each result table's header rather than just the first instance. However, it was my understanding that linking an item multiple times in the same article breaks policy.

Also, should we include a note about the Virtua Fighter 5 and Skullgirls side tournaments at EVO 2012? They seem like they might have greater importance than regular side tournaments since they both featured prizes from the development companies.

Radicaledward101 (talk) 18:18, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For the point about the two types of tables, I was in the process of making the tables neater about a year ago. Then I got lazy. That's why the ones in the middle have not yet been changed. By all means, please fix those tables. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 12:51, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the Evolution 2002 tables to wikitables with fixed column widths, which in my opinion look better and allow for a little bit of standardization. I'm looking for feedback on both the overall look of the tables and on the column widths. If people like how those tables look, I'll change all the rest. CaSJer (talk) 17:30, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Totals

[edit]

I got bored and counted the amount of first place wins by country:

  • USA - 34
  • Japan - 30
  • Korea - 6
  • France - 3
  • UK - 2
  • Saudi Arabia - 1

Do you guys think these stats would make for an interesting part of the page? (I double checked these, but I might need to go over the page again just to make sure) 24.18.50.139 (talk) 16:19, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

To be quite honest, no. These stats are skewed by the vast majority of players present at Evo being American, the varying popularity of certain games in different countries (such as Marvel 2/3, MK), the longtime establishment of the Japanese scene as opposed to the European/Korean ones, etc. Sorry. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 16:35, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's all good, I was gonna count them anyway so I figured I might as well see if they could be used in some way. Peace :) 24.18.50.139 (talk) 16:42, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ricky Ortiz

[edit]

This is me in full OCD mode, but reading through the article, it looks like Ricky Ortiz shows up as Helokitty 5 times and as Hellokitty 4 times, and the capitalization is also inconsistent. Can someone that's familiar with the 2D scene let me know which is correct, and I'll standardize them all? CaSJer (talk) 17:10, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to do a very un-Wikipedia thing and point to Ricky's Twitter for the "main" spelling: "HelloKitty". Some alt spellings seem to be misspellings from past editors and from people on the SRK forums (where, since it's a forum, not many people care much about proper spelling). Other than that, I got nothing. :/ TheStickMan[✆Talk] 02:16, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Twitter's good enough for me, heh. I changed all the 2002-2009 aliases to HelloKitty, and the 2010-present aliases to EG Ricky Ortiz, since it seems like including the sponsor name is the convention. I may mess around with more alias standardization later - it looks like it's pretty messy across the board. CaSJer (talk) 13:48, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ricky Ortiz now identifies herself as female, as well as being spelled "Ricki Ortiz". Please use this spelling when referring to Ricki. Her alias should now be EG Ricki Ortiz. UltraDark:) 2 CHAT 13:36, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Splitting off results?

[edit]

I feel like at some point the results for Evo will have to be split off into another article, but can the history/happenings at Evo and the bare results exist separately well enough? TheStickMan[✆Talk] 03:16, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I made it. Please see List of Evolution Championship Series champions--Yappakoredesho (talk) 17:03, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's nice that you made it but 1. I wasn't really calling for a split just yet, I just wanted a little discussion on whether such an idea was necessary/would be feasable, and 2. It should probably be renamed "List of Evolution Championship Series results" or "finalists". TheStickMan[✆Talk] 17:09, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry to bother you, but I think your idea is right. It is necessary to make other article for results because there are too many result tables in the current article. If the results for Evo were split off into another article, we should decide following points.
  • Should the size of result tables be unified? I think looking is good if the size of result tables are same.
  • Should results of the side tournaments be added? I don't think it is good idea to do this because there are too many side tournaments. I tried to search all results on the internet for many days, but I couldn't.
  • Is it necessary to put '?' in the vacant cells in the tables? Some players' names are still unknown.
  • Should results of "Battle by the Bay" be added? "Battle by the Bay" is related to current EVO events.
  • Should results of preliminary events of EVO be added?
  • What kind of internal and external links should be listed?

These are just examples. If you have any points to discuss, please mention. --Yappakoredesho (talk) 18:37, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fast forward to 2020

Parse team tags from players?

[edit]

What would you guys think about doing so? With team rosters fluctuating nowadays, in an individual competition, it would make sense to just get rid of them altogether in order to avoid some confusion later. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MissingPersonSRK (talkcontribs) 14:54, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Joe Higashi

[edit]

Hey everyone, Joe Higashi the GG player in EVO 2009 is a French guy, the commentators even say so in the footage him playing in Top 8. [1]

That's odd, it seems like you're right. I'll look into this a little more. TheStickMan[✆Talk] 16:25, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ZeRo's nationality

[edit]

Yes, ZeRo was born and raised in Chile, and most people know him as such. However, ZeRo has officially moved to the United States as of March 2015, and he also wants to be credited as an American as well. PR Balrog was listed as Puerto Rican in 2009, but from 2011 onward, he's listed as an American. 70.108.82.59 (talk) 19:18, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of people forget about this too, I forgot about ZeRo moving to the USA. I found out on the Official Smash Wiki. I'm sorry about your misunderstanding, I think ZeRo should be switched to the American flag. Top 8 tournaments that ZeRo made in Apex should not be given the US flag because he was representing Chile at those times. Therefore, he deserves that American flag. UltraDark:) 2 CHAT 19:41, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
A bit confused on why my edits keep getting reverted when I post a tweet straight from ZeRo. At the very least, I'd like a discussion on why it keeps getting reverted, since the only reply on here is in favor of ZeRo being listed as American. 70.108.82.59 (talk) 01:57, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This tweet from him, at the time of editing, confirms that not only Nicolás achievement from Chile, but also Zero too. It should be listed the Chilean flag. This should end the discussion. DarkGhostHunter (talk) 02:14, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
All right, I can accept that, then. Thanks for confirming. 70.108.82.59 (talk) 02:33, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Page structure

[edit]

I'd like to suggest a change to the EVO page structure, to a more in depth summary of the event, instead of creating a new subsection for each edition with a big results section embedded. Like this

History

Describe EVO's history dividing it by subsections to each big moment and or "era" of the event. (some suggestions)

1996–2003: Tournament beginnings and re-branding
2004–08: Change to consoles, Moment 37 and EVO Circuit
2009–13: Street Fighter IV, Live Stream and record numbers
2014–present: Smash boom and future
Format

The Double Elimination format is the standard, but EVO has used many seeding systems and qualification formats throughout the years. This information can be fleshed out here.

Attendance

Historically attendance numbers for EVO. I know that those numbers are pretty scarce from before 2011, but still, research (interviews with primary sources) can be done to document some of those numbers for the more recent events.

Results

A detailed results list for each year, using many of the current tables PFFP (talk) 00:45, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Split

[edit]

More content needs to be split off, the page is still too enormous.--Prisencolin (talk) 01:42, 27 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I've been working on it! Creating Evo 2015 and Evo 2016 wasn't the easiest work I've ever done :p Thing is, splitting off more years gets difficult from this point on. 2015 is already a significantly shorter article than 2016, and I have no idea yet how much there will be on 2014. I'm sure it should be possible up to at least 2013. Thing is, maybe it would be a good idea to actually get rid of most of these tables and actually write some more prose about the evolution of the event itself... The only reason this article is huge is because it insists on showing the results of each year's Guilty Gear tournament, a game sources don't seem particularly interested in.
But yeah, school is starting again, so I'll have way less spare time, though I am looking forward to seeing what kind of articles we can write about Evo 2013 and Evo 2014. ~Mable (chat) 08:57, 27 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to try to go back at least to Evo 2011. I'm still pleased with the results, so I see no reason to stop splitting them yet. I like watching the event change with every year I go back. In 2016, I write about a game being showed at the Indie Showcase, and in 2013, I write about the Indie Showcase being established. In 2015, there isn't an Injustice tournament; in 2014, journalists noted that after the previous year's disappointment, 2014 would likely be the last year for an Injustice tournament; and in 2013, I write about people being excited for the first Injustice tournament. It's these little things that make this project so fun to me. I'm looking forward to what other stories I come across as I go back in time further. ~Mable (chat) 09:25, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I seem to be running out of sources. Evo 2012 might need even meet GNG as it is now. Well, I'm somewhat alright with its current state, but I don't want to create sub-par articles if I can avoid it. However, I do notice that this article already includes multiple sources on Evo 2011, so it may still be viable. I have no idea. Thoughts, @Prisencolin:?

EVO Japan 2018

[edit]

Sorry for getting the months mixed up between the two similarly named events. I believe it still stands that the EVO Japan section deserves an update (and/or the update template) regarding what occurred there and any other significant coverage of it that was made as it has already transpired.

I now see the main article link that I missed before. Could the phrasing of this section be updated to give a broad overview of the (distinct) event's results or some such? It currently seems phrased as though it's an event still to happen. --Cheers! Elfabet (talk) 12:43, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Splitting up locations to separate pages

[edit]

I'm suggesting this because of the recent announcement that Evo will be expanding to France in 2025 and Singapore in 2026. I'm more so worried of the size of the page moving forward since TheHadou heavily hinted that this will not be the end of Evo's expansion plans. -- Uselesssdvx 02:19, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
