Acquia is a privately-held corporation based in Boston, Massachusetts, that specializes in providing cloud-based digital experience software and services built around the open-source web content management system[web content management system], Drupal [3]. The company’s product portfolio offers broad capabilities including Drupal site hosting, content management, digital asset management (DAM) , content optimization and personalization, digital & web accessibility, marketing automation, and customer data management.

History

Early Years: 2007 - 2011

In 2000, as an undergraduate at the University of Antwerp in Belgium, Dries Buytaert created a community message board that he later released as an open-source project called Drupal. In the years that followed, Drupal became a truly international open-source project with developers across Europe and the US using the platform for high-profile websites such as for 2004 U.S. presidential candidate Howard Dean [4] and MTV.[5] [6]

Realizing that the long-term growth of the Drupal project would depend on a commercial arm focused on helping organizations be successful with the software, Dries co-founded Acquia in 2007 with Jay Batson to provide infrastructure, support, and services to the largest, most demanding Drupal users. Later that year, Acquia secured $7 million in a Series A financing led by North Bridge Venture Partners[7]. A majority of the subsequent year was spent building the company’s first products and, in September 2008, Acquia officially opened for business with the commercial availability of the Acquia Network, which offered subscription-based access to commercial support for all of the modules in Acquia Drupal, a free distribution of Drupal [8].

Rapid Growth: 2012 - 2018

By the end of 2012, Acquia had raised cumulative investments totaling $68.5 million [9], enabling the company to expand its geographic presence into the Asia-Pacific region, grow its partner community to nearly 550, and acquire the content quality assurance technology company Mollom BVBA [10]. That same year, Inc. magazine ranked Acquia first among software companies and eighth overall on its 31st annual Inc. 500|5000 [11]. 

The following year (2013), Acquia was recognized as the fastest growing private technology company in North America on Deloitte’s Fast 500TM [12]. Then, in 2014, the company decided to expand from its focus on content management to the broader market of digital experience management. One of the first steps in this journey was the release of Acquia Lift [13], a personalization platform for Drupal-based sites. This was followed in May 2014 by a $50 million financing round, bringing total investment in the company to $118.6 million [14]. In August 2014, Acquia also secured an undisclosed amount of funding from Amazon[15]– notable as Acquia runs its entire infrastructure on Amazon Web Services. Soon after, Acquia acquired TruCentric and its SaaS solution for real-time customer profiling and user engagement [16].

In 2015, Acquia closed a $55 million financing round to help the company expand sales and marketing and drive new product development [17]. In the subsequent years, Acquia continued its geographic expansion with new offices in Germany, India, and Japan [18][19]; launched new products and partnerships while enhancing existing capabilities within the company’s portfolio [20][21][22]. At the end of 2018, the company reported that it had surpassed $200 million in annualized revenue[23].

Digital Experience Platform evolution: 2019 - present

In May 2019, Acquia acquired Mautic [24], the open source marketing automation platform, which later became Acquia Campaign Studio. In September 2019, Acquia acquired Cohesion [25], the creator of the first enterprise-grade, low-code Drupal website builder, which became the foundation of Acquia Site Studio.

Following these two acquisitions, Vista Equity Partners bought a controlling stake in Acquia, valuing the company at $1 billion. [26] The investment enabled Acquia to accelerate its push in the Digital Experience Platform (DXP) market, starting with the acquisition of AgilOne [27] and its customer data platform (CDP), which was later renamed Acquia CDP.

In September 2021, Acquia acquired Widen Enterprises,[28] an integrated [digital asset management](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_asset_management) (DAM) and product information management (PIM) platform that was later rebranded as Acquia DAM. Most recently, Acquia acquired Monsido, a digital accessibility and web optimization platform, in November 2023 from CivicPlus [29]. Monsido has since been renamed Acquia Optimize and forms a key component of Acquia’s Digital Experience Optimization solution.

Operations

Acquia operates across a wide range of markets, including financial services, healthcare and life sciences, government, manufacturing, travel and hospitality, and the non-profit sectors [30]. Notable customers include Crayola, Autodesk, United Nations, Nestlé, ABInBev, Bayer, Unicef, Johnson & Johnson [31] [32].

Aligned to the company’s open-source roots and its founding values, Acquia has implemented environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices and policies that are specific to its business and industry. Among these programs, Acquia has joined the Vista Climate Pledge [33] and is committed to reducing the company’s Scope 1, 2, and partial Scope 3 GHG emissions footprint by 50% by 2030, from a 2020 base year.

Acquia is accomplishing these goals in a number of different ways, but always by using accredited partners with certified offset, reclamation, or removal projects, such as Flash Forest and Tree Nation [34] to provide sustainable reforestation. 

In addition, Acquia supports a diverse, global team and has been recognized as a Great Place to Work in the United States, UK, and India.

Acquia and Drupal

Acquia is recognized for its role in sponsoring the development of Drupal, and is the number one organizational contributor to the Drupal project [35]. In addition, Acquia employs the Drupal Acceleration Team [36], which helps provide resources and people to help drive the Drupal project forward.  facilitating Drupal adoption by enterprises worldwide and sponsoring its development. 

In September of 2023, Acquia contributed an open source version of the Acquia Migrate Accelerate module, enabling any Drupal site owner to use the tool to migrate from Drupal 7 to Drupal 8/9/10 [37].

At Drupalcon Portland in 2024, Dries Buytaert announced Drupal Starshot, a new default installation of Drupal CMS that will enable site builders and content creators to easily build their entire website and compose content using only their browser and without relying on developers. Acquia is contributing a number of resources to help drive the initiative, including 2 team members who serve on the Starshot leadership team in addition to Dries’ position as the overall Project Lead [38].

Acquia and Mautic

Following its acquisition of Mautic, Acquia donated the Mautic brand and trademark to the community in April of 2023, as well as made a seed funding commitment to help support Ruth Cheesley in her commitment to grow the Mautic community [39][40].
