Simón Bolívar (1783–1830) was the Venezuelan leader of independence movements in several South American countries, and the namesake of the country Bolivia. The surname Bolívar is of Basque origin, deriving from the village of Bolibar in Spanish Biscay. The name comes from the Basque bolu ("windmill") and ibar ("valley").[1]
