To Do List

edit

Number 2 on the list as it currently stands (one article per each of the 26 radio episodes and 6 TV episodes) is probably NOT a good idea. Unlike longer-running SF series (Star Trek, Doctor Who, etc.), none of the episodes had specific titles (beyond Fit the First to Fit the Twenty-sixth for the radio series or Episode One to Episode Six for the TV series). Granted, the summaries for the action in the six TV episodes still hasn't been finished as I write this, but the four pages (radio series summary, radio series 1 & 2, radio series 3-5 and TV series) were long ago decided by consensus, and still make a logical format. I just can't see where 32 short articles would do any better than four long, detailed ones. --JohnDBuell 15:26, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Key articles for Wikipedia 1.0

edit

Hello! We at the Work via WikiProjects team for Wikipedia 1.0 would like you to identify the "key articles" from your project that should be included in offline releases of Wikipedia based on their importance, regardless of quality. We will use that information to assess which articles should be nominated for Version 1.0 (not yet open) and later versions. Hopefully it will also help you identify which articles are the most important for the project to work on. As well, please add to your Arts WikiProject article table any articles of high quality. If you are interested in developing a worklist such as this one for your WikiProject, or having a bot generate a worklist automatically for you, please contact us. Please feel free to post your suggestions right here. Thanks! Walkerma 01:09, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Active or not?

edit

Sorry folks, but I haven't seen much movement here. The main project page has changed little, and I haven't really seen any contributions to any related pages. I've been tempted to put {{historical}} on the main page.... --JohnDBuell 02:28, 20 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

It would be nice if this were to remain active...but I see little direction for the project...I joined in the hopes of being able to contribute more...but there seems to be little to no leading body left here... --KPWM_Spotter 03:00, 20 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I STILL haven't been able to make the time to write proper summaries for the TV episodes on The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (TV series) page. If anyone has the tapes, or even better the DVDs (as they provide more material), that would be one long-standing thing off of my personal to-do list. --JohnDBuell 03:05, 20 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I have the DVDs actually...eBay'ed them last year... I might start up on those edits tomorrow, if I've got the time. --KPWM_Spotter 03:27, 20 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I just did some major rewrites on the actual project page, so maybe we can get some people interested and move forward! --JohnDBuell 20:14, 21 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

A message from the founder

edit

I'm currently more occupied with WikiProject Dad's Army at moment. So, therefore I have decided to give control of the project to JohnDBuell as he has done a lot for this project so far, and I hope will continue to help out this project in the future. However, i'm not quitting the role as project founder and controller, if you like I am doing what Bill Gates did recently. Thankyou --Mollsmolyneux 18:39, 22 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. I accept, and hope everyone can contribute! --JohnDBuell 18:54, 22 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fansites

edit

In 2005, an article about the Douglas Adams Continuum website was created, and then deleted under grounds of non-notability and violations of WP:NOT. The process was, naturally, the ire of the forum members for a while. This article was recently re-created, and I put it up for Proposed Deletion. However, after following the conversation on their forum (reading only, not participating), I felt it best to move information about fansites and their activity into The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as international phenomenon article, as a compromise. --JohnDBuell 18:51, 7 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cast lists

edit

For some time, I have been working on an attempt to make one single cast list for all versions of The Hitchhiker's Guide. As I recently (finally) acquired a pair of the LPs, I've been able to nearly completely fill out this list. I'd like to get it out of my user pages and into a permanent article, such as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy cast lists or some such. The list currently is at User:JohnDBuell/Complete H2G2 Cast Lists if anyone would like to look it over. Thanks! --JohnDBuell 04:25, 18 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Aside from improving the article, I was also wondering if one could make a userbox?

As there was this one:

I would guess that the more you promote a user box, the more it will wind up being adopted and used. --JohnDBuell 12:26, 15 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Has the website's maintainer stated that it's available under the GNU FDL? I don't see that on the website. If it is, either get the website to say so, or get a letter to the Wikimedia Foundation. You should also post on the image's page (or the Images and media for deletion page) that you're following it up with the image's/website's creator, seeking proper licensing. --JohnDBuell 19:45, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merger

edit

I Support the proposed merger with Wikipedia:WikiProject Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, possibly with that becoming the name of the project. The fact that this project, despite it's better setup, has a slightly more ambiguous name could be seen as problematic. I chose to start this thread again, with all its related problems, because I've just had an unhappy love affair, so I don't see why anyone else should have a good time. Message ends. Changes to Marvin article

edit

There are changes being proposed to the article on Marvin the Paranoid Android; see Talk:#Merge_in_of_songs and also Talk:#More_external_links. The people wanting to do this don't seem to be fans of HH or particularly knowledgeable. Thought people here might want to contribute to the discussions. HairyWombat 22:57, 21 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

edit

I would like to call the attention of members of this project to the recently revised guideline at WP:FICT, which now states that all sub-articles on fictional subjects must independently meet a new (stricter) notability ruling than what was in place prior to the new guideline. If enforced, the new guideline would likely result in the deletion and/or merging of hundreds of articles on fictional subjects, such as fictional characters, television episodes, fictional locations, etc. There is active discussion / disagreement related to this issue at Wikipedia talk:Notability (fiction), and in the interests of ensuring the topic is fully discussed by interested editors, I would invite members of this project to participate in that discussion (whether you agree with the new guideline or not). Project title

edit

Hello. The project plans for the demolition of Wikipedia:WikiProject Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy are currently on display at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:WikiProject Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It has been proposed that your project might be moved to that name, as the fully spelled out name is perhaps a bit more easily understood. Thank you for taking an interest in local affairs. Salmon of Doubt

edit

In the main article on Douglas Adams it states that The Salmon of Doubt is the third book in the Dirk Gently series. Yet in the article on Mostly Harmless it states that it's the sixth book in the Hitchhikers series. Which is it?

Parmadil 13:20, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Both. Dirk Gently and Ford Prefect both appear in the book, making it effectively a part of both series. John Carter 13:27, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

The SEP Field cloaking device/invisibility machine

edit

While briefly mentioned a couple of times in one book, second or third - can't remember which, this is an example of Douglas' genius in extracting comedy from a very British/human trait; the "inability" to see something once it is determined to be "Somebody Elses Problem" resulting in anything utilising an SEP field renders the object invisible (The Heart of Gold parked upon the field of play at Lords, for example). If this project is still running, a small stub with the book and page numbers - I don't recall it in any radio play - would be nice. It is a better joke than the Point-of-view gun, in my opinion. LessHeard vanU (talk) 21:38, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

If we can establish notability, I'll try to do so. Otherwise, I might have to add the relevant content to some other article, maybe creating a redirect. John Carter (talk) 21:39, 5 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Vogon

edit

this is a bit odd. Vogon redirects to Races and species in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz redirects to Minor characters from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This might seem OK but it leaves Vogon poetry and Vogon Constructor Fleet as free-standing articles. I think there's enough here to make a decent article (with a rewrite of VCF), especially as they (Jeltz in particular) are the major plot driver in the Quintessential Phase. What say you? WikiProject Media franchises

edit

Dear WikiProject Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy participants...WikiProject Media franchises needs some help from other projects which are similar. Media franchises' scope deals primarily with the coordination of articles within the hundreds if not thousands of media franchises which exist. Sometimes a franchise might just need color coordination of the various templates used; it could mean creating an article for the franchise as a jump off point for the children of it; or the creation of a new templating system for media franchise articles. The project primarily focuses on multimedia franchises. It would be great if some of this project's participants would come over and help the project get back on solid footing. Also, if you know of similar projects which have not received this, let Lady Aleena (talk · contribs) know. Please come and take a look at the project and see if you wish to lend a hand. You can sign up here if you wish. Thank you. LA @ 21:35, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Random Dent

edit

Random Dent is currently a redirect to the list of minor characters. However, since Slartibartfast has his own article, I thought Random might deserve her own article, as she is very important in the 5th book and a main character in 5th. Harry Blue5 (talk) 20:02, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

To be notable, Random would have to be mentioned in secondary sources. (Unfortunately, the novel Mostly Harmless is a primary source.) Sorry to be harsh, but I would not want you to contribute a lot of work only to see deletionists pass by and destroy it. HairyWombat 03:21, 26 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Harry, do you mean "she is very important in the 5th book and a main character in 6th."? ISD (talk) 19:34, 26 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Unfortunately, the novel And Another Thing... is also a primary source. To see what you are up against, please plough through the discussion here. At the moment, Random is part of a list article. My unhappy prediction is that she will not survive even in this improverished state. HairyWombat 19:58, 26 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (radio series)

edit

I don't know if this project is still active, but it strikes me that it would be great for the current FA on the radio series to be today's featured article on the 11th May (10 years since Adams' death). However, a quick look over suggests that it's not quite up to scratch as FAs go anymore. I don't want to take it to review, but it would be great if we could collaborate in making it a bit better in time. Does anybody have any of his biographies? Bob talk 22:24, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Comment about Zaphod Beeblebrox's hands/Arms

edit

There is a note in the Zaphod page that Zaphod has 3 arms but in episode 8 of the radio series there is an ad lib, where Zaphod says put her There, and there , and there and there. The wiki entry says this implies he has four arms. It doesn't. It shows evidence that he has four hands. It is perfectly possible, if you can grow three arms, to grow four hands and have the fourth hand located on one of the other arms , or in some other location all together. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.27.109.242 (talk) 18:09, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

The title

edit

What is the justification for the contracted version of the title that seems to have been applied to all Guide-related Wikipedia pages? The original radio series was billed as "Hitch-Hiker's" in the Radio Times, which is the form also used for the script book; for the novels Pan seems to have used "Hitch-Hiker's" on covers, and "Hitch Hiker's" interally; the vinyl LPs use "Hitch-Hiker's"; the TV series renders it as "Hitchhikers" on-screen, but the "Hitch Hikers" in the Radio Times; and finally we have "The Illustrated Hitch Hiker's Guide..." In short, only a single manifestation uses the contracted "Hitchhikers" but doesn't apply any possessive to it, while most other versions use the hyphenated "Hitch-Hiker's". So why have we ended up with the extreme minority form being used throughout Wikipedia? Nick Cooper (talk) 18:15, 9 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

edit

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject X is live!

edit

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

edit

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

edit

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   10:58, 31 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory!
