Suspected sockpuppets

edit

I suspect that the editor in question created a sockpuppet account in July in an attempt to create a WP:POVFORK article of Genetic studies on Bulgarians. The account also promoted the same narrative about the origin of the Bulgarians and Bulgars as MiltenR (see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). StephenMacky1 (talk) 13:10, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is a good assumption, I think. Jingiby (talk) 13:25, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • These two accounts are technically   Unrelated. I can't rule out the possibility that MiltenR created a new account and performed some edits while on holiday in another country, but the evidence doesn't seem strong enough to assume that somethinng like that is going on here (and only an explanation along those lines would account for the disparities I see in the logs). Strong indication that the account is a sockpuppet of MiltenR. The editor uses identical edit summaries and promotes their POV. (1 and 2) StephenMacky1 (talk) 22:58, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Analizator Libertarianski is pretty much   Confirmed. Considering the history of blocks on the master account and the fact that they are currently blocked for 6 months, I have upgraded their block to indefinite. Closing. Thanks, Spicy (talk) 01:19, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

User:WindWalkerOfficial was created about five days ago, on 23 April 2024. Despite the short period of time that has elapsed, and their few edits (77 as of this report's publication), it is already quite clear that they have similar interests (see EIA) and views to those of indefinitely blocked User:MiltenR. For example, in the Phrygians page, which I actively monitor, they both tried to give undue weight to the same primary source; compare this addition by User:MiltenR, to this addition by User:WindWalkerOfficial, where they both refer to Strabo's description of the Phrygians as a Thracian tribe.

User:Mitko28 is also a new user, created on 4 April 2024; at the beginning of this month. Just like the indefinitely blocked User:MiltenR (diff) and the co-reported User:WindWalkerOfficial (diff), User:Mitko28 (diff) has also commented in the page Talk:Bulgars about the genetics of Proto-Bulgarians and present-day Bulgarians; essentially trying to disassociate them from any Turkic background. User:Euiauaua was created on 28 April 2024, which is the same day that the last sockpuppets of User:MiltenR were blocked; see the relevant SPI case, which was filed about six and a half hours prior of this new user's creation. Their only edit is in the page Talk:Bulgars, where sockmaster User:MiltenR, and their recently reported sockpuppets User:WindWalkerOfficial and User:Mitko28, have all commented in (EIA). The post of User:Euiauaua (diff) was is in line with User:MiltenR's preceding post (diff).

I am just a little surprised that the last use of CU didn't pick this new user up, considering that it appears to have been used seven hours after their creation. Maybe the checkuser didn't look for other accounts, or the sockmaster is using proxies, or this is a case of meatpuppetry; none of these possibilities would surprise me, judging by the IP activity in the aforementioned page. The user (known as TereusOfThrace until September 1st) was created on August 24; just in a few days they have 202 edits (321 as of September 10th), they show suspicious familiarity with wikipedia, and identical interests as MiltenR and all his socks.

1) The very first day of the account's creation the user edited the article of the Thracians and continued to make large-scale additions (tens of thousands of bytes) during the following days showcasing unusual familiarity with editing and sourcing for an account that is just a couple of days old (see their early activity). MiltenR's latest sock WindWalkerOfficial displayed the exact same behaviour when they first joined: (see here). Just in a few days, Tereus has 27 edits in this article already.

2) Except for the Thracians, which is the main interest, WindWalkerOfficial also immediately edited the article of the Phrygians (1), TereusOfThrace edited the article of the Phrygian cap (2) the second day, both adding content related to the Thracians.

3.1) WindWalkerOfficial created the Template:Thrace series, which TereusOfThrace edited the 2nd day of their creation (see edit history) Both accounts have the largest contribution to that template.

3.2) Just like WindWalker created the template when they first joined, Tereus created a huge table about "Ancient Peoples Equated to Thracians By Classical Authors" (see User:TereusOfThrace/sandbox and its history) and interactive maps which they added to the article ( 82,780 bytes!)

4) MiltenR was interested in Bulgarian history, often highlighting the connection of Bulgarians and Thracians (1), Tereus also edited the article History of Bulgaria ("Thracians Appear Earlier"), using the source: Modi et all (2019); based on that source WindWalker had expanded the lead of the Thracians in April (this edit, it's <ref name=":4">).

5) An old sock with no activity was User:ErionTracology (Thracology) alluding to the same subject, just like this account's original name "OfThrace". Piccco (talk) 11:09, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know whether there's enough data from the previous sock to draw comparisons, but I believe the user's experience in creating overly ambitious projects (like those tables in their sandbox) as well as their activity in Thracian-related topics (and particularly in relation to Bulgaria) is beyond telling. The area does not attract the amount of interest and pov pushing by other users, and when it does it is a confirmed MilterR sock. Piccco (talk) 11:24, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
