Discussed

edit

Since we accidentally landed up at two different tables in hidden corners of Truth we had two tables discussing different topics. To make up for this we are pushing Cape Town 10 two months forward and having it on the 4th October 2015. Same time, same place.

Discott, Woutergb, and Raymond

edit
  • Talked about grant making, Wikimedia Foundation, WikiHow, and connections with the international Wiki-movement.
  • Also talked about possibilities of working with local museums, especially Iziko Museums and the needs for greater outreach there. Discussed the possibility of a Wikipedian in residence.
  • Discussed Kiwix and offline Wikipedia.
  • Talked about Germany and Berlin.
  • Talked about PR companies writing Wikipedia pages for profit as a service for companies.
  • Also discussed development economics (non-Wiki related discussion).
  • Talked about the Wikidata Game.

Did not talk too much about statistics but it would have been a good discussion as Raymond is a statistician and Discott run the South African Wikipedia community survey. Also sounds like our conversations, although happening at different tables and completely independently of each other, were very similar.

Greenman and Wizzy

edit

Since it was just the two of us, the cappuccino-and-rooibos-fuelled discussions lurched from renewable energy use in Germany, Mubi, Kenyan politicians and their professional Wikipedia whitewashers, Ken Wilber's quadrants, sangomas and placebos.

Also the important role of skepticism and a basic understanding of statistics in dealing with today's connected world.

2015 Table Mountain fire

edit

Hi everyone, sorry to be missing this one... I'll be in Kimberley ringing Sociable Weavers :p

However, I'd like to take the opportunity to raise a topic I'd otherwise have mentioned at the meeting: there's still no article for the 2015 Table Mountain fires, which would be excellent article material - interesting progression and causes, interesting aftermath going on right now (post-fire ecological studies), and extensive coverage. I suppose that would start with finding a few good photos that could be put up on Commons - so maybe local Wikipedians have something to offer there? (I myself only have horrendous cell phone footage) That article would definitely benefit from some cooperation among Cape Town editors.-- Elmidae (talk) 10:56, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Elmidae, thanks for reminding us of this. Creating an article for the 2015 Table Mountain Fire has been on my to-do list for a long time now and the longer we wait the harder it becomes to find great sources for it as newspaper articles have a way of becoming really hard to find after a while on the internet. Also now we have some fantastic photographs and even video of the aftermath of the fires thanks to the "Wiki From Above" competition we hosted a few months ago.--Discott (talk) 10:42, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
