Unencyclopedic; I fail to see how this is a useful illustration of the topic. We would have Venn diagrams of music and history to illustrate music history, or of Americans and Jews to illustrate American Jews. King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 00:17, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Keep If the editors at Computer-based mathematics education think the article would be improved without this diagram, I am sure they would be able to deal with the matter without the assistance of FFD. The article is actively edited, the diagram has been there for years, and it seems to not have been controversial or problematic. Math-Bridge is being merged in at present so this might, but more likely would not, affect the situation. I presume these editors regard the diagram as encyclopedic and I do too. The fact that similar diagrams might exist, when they actually do not, is not a deletion criterion.Thincat (talk) 17:09, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, the fact that Math-Bridge is being merged in is what caused me to look at this article, as I closed the AfD, but that's all irrelevant. I just want to know: how does it aid the reader's understanding of the topic? We have a bar set for non-free images (WP:NFCC#8), and a much lower bar for free images like this, but I just don't think it meets even this lower bar. As for the deal with my WP:OTHERSTUFF argument, these kinds of arguments are usually invalid because often people are comparing apples to oranges. But if two things are essentially equivalent, then it doesn't make sense for one thing to be kept while the other is deleted. At this point, could you tell me which of the following you believe? 1) This Venn diagram is useful, but most others are not. My question is then, how is this different? 2) This and similar Venn diagrams are useful. In this case my question is, how in particular are they useful? Well, thank you for your answer but I don't think I agree with any of it at all. Is any of it based on deletion policy (or even guidelines)? The readers' understanding bar for non-free images is so that we only impinge on copyright when sufficiently well justified. For free images there is no such consideration at all — it is not that the bar is lower: for deletion the "understanding" bar is not there at all. If you feel the diagram does not improve the readers' understanding much at Computer-based mathematics education, please edit the article accordingly. Discuss your edit if you think appropriate or if you are reverted. That is how Wikipedia works. At FFD you are in the wrong department for article improvement. I understand you think you are comparing apples with apples but that is simply your opinion. The two examples you give would have two circles and four regions but this one has three and eight. Is there any precedent, policy or guideline that a Venn diagram of Americans and Jews should be or would be deleted? Of your two proposed options, (2) applies because the eye is drawn to the interactions between the disciplines. I see you think that Venn diagrams with text inside their circles are normally useful (so, actually, we do have one point of agreement!) but in this case that the text is just outside the circles does not make it any less useful. First of all, I never said we should nominate music history for deletion. And yes, for free images there is such a consideration, as we routinely delete unencyclopedic free images. See Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2011 June 1. TonyTheTiger could have easily inserted the images of his poker winnings into the poker article and claimed that people could just "edit the article accordingly" to incorporate the images under your reasoning. Your issue with two vs. three circles - I would have come up with a three-circle Venn diagram, but wasn't feeling creative at the time, but they're just "you get the idea" kind of examples in the first place. Since you believe in Venn diagrams that have only labels outside the circles which pretty much duplicate the title of the article, then how would you feel if every article about an interaction of two or three things had a Venn diagram that was blank except for the labels? Frankly, I would consider that to be quite silly, and that is why there is no precedent, policy, or guideline covering it: because nobody has seriously considered the prolific use of Venn diagrams, especially not blank ones. To me, the only place where a Venn diagram is much better than just plain text (or maybe a table) is when discussing set theory, because the shading shows what is and isn't included. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 21:47, 4 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Weak keep. I say "weak" because I agree that it's a rather low-quality and lightweight image. But that's not a sufficient reason to delete. As far as I can see, the file is properly licensed as a free file. Comment - Can you make one? Do you know of anyone who can? And would doing so violate other copyright laws? BTW, I'd also like to see a decent replacement for that Maryland and Delaware Railroad locomotive you deleted recently. Obviously someone can make a diagram like that, because someone made the original one. Thus it is absolutely possible to make a free one. Otherwise, you are adding stipulations beyond what the policy states. An image fails WP:NFCC#1 if a free image exists or it is possible to create one. It does not require that a free image be the same quality or physical condition as a non-free one. It just states that it has to be possible. SchuminWeb (Talk) 02:22, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The reason we have NFCC #1 is not just to show a preference of free content to non-free content. By prohibiting replaceable non-free content, we are forcing users to create free images themselves that they would not have created otherwise. To see how images of similar quality could reasonably be created, check out Wikipedia:Featured pictures/Diagrams, drawings, and maps/Diagrams. Image does not seem to be an "official" poster for the event, but rather just a user-created image that was posted online at a personal blog or similar site. A link to the image was found, but a source pointing to the site where the image was used has not been found, so it is not entirely clear if this image satisfies WP:NFC#4 (assuming personal blogs or similar sites do not qualify as "publications"). The rationale's reasons for satisfying WP:NFC include "Illustration" (for its "Purpose of use") and "confirms to readers they have reached the correct article", which do not satisfy NFC. If I could digress from the "officiality" argument for a second - since you don't accept it - may I point you to this link from FORBES magazine which is cited underneath the image in the info box to the right of the article. It says verbatim: "AdBusters placed their “Occupy Wall Street” ads on line on Wednesday. It features a ballerina balancing on the famous Wall Street bull." Keep - This is the first image that appeared at the beginning of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Its image is ubiquitous; and in the flux of the media, somewhat synonymous with the movement. But we as conscientious editors don't find that an acceptable reason for its inclusion here. We editors are not justifying it placement in the infobox, because that's what the media/advertisements put out. But think about this: how can we possibly justify its removal? If we replace it instead with an officially updated poster sanctioned by OWS, then we are acting like an advertisement mouthpiece for the movement. That's not Wikipedia's job to do that kind of advertising/updating.

In fact, we may have no other option but to keep this first poster, because it is the first one that inaugurated the event. That's why it's in the infobox: that's the justification. That can reasonably be defended over time. It would, in fact, be historically accurate to make that claim, and make it stick. It's part of the record. We keep it as part of historical documentation. In the long run, by keeping it, we demonstrate neutrality. That's the way we can easily argue for its historical accuracy, perspective, NPOV, credibility, etc. Why this image?, people will ask. It's there because it was the first image/poster most people saw. What other option is there? How can we put a picture of a crowd of demonstrators in the infobox? Which one do we choose? Now eventually there might be some kind of iconic image that comes out of the movement, just like the Tank Man, the unknown rebel who stared down the tank during Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, came out of that protest movement and gained iconic status. But that picture isn't even in the article. Why? I'm not sure. Probably because it is "biased"?! Unlike the poster under discussion, the Tank Man photograph has clear copyright status, was taken by an identified media photographer, and was never intended as a movement's originating poster. Original copyright of the Tank Man photograph has been further reinforced by later print reproductions. As such, fair use applies to the Tank Man photograph when used for the Tank Man article only. Delete or Replace - Images used for protests (see Arab Spring for a collage of recent protests) show the crowd of protesters occupying an area. No text. No Twitter hashtags. No unofficial culture-jamming poster created by AdBusters. I have been following the protest in broadcast and print media this past week, and the Wikipedia infobox is the first time I came across this image, so it does not appear to be as ubiquitous as Christian Roess claims. It is certainly a creative image, but that is not one of the criteria for inclusion in a Wikipedia article much less the infobox for an historical event. After all, there's no shortage of posters created for this event. Delete the rationale for it not being replaceable was changed from the remoteness of the location to the fact that the subject is deceased. However, the body is, as far as I know, still there and still regularly seen by climbers.
