Nominator's rationale: WP:ARBITRARYCAT, not populated by what the catname says, and apparently cannot be populated at the moment. Parent Category:Law of Ukraine suffices for now. NLeeuw (talk) 18:27, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 19:09, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Pretty much the same scope, and a bit of an WP:ARBITRARYCAT. When I found this cat a few minutes ago, it only had Ukrainization (obviously) and Servant of the People, meaning the political party of Zelensky. If we are going to categorise parties by policies or societal phenomena, I think we'll get a lot of unnecessary overcategorisation, so I propose to purge Servant of the People. The other two items (about Ukrainization in 1920s and 1930s Soviet Ukraine) I just added myself, but then I found out that Language policy in Ukraine has a dedicated Category:Language policy in Ukraine, so we might as well Upmerge for now the 3 remaining items. NLeeuw (talk) 16:16, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:35, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Would an article like De-Tatarization of Crimea (or Renaming of Crimean toponyms) fit in the Category:Language policy in Ukraine? Technically, Crimea is currently located in internationally-recognised territory of Ukraine, but the scope of the article is about the Soviet and Russian efforts to remove traces of the indigenous Crimean Tatar presence from the peninsula. It's technically not about the language policy of the government of Ukraine in Crimea. On the other hand, the Category:Language policy in Russia suggests that Crimea is (legally incorrect), was (historically correct) or has always been (legally and historically incorrect) located "in Russia". So I'm not sure whether either category is applicable in this case; we could argue for both, neither, only "Ukraine" or only "Russia". Perhaps pragmatically, we could keep things as they are now. Option B
Nominator's rationale for the original option B: merge/rename, this small tree of three siblings duplicates/overlaps with the larger tree of Category:Years of the 19th century in Saxony. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:31, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: soft delete. Based on minimal participation, this uncontroversial nomination is treated as an expired PROD (a.k.a. "soft deletion"). Editors can request the category's undeletion. (non-admin closure) Queen of Hearts (talk) 04:11, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This is just a programming block for content licensed by Toonami, not content that they produced, so not WP:DEFINING for this category. WP:NOTTVGUIDE --woodensuperman 11:21, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ancient history of Fooland

The result of the discussion was: keep. (non-admin closure) ToadetteEdit (talk) 18:08, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Follow-up to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 June 11#Middle Ages by country, which resulted in Rename all to Medieval history of Fooland with redirects. 17 other child categories in Category:Ancient history by country are already named Ancient history of Fooland. NLeeuw (talk) 10:13, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Qwerfjkl Could I perhaps ask you to help me how to mass-tag the nominees? I'm afraid I don't yet understand how the script User:Qwerfjkl/scripts/massXFD works... NLeeuw (talk) 10:18, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much!   NLeeuw (talk) 15:33, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Even with all these (probable) exceptions, this move is still better than doing the opposite and moving everything to "Ancient [Fooland]", which would result in such anachronisms as "Ancient Pakistan", "Ancient Turkey" and so on. Ham II (talk) 08:26, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
On the other hand, participants do not appear to agree on Category:Ancient China (StarTrekker wants it Deleted, Ham II wants to Keep it, and the rest has not yet expressed an explicit opinion on Ancient China, with Cplakidas, Marcocapelle and Hmains indirectly favouring Rename), and Category:Ancient India (Hmains and Ham II want to Keep it, StarTrekker apparently wants to Delete it, with Cplakidas and Marcocapelle indirectly favouring Rename). Although StarTrekker has a valid point about Western/Euro-centric historiography, nobody else thinks these categories should be deleted. Ham II has pointed out that there are main articles for Outline of ancient China and Outline of ancient India, which is an indirect WP:C2D argument which I could agree with, keeping in mind that these article titles could be viewed as Eurocentric. Ham II also (indirectly) makes a good point that what Western historiography calls "Ancient history" conventionally spans from 3000 BCE to 500 CE, but that Ancient Hawaii covers a period going right up to 1810. But splitting off an article titled Medieval Hawaii would definitely seem Eurocentric, as the Middle Ages are European historiographical concept. Similarly, Category:Ancient Cambodia‎‎ does have a main article, Early history of Cambodia, which covers a period until 1431 (fall of the Khmer Empire), although the scope of "early history" is never explicitly defined or justified in the article. (Pragmatically speaking, the articles Early history of Cambodia and Ancient Hawaii could be put both in Category:Ancient history by country and Category:Middle Ages by country as far as historical scope is concerned, though this once again poses a Eurocentrism issue). Nevertheless, for lack of a substantive counterargument, I think WP:C2C prevails in these two cases, as well as Ancient Syria; Libya might fall under WP:C2D.
To summarise: there seems to be consensus on exempting Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece from the Rename; Ancient China, Ancient India and perhaps Ancient Libya seem to require a bit more discussion, while there is a broad consensus to Rename all other categories as nominated. NLeeuw (talk) 12:39, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Rather as usual, I think you are jumping the gun here, and mistaking lack of interest for agreement! Johnbod (talk) 13:47, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Are you implying that Category:Ancient Hawaii could be split into Category:Ancient history of Hawaii and Category:Medieval history of Hawaii, with the article Ancient Hawaii being in both? There would have to be at least Category:Early modern history of Hawaii as well. Let's keep it at Category:Ancient Hawaii, per WP:C2D.
This seems like an opportune moment to ping the relevant WikiProjects for the uncertain cases. Ham II (talk) 13:16, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, that's not what I meant. I meant that the article Ancient Hawaii could technically be added to Category:Middle Ages by country, but that this would be rather Eurocentric, and probably not a good idea (per StarTrekker). That's all. NLeeuw (talk) 16:28, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose – I missed the bus, but for what it's worth I would've opposed the medieval move also: this form feels distinctly more teleological to me, I think due to specifically using the word "history". Not sure what else to do about that, but I distinctly prefer the briefer form as plainer. Remsense ‥  13:32, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose renaming of Greece, Egypt and India. No strong opinions regarding others. PadFoot (talk)
  • Oppose, all for now Many of these include large amounts of prehistory and/or protohistory rather than history. "Ancient" is an unsatisfactory term; many editors think it runs up to say 1600 or even later, & end dates are rarely completely agreed for a particular culture. Some of these categories have rather wierd contents - the Irish one (perhaps a country where "ancient" can stretch especially late) has several articles covering mostly medieval if not Early Modern periods, and is completely separated from the archaeological tree that is actually our main source of knowledge about truly "ancient" Ireland. I think it would be better if time was spent cleaning up this tree, category by category, rather than trying to impose a grand uniform scheme that doesn't work at all well with the categories as they are. Johnbod (talk) 13:47, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Many of these articles should likely vary in categorization depending on context and sources a lot more than they do. While I think antiquity is a viable epoch both within and without Europe for many applications, it still isn't a catch-all. Remsense ‥  13:51, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose as adding unnecessary specificity ("history of") that may not be reflected in member articles, for example those dealing with archaeology, prehistory, etc. Folly Mox (talk) 14:20, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Paul Aaron lead to a different person until I've turned it into a dab page. Gonnym (talk) 19:43, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How does that false redirect, created in July, affect this category? The name is not ambiguous right now. — INS Pirat (talk) 19:51, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The name is obviously ambiguous seeing as how the link was leading to a different person. Categories about a person always follow the article title of that person (WP:C2D), and since this does not have an article, it should follow a title which would fit an article if created. In cases like this it does not matter if this is the only director (again, see C2D). Gonnym (talk) 09:04, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say that it's the only director. There is no other Paul Aaron in Wikipedia right now. That redirect was just incorrect. — INS Pirat (talk) 20:45, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If we were to create a stub article for the director, would that not be situated at Paul Aaron? If so, should probably leave it where it is. --woodensuperman 10:02, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
