Wikipedia:Bay Area WikiSalon July 2018
Bay Area WikiSalon series | ||
---|---|---|
Periodically, on a last Wednesday evening of the month, wiki and open-source enthusiasts meet up to mingle, munch, collaborate or learn about new projects and ideas. At each WikiSalon we plan a brief formal presentation; some will help orient people new to the wiki/open-source world, with others geared to more experienced people. Many presentations will have broad appeal to non-wiki/non-open-source folks. We hope you will join us! Note: We are extremely inclusive – broadly construed – plus we adhere to the friendly place policies of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Mark your calendars! The July 2018 Bay Area WikiSalon will take place on Wednesday the 25th (1800 hours / 6:00 p.m.) at the Wikimedia Foundation's Headquarters. The focus topic will be reliable sources.
Agenda
edit(note: you are very welcome to silently edit on your own during any announcements, talks, or the presentation, and loudly edit before or after them!)
(aftercount: 39 RSVP, 26 attendees at peak)
- Doors open: 6:00 p.m.
- Meet, greet, mingle and munch: 6:00–6:20 p.m. (okay to munch and edit throughout the event!) - (we ended up having a robust assortment of light refreshments and beverages, plus we had pizza, although we ran short on vegetarian and vegan)
- General announcements: 6:20–6:25 p.m.
- Announcements from the floor: 6:25–6:30 p.m.
- 3-minute lightning talks: 6:30–6:36 p.m. (please advise the facilitators if you wish to do one)
- Brief presentation – Reliable sources: 6:36–6:51/7:06 p.m. (including Q&A)
- Wayne gave an introduction on reliable sources. There was an opportunity to ask brief questions at the conclusion of this presentation.
- Niki gave a short presentation showing us how to post a citation from a reliable source. There was an opportunity to ask brief questions at the conclusion of this presentation, and discussion throughout.
- There were a few lightening talks from the audience:
- Notability standards for political candidates
- A request for help with a small language Wiktionary
- A short intro to Wiktionary from an experienced English Wiktionary contributor
- After that, we will have time to edit Wikipedia/Wikimedia together or by ourselves. If you want some help with issues you are facing, this is an excellent opportunity to get some help from other editors! Otherwise, it is also a nice opportunity to meet some fellow Wikimedians.
- Break-out into small groups: 6:51/7:06 p.m. to close
- More mingle and munch: 6:51/7:06 p.m. to close
- Adjourn: 8:30/9:00 p.m.
- Cleanup: We can always use help with recycling/composting/trashing the leftovers and putting up the dirty dishes/stools/etc.
At each WikiSalon we typically have beverages and light hors d'oeuvres – or sometimes pizza(!), provided by a Rapid Grant from the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF). You are also welcome to bring your own food or additional adult beverages. Free Wi-Fi is available. Be sure to bring your editing device if you plan to edit. If you cannot come for the whole time, please pop in for a minute and say Hi! |
