I don't think that this article meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines, and reliable sources are very hard to find to support it. There is already an article on the Lebanese Arabic dialect, and the nationalist aspects of the topic of this article are already covered in the dialect article. This should likely become a redirect to the existing Lebanese Arabic article. ← George [talk] 01:11, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Redirect to Lebanese Arabic seems to me as the best course of action. It's not even clear from the article whether these are in fact two different things or the same thing, in any case they must be too related to have distinct articles. Greenleaf (talk) 04:03, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment I don't really know enough about Semitic languages to able to address this topic very intelligently, but are we really certain this article is about the Lebanese dialect of Arabic, as opposed to some other tongue with roots in ancient Phoenicia, and whatnot? Because I'm rather getting the impression it may be. KevinOKeeffe (talk) 11:05, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- CIA world fact book says :
- Languages: Arabic (official), French, English, Armenian
- Wikipedia article seems to agree.
- Nothing wrong with this, but I have the feeling that the site mentioned has a rather nationalistic tone. Given all evidence, I'd wager a guess that what we deal with is just another name for Lebanese Arabic. Greenleaf (talk) 12:26, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- My best understanding of the situation is that there exists a nationalist, political movement within Lebanon, that considers Lebanese to not be an Arabic dialect, but to instead be a language of its own. Scholars and linguists, on the other hand, consider it to just be another dialect of Arabic. The Lebanese language article is written from that (non-neutral) nationalistic point of view, describing the Lebanese dialect as its own language, while the Lebanese Arabic article is about the dialect. I think that the nationalistic idea of Lebanese as a language is mentioned elsewhere on Wikipedia, and that it represents too much of a non-notable, minority view to warrant an article of its own. ← George [talk] 23:03, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- Speedy keep under WP:SK ground 1: the nominator does not think this article should be deleted.—S Marshall Talk/Cont 22:21, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Where can I nominate an article to be turned into a redirect then? I thought it should be deleted, then a redirect page created in its place. I don't view any of the unsourced material in the article to be worthy of merging. ← George [talk] 22:24, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Oh, sorry—you're quite right that I should have pointed you to the correct venue rather than just saying "not here". That's entirely my fault and I apologise profusely.
You don't need to discuss a redirect. Per WP:BRD, you just do it.
It may be that someone reverts you, in which case you should discuss the matter with them on the article's talk page in order to seek a consensus.
Deleting the article is not done unless it should be a redlink. That's because of Wikipedia's copyright licensing provisions rather than for any internal reason, so "delete and redirect" is simply not a possible outcome; but the only difference in practice is that the previous content will be visible in the redirect's history page.
If you would like to go this route, this debate can be closed under the aforementioned speedy keep ground.—S Marshall Talk/Cont 22:40, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes, I think that's the best course of action then. This page really should be a redirect to Lebanese Arabic. Thanks for explaining the next steps to me, and feel free to close this at will. Cheers. ← George [talk] 22:43, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
