The result was speedy keep. Speedy Keep #1. Nomination was withdrawn; great collaboration to create a better target; merge & redirect to Mária Barta. (Decided to call it a speedy keep rather than a straight-out merge/redirect because the nomination was withdrawn. Effect is the same.) Joyous! Noise! 16:31, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Update: Withdraw nom, this article should be Merged and Redirected to: Mária Barta per WomenArtistUpdates contributions and creation of an appropriate redirect site for merging the content. Netherzone (talk) 17:17, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
I'm unable to find anything to substantiate the notability of this artist after an online search and an exhaustive WP Library resources/database search. The BEFORE only revealed a few auction house listings and a few works for sale from commercial galleries. (Note there is a notable water polo player with the same name, but that is a different person.) The article currently has one source for a name change he filed in 1902. There were three citations to FamilySearch which I removed as it is not considered a reliable source per WP:RSP. I have been unable to find any exhibition records, art reviews, museum collections, public art works or anything else that would contribute to an artist's notability. Fails WP:GNG and WP:NARTIST. Bringing it here for the community's feedback on whether or not it should be retained in the encyclopedia. Netherzone (talk) 20:38, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

- Comment - István Barta does have a listing at Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon - Internationale Künstlerdatenbank - Online via Wikipedia Library. Putting the text in translator, I can confirm birth and death, but cannot show notability. The English Wikipedia article appears to be a straight-forward translation of the Hungarian Wikipedia article with the same sub-standard references. I can't find anything to add to this article. Quick question - does listing in Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon - International Artist Database - Online confer notability? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 00:50, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, I saw that you added that to the article, good find WomenArtistUpdates! If the Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon - International Artist Database (which I'm not familiar with) is the same as a Dictionary of National Biography then he would meet criteria #3 of WP:ANYBIO. Here is more info on the Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon at the Thieme-Becker article which describes it as a "German biographical dictionary of artists". I don't know if that is considered the same as a "National Biographic Dictionary" in the world-of-wikipedia. I recall some years ago an editor told me that using a "Dictionary of Women Artists" did not count for notability (I disagreed). So I really don't know. If Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon counts towards ANYBIO notability I will withdraw the nom. Netherzone (talk) 01:09, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
- Comment - I think István Barta's listing in the International Artist Database is due to his siblings Maria and Lajos, either one would have been a better choice for an article in English. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:00, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
- Interesting. I think he also went by the name Stefano Barta (which would make sense given the fact he was an Esperantist). See here:[1] Netherzone (talk) 01:29, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
- Perhaps the solution could be to have an article on Maria, with a paragraph about her siblings. Then redirect for the 2 brothers. I hope to find the time over the weekend to launch something, unless others want to straight-up delete. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 21:15, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
- That sounds like a great alternative, since Maria is notable but does not have an article on en-WP. A good solution! Netherzone (talk) 21:42, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
- Netherzone I created Maria. All edits welcome. Also any suggestion of where the article should live, like a move to "Barta Family". Or a case could be made to have Lajos Barta as the main subject. I still have no idea what type of source Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon is or if it confers notability. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 17:08, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
- I have withdrawn the nomination. Great work on this! Thank you, WAU. Netherzone (talk) 17:21, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks Netherzone! Should I turn the page into a redirect or shall I await consensus? WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 18:46, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what the correct procedure is, whether the AfD should first be closed or not. Hopefully an admin or super-experienced closer will come by soon and can shed some light on the right next step. Netherzone (talk) 18:54, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
