VisualEditor newsletter

Hey Hot Stop. We've just rolled out a new version of the VisualEditor :). Changes and patches include:

  • Newly added templates now list their available parameters if TemplateData is available;
  • The load for the VisualEditor on apages is now 4 KiB, down from 119 KiB;
  • Feedback dialog is no longer chased off the screen by typing (bug 50538)
  • Fixed the Monobook issues around z-indexes (bug 50241)
  • Undoing an image resize doesn't make everything look bad
  • In the image dialog, "Caption content" is now just "Caption"
  • Tweaked tooltip references to VisualEditor to instead talk about "source mode"

Those are the big ones; more coming at the end of this week or early next week :). It's a short list, but the load issue took up a lot of time, as did TemplateData, and are both pretty big changes. If you've got any questions, drop them on my talkpage. Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 01:22, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

VisualEditor newsletter

Hey Hot Stop! We've just deployed some fixes to the VisualEditor. These include:

  • "Edit" will load the latest version, not the version you're looking at (bug 49943)
  • "Edit" will load the latest version, not the version you edited last time if this is your second edit (bug 50441)
  • VE edit section links will load the latest, not original, version in diff view preview (bug 50925)
  • Foo and similar repeated tags will not get corrupted any more (bug 49755)

In the meantime, testing is proceeding well, and hopefully we can get some more fixes out over the next couple of days. If you're interested in helping out, we have a set of open tasks we'd really appreciate your assistance with :). Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 07:59, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

VE newsletter

Hey Hot Stop

We just deployed another VisualEditor release; bugs fixed include:

  • Firefox 13/14 has been temporarily blacklisted, to avoid the insertion of broken links [[./that look like this]] (50720)
  • Changing a reference in a template should no longer produce the bright red "you don't have a references block!" error (bugzilla:50423)
  • Notices are now shown if you're editing a protected or semi-protected page (bugzilla:50415)
  • The template inspector will no longer invite you to insert parameters that are already being used (50715)
  • Same as above, but with aliases (50717)
  • Parameter names in the template dialogue now word-wrap (50800)
  • The link inspector will not show in the top left if you hit the return key while opening it (49941)
  • Hitting return twice in the link editor will no longer introduce a new line that overwrites the link (51075)
  • Oddly-named categories no longer cause corruption (50702)
  • The toolbar no longer occasionally covers the cursor (48787)
  • Changing the formatting of text no longer occasionally scrolls you upwards (50792)

Not specific bugs, but other things; cacheing is now improved, so people should stop seeing temporary breaking when the VisualEditor updates, and RTL support has received some patches. I hope this newsletter is helpful to people; I'll send out another one with the next deployment :). Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 10:09, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

VE newsletter

Hey Hot Stop! Another set of patches :). Today we have:

  • Required template parameters are now automatically added to new templates (50747)
  • Templates with piped links now display correctly when you alter them (50801)
  • If your edit token expires, you're now informed of it (50424).
You still won't be able to save - that's due to be fixed on Monday :).

More on Monday, I suspect. Hope you have a good weekend :). I should also have some news about the IP launch pretty soon. Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 13:17, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Reverted edit at Talk:America

Why was my edit to Talk:America reverted? Rob (talk) 20:28, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

Are you shitting me? The same guideline you cited is strongly against editing others' comments. Hot Stop talk-contribs 20:39, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
I'm removing the comment as Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines#Layout. It says "To avoid confusion, the latest comment in a thread should be posted in chronological order and not placed above earlier comments." It also says you can edit others comments for "Fixing layout errors". Regards, Rob (talk) 20:47, 21 July 2013 (UTC)
The key word is should, except when it is directly pertinent to the comment directly above, which is why it was placed there. It does not say you may remove or strike the comment, which is what happened. - SudoGhost 22:17, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

You are welcome to give ideas about the future of this guideline at WT:D or to ignore this message. Tbhotch. Grammatically incorrect? Correct it! See terms and conditions. 05:48, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

Edits to American Revolutionary War infobox

I noticed you are reverting edits made to the "Result" segment of the infobox over on the American Revolutionary War page. The edit you are specifically reverting is "American Independence" to "American victory and independence from British Empire" (or words to that effect). Please be advised that you are making these reversions AGAINST established consensus. There was a consensus agreed upon months ago on the talk page of the American Revolutionary War page, which eventually favoured the use of "American Independence". I was the member who initiated the debate. "American victory" was considered biased as it ignores the contributions made by the American allies of France, Spain and the Netherlands. "Allied victory" was not favoured, so "American independence" was selected to better reflect the outcome and acknowledge contributions from America's allies during the war. Please refrain from making edits against established consensus and debate the issue on the talk page. I will inform you, however, that as this motion was agreed upon by the majority of the community, it is unlikely to be turned. In the meantime, please refrain from edit warring. (RockDrummerQ (talk) 01:58, 17 September 2013 (UTC))

1) I was in that discussion, there was no consensus. 2) Are you seriously suggesting that when one side in a war accomplishes its primary goal (in this case independence) that it's not victory? Stop being a pedantic troll. Hot Stop talk-contribs 02:09, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
1) If you was in that discussion, you will know that the term "American Independence" was agreed upon to be used, and has been used since that discussion. That is, until you decided to persistently revert edits against established consensus. Please refrain from doing so, or you will be reported. If you have a problem with established consensus, then take it to the talk page. Please do not bring obvious selective memory into this. 2.) Except the United States was not alone in its fight. It is no secret that French involvement proved decisive. Help from Spain and the Netherlands certainly didn't go amiss either. Calling it an "American victory" would be the same as calling the Peninsular War a "British victory", because it blatantly ignores the vast contributions made by the other powers. America would not have succeeded when it did without the French, the same way Britain could not partake in the Peninsular War without Spanish and Portuguese support. The addition of the King's German Legion was also no small contribution. "American victory" is an obvious incredulous ignorance of the contributions made by the other powers, and thus would not be accurate. If you have a problem with this, desist immediately from effectively vandalising the page and take it to the talk page, or you will be reported. (RockDrummerQ (talk) 12:19, 17 September 2013 (UTC))

Information icon Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. You appear to be engaged in an edit war with one or more editors according to your reverts at United States v. Manning. Although repeatedly reverting or undoing another editor's contributions may seem necessary to protect your preferred version of a page, on Wikipedia this is usually seen as obstructing the normal editing process, and often creates animosity between editors. Instead of edit warring, please try to reach a consensus on the talk page.

If editors continue to revert to their preferred version they are likely to be blocked from editing. This isn't done to punish an editor, but to prevent the disruption caused by edit warring. In particular, editors should be aware of the three-revert rule, which says that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. While edit warring on Wikipedia is not acceptable in any amount, breaking the three-revert rule is very likely to lead to a block. Thank you. Even though the page is now protected, I'm posting this 3RR message for you in the interest of balance. IrishStephen did a 4/5RR, so he got the stronger warning, and I reported him. S. You mention in Talk:2013 about how hard it would be to mention the correct pronunciation of a year. Read my comment there to explain that a year can have one, two or three valid ways to pronounce it, so the year has to compute whether one, two or three methods are valid. Edit war with Two-Fisted Tales

Hi, Hot Stop. I also don't use Wikipedia terribly frequently any more but I logged on today and noted first that Two-Fisted Tales had reverted three of my edits to remove his publicity-seeking contributions regarding his (presumably) poetry in unrelated articles. Because he'd ignored my request for discussion on the Abraham Lincoln II article, I went to his talk page and saw your notice and his response there. I have added a request there that he please move the discussion to the Abraham Lincoln II talk page. No idea if he'll agree. In any event, seeing your notice, I have not re-reverted his edits pending an outcome of this discussion. Please let me know if I should do something additional or different. Thanks. --Pergish1 (talk) 22:50, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

I think you handled it correctly. Looks like someone else undid his edits to that page before I could respond to you. Hot Stop 23:54, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

GOCE December 2013 Blitz wrap-up and January Drive invitation

December Notes from the Guild of Copy Editors

The December blitz ran from December 8–14. The theme for this blitz was articles tied in some way to religion. Seven editors knocked out 20 articles over the course of the week. Our next blitz will be in February, with a theme to be determined. Feel free to make theme suggestions at the Guild talk page!

The January 2014 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in October and November 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2013. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in October and November 2012", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there!

Coordinator election: Voting is open for candidates to serve as GOCE coordinators from 1 January through 30 June 2014. Voting will run until the end of December. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

– Your drive coordinators: Torchiest, Baffle gab1978, Jonesey95 and The Utahraptor
