Hello, Tobyhoward,

Thank you for creating Noto: An Unexplored Corner of Japan.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

All 3 References are copies of the book. Need some independent sourcing to establish notability beyond it's old and exists

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Slywriter}}. Remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Decadence film Theatrical release poster (1994).jpeg

edit

A tag has been placed on File:Decadence film Theatrical release poster (1994).jpeg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 09:36, 4 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Man of Africa film frame (1953).png

edit

Thank you for uploading File:Man of Africa film frame (1953).png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 15:16, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Opening sentence

edit

MOS:LEAD says, "Do not overload the first sentence by describing everything notable about the subject ... Avoid cluttering the first sentence with a long parenthesis containing alternative spellings, pronunciations, etc., which can make the sentence difficult to actually read; this information should be placed elsewhere." Although it is common to include alternative names, people don't need to know incredibly obvious things like "it's also sometimes referred to without a definite article". As the MOS once again says, "Use the first sentence of the article to provide relevant information that is not already given by the title of the article." Thus, you don't need to tell people things that are already in the title. If the title is "Zebra Farm" in the US and "Crazy Horses" in the UK, that should be mentioned. One of them isn't going to be in the title, and people may be confused if they end up at an article with a different title than they searched for. Coordinates

edit

I notice you have added extremely long decimal coordinates to a number of articles. Google Maps has taken to providing 16-digit coordinates in what is believed to be a copyright trap scheme. That level of precision is in the 1/100th of a micrometer range. WP:OPCOORD and MOS:COORDS calls for rounding or truncating coordinates (tldr: use DD°MM'SS" or D.dddd° for everything). Replaceable non-free use File:Portrait of Penny Spencer.png

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Portrait of Penny Spencer.png. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:51, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Dylan Thomas film frame (1962).jpeg

edit

Thank you for uploading File:Dylan Thomas film frame (1962).jpeg.

Thank you. Whpq (talk) 15:12, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Reelstreets.com

edit

I see you've been adding links to this website. Do you have any connection to it? I can't really imagine that anyone besides you has ever heard of it. There's almost nothing on Google about it, unlike the IMDb, which is discussed regularly in reliable sources. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 03:32, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

No, I have no connection whatseover with ReelStreets. While it is an "unreliable source" in the IMDB sense, IMHO its informatiion is good, and I think it adds value to film articles and makes the article better. It is self-published and so ineligible as a source, so I list it as an External Link. As for being only known by me, I don't think that's the case. It has been in existemce since 2003 and I would say it is fairly well-known by UK film enthusiasts, and it has been mentioned in programmes on the UK film TV channel Talking Pictures TV. Tobyhoward (talk) 06:37, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm really considering blocking you for spamming this website. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 03:00, 29 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Would you please explain what you believe is the issue? I am a serious editor and I act in good faith. I have absolutely no desire to do anything contrary to WP policy. Tobyhoward (talk) 05:48, 29 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Please see WP:NOBLOGS. I have no idea why you're adding hundreds of links to this website. I count over 40 links to this website in the past week alone, and at least 100 links the previous week. This is a concentrated attempt to put the website in as many articles as you possibly can as quickly as you can – in other words, spamming. If I had evidence that you were being paid to do this, you'd already be blocked. I don't have any except for your industriousness, which isn't exactly unheard of on Wikipedia.

However, this industriousness should be put to some other use than promoting a niche blog. I just did a Google search on "Reelstreets", and there are only two pages of results, most of which are Reelstreet's website and its social media accounts. "Reelstreeets" site:variety.com gets no hits at all, whereas the same search with the IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, the British Film Institute, and other common external links get endless results (after 20 pages, each are still going). Once Reelstreets gets 20 pages worth of hits on Variety's website, and you've shown that it's not a self-published blog, you'll have a reason to mass-add it to Wikipedia. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 03:05, 30 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your explanation. I understand. I accept that ReelStreets does not meet WP notability criteria and I see that adding ReelStreets was therefore wrong, and especially to do so at scale as part of my workflow. I acted in good faith in the belief that ReelStreets added value to an article and my intention was never to spam, vandalise, or promote ReelStreets, with which I have no connection. My mistake was that I did not consider that the usual notability criteria apply to External Links as well as article text. From WP:NOBLOGS I can see that it clearly and obviously does. So I hold up my hands – I screwed up. It was right that another editor picked up on it. I'd like to fix the situation and I would be happy to start a process of undoing those edits manually. Removal of sourced information

edit

Hi @Tobyhoward: – on multiple occasions now (like on Vincent Ball) you have removed the birth year from the short description on biographies of living people, despite the fact that the birth year was adequately sourced in the article (and was sourced in the correct place). Once I can recognise as a mistake, but I have caught you doing this multiple times now, which begs the question: why? Are you even checking the body of the article properly to see if the birth information is sourced, or are you ripping out birth years if a source isn't planted in the lead of the article? Birth information should ideally be soured in the body of the article itself, not the lead. Thus you should also be checking this area for citations. Thanks Jkaharper (talk) 17:14, 16 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Jkaharper, I always check the whole article for reliable birth year sources, not just the lead section. In the Vincent Ball case, I didn't accept ref 4 (Crossroads Appreciation Soc.) because it is a self-published fansite; in reference 5 (Australian Women's Weekly) I didn't spot the "will be 50 in December", which was my mistake. So thanks for pointing that out and reverting it. If there are other specific cases you have spotted, please let me know and I will happily go back and check them. Thanks.
