Research resources

edit

I do not see the encyclopedic nature of your additions of sections entitled "Research Resources". (Wikipedia's manual of style dictates that the second word in a section heading such as this must be in lower case.) The research materials you are adding appear to lack coverage, lack breadth. For instance, at the Susan B. Anthony page you added three sources for SBA papers but you failed to note the tremendously important "Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony Papers Project" at Rutgers University, where researchers pored over 14,000 SBA and ECS papers including ones from the collections you listed. At Rutgers, the researchers amassed "the holdings of 202 libraries and government offices... [36] private collectors... 671 different periodicals and newspapers".

More importantly, the encyclopedia works by giving the reader WP:SECONDARY sources, not primary. Your links assume that a researcher would be reading the Wikipedia page to find the location of primary papers, which is hardly the case. I recommend putting a halt to your addition of "Research resources" sections in articles. Binksternet (talk) 16:32, 17 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the guidance on the manual of style issue regarding the proper capitalization of Wikipedia sections. The specific resource that you identified re: Susan B. Anthony is indeed a resource that I was not aware of. I was identifying research resources based on a search of ArchiveGrid, a professional archival search tool that draws on catalog records and finding aids from archival repositories from around the world. The ECA/SBA site did not show up in that resource.
The work to add information about primary resources was being done as part of a larger movement by professional archivists and librarians in the United States to use social media to guide the public to primary sources should they choose to go beyond the secondary sources. A number of colleagues of mine have been adding such information to Wikipedia articles for the past several years: to date, your message to me is the first instance that I know of where it has been suggested that such additional information not be included. The additions and edits - where made - to existing articles as well as the creation of new articles has complied with the WP:SECONDARY requirement: the primary resources are being provided for further inquiry, not to base the text of the articles themselves. Stevenmg (talk) 20:04, 17 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I wonder at the number of scholars who will consult Wikipedia to find primary documents. Is the "larger movement" worth the trouble? If so, such collections are to be listed down further per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (layout). Choosing among the selections at MOS:APPENDIX I would venture that these primary collections could be listed under Notes, References, Further reading, or External links. However, collections are not actually references used to write the article, and they are not always "publications" for further reading. They are also not always formatted as URLs for External links. Thus, they do not fit neatly into WP:LAYOUT as currently formulated. I'm going to start a discussion about this at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (layout). See you there! Binksternet (talk) 20:30, 17 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
At the talk page there was just a little bit of discussion, but the opinion expressed was generally in favor of what you are doing. The advice was to put the collections of primary sources not in its own section but to add them to the "Further reading" section if there is one, and create that section if not. Cheers! Binksternet (talk) 05:38, 21 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
I just read the discussion at WT:LAYOUT. I would not describe myself as "generally in favor of" this approach. It might be preferable to report this information in actual paragraphs of text as part of the article, e.g., "Smith's personal papers are archived at..."
However, if you decide to keep doing this, I ask that you follow WP:ACCESS#Lists by omitting the blank lines between list items. The MediaWiki software processes this (for example) as three completely separate lists, each of which contains exactly one item. WhatamIdoing (talk) 04:28, 22 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Conoley

edit

As reviewing administrator, I moved the article to Jane Conoley, as she is the only person of that name in WP, and probably will remain so. I also removed all her publications except her books--they're sufficient. If you want, you could reinsert a list of a very few of her most important or most recent peer-reviewed articles, but we do not include book chapters, lectures, and similar work. WP is not a CV. I removed all university committees--they're not relevant to an encyclopedia. I removed her non academic positions, but since she was a clinician, key ones might be appropriate to add back--but not all.

I think it would be well to also remove the various editions of Mental Measurements Yearbook, etc.from the books section--she is already listed as editor of that exceedingly important series--you might indicate which ones she is responsible for in the editorships section. Please add ISBNs for the books--it's our standard practice. And please add major book reviews of her work--it's an important factor in notability.

The article as it stood could have been deleted for being a copyvio of her CV. I didn't want to do that, so I did the necessary basic editing. Please do not add back the material, except for what I've indicated. DGG ( talk ) 03:54, 10 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

persondata

edit
  1. here's how the hack to see persondata works; it's a line of javascript you add to your "personal" javascript pages (each user has a personal javascript and css page that controls their individual viewing experience);
  2. but I encourage working on wikidata; since hopefully persondata will soon pull from wikidata and not the other way around. Let me know if you need help getting started. Adding descriptions to items is always useful; you could, for instance, search on 'steven' and disambiguate them all, based on their wikipedia articles :) wikidata tools also help with editing. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 16:47, 27 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of William A. Campbell (Tuskegee Airman), and it appears to include material copied directly from http://socialarchive.iath.virginia.edu/xtf/view?docId=campbell-william-a-cr.xml.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

GLAM Project banner

edit

Steve, take a look at Talk:Pritzker Military Museum & Library. They have a GLAM project on-going. The Project page will give you some ideas on how to set up the banner for the UCR page. (For the time being, I'm going to remove the redlinked project banner.) Happy GLAMing! – S. Rich (talk) 03:54, 24 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

S. Rich: I was updating/renaming the banner which caused it to temporarily be red linked. Unless you have see anything inappropriate in my doing so, I will restore the banner but with the updates completed. Stevenmg (talk) 13:34, 24 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Rollback

After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback can be used to revert vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback may be removed at any time.

If you do not want rollback, then contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some information on how to use rollback, you can view this page. I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, just leave me a message on my talk page if you have any questions. Happy editing! Malinaccier (talk) 22:44, 4 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Maycie Herrington, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page St. Augustine's College (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Wikiproject:UC templates

edit

Hello! I noticed you were working on making a UCR specific project template... I have the same goal for Davis so I have been experimenting with setting up "task forces" inside the main {{WikiProject University of California}} template.

Here's the experimental code:

See Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_University_of_California/Davis and Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_University_of_California/Riverside for the template in action. The parameter is UCD=yes and UCR=yes, respectively.

This will enable us to tag campus-by-campus articles under the aegis of the core Wikipedia:WikiProject University of California project -- each campus could have a "campus task force" page in the wikiproject, which in turn can link to our library initiatives etc. For the moment, I set up the ten campus pages with a category tree on each, but they could be much expanded. Let me know what you think, and I can work on getting the other campuses in there. -- phoebe / (talk to me) 20:01, 6 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

some hints

edit

1. In the See also sections, don't add links which are already used in the text, see MOS:SEEALSO. 2. When you revert vandalism, a long edit summary isn't needed. Just type "rvv". (For more abbreviations, see WP:GLOSSARY & WP:ESL.) Happy editing. – S. Rich (talk) 22:23, 13 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Re notability tags, part of the WP article development process involves tagging with templates. The tag has links which will assist editors in article research & development. And the tags are automatically indexed so that interested editors can find them and do improvements. You might also add other projects to the Tuskegee airmen articles, such as aviation, biography, and military history. Doing so may have some success in attracting attention. – S. Rich (talk) 03:58, 14 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Steve, when using the template {{cite book}}, the "pages" parameter is for the specific pages the citation provides in terms of the article text. Not the total number of book pages. (I learned this myself only recently.) If the material comes from a single page, we use the "page" parameter. (We do not use both "pages" and "page" in any citation with this template.) Thanks. – S. Rich (talk) 04:34, 14 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wiki Loves Pride 2014

Hi Stevenmg. In case you are not aware, there is an upcoming campaign to improve coverage of LGBT-related topics on Wikipedia, culminating with an international edit-a-thon on June 21. See Wiki Loves Pride 2014 for more information. If you are interested, you might consider creating a page for a major city (or cities!) near you, with a list of LGBT-related articles that need to be created or improved. This would be a tremendous help to Wikipedia and coverage of LGBT culture and history. Thanks for your consideration, and please let me know if you have any questions! --Another Believer (Talk) 18:26, 13 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited David Moretti, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page R3 (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Organized labour project

edit

Thank you for earlier joining the Organized Labour project. I've been a participant in the project since 2006 and am helping with a revival of it. As part this we are introducing a new membership system, which will help with communications among participants. This involves creating a membership file for each participant within your user space (you can see an example of my membership card here: User:Goldsztajn/WikiProjectCards/WikiProject Organized Labour). This system is already in operation within a number of wikiprojects (such as Women in Red and Medicine). You will not have to do anything, myself or someone else from the project will create the relevant file within your userspace. However, I am conscious that it is not polite to change an editor's userspace without notice. If I don't hear from you in the negative, I will go ahead with making the change after the 18th of January. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Many thanks for supporting the project, in solidarity, --Goldsztajn (talk) 23:47, 11 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

The Wikimedia LGBTQ User Group is holding online working days in May. As a member of WikiProject LGBT studies, editing on LGBTQ issues or if you identify as part of the LGBTQ community, come help us set goals, develop our organisation and structures, consider how to respond to issues faced by Queer editors, and plan for the next 12 months.

We will be meeting online for 3 half-days, 14–16 May at 1400–1730 UTC. While our working language is English, we are looking to accommodate users who would prefer to participate in other languages, including translation facilities.
