November copy edit drive
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!
The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue. Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page. Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style. Awards and barnstars A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page. Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive! |
How's your Online Ambassador experience going so far?
Hi Rock drum/Archive 4,
We're starting to get into the busy part of the semester for Online Ambassadors, and we want to check in and see how you're doing, what your opinions about where we are now, and any feedback you may have.
Please answer these questions either on my talk page or send them to me by email.
1. How many mentees are you currently working with?
2. Have you reached out to students who don't have mentors yet? If not, would you be willing to?
3. What do you think of the content of messages on the Google Group?
4. What do you think of the volume of messages on the Google Group?
5. Do you participate on the Google Group much? If not, what would make you participate more?
6. Are there any problems you've experienced so far?
7. Is there anything else Sage or the rest of the Public Policy Initiative team could do to make your experience as an Online Ambassador better?
8. Are you okay sharing your username with your answers to our Public Policy Initiative team, or would you prefer to remain anonymous?
Thanks for your feedback! --Ldavis (Public Policy) (talk) 19:27, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

Reviewer permission
Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged revisions, underwent a two-month trial which ended on 15 August 2010. Its continued use is still being discussed by the community, you are free to participate in such discussions. Many articles still have pending changes protection applied, however, and the ability to review pending changes continues to be of use.
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under level 1 pending changes and edits made by non-reviewers to level 2 pending changes protected articles (usually high traffic articles). Pending changes was applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.
For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't grant you status nor change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.
If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:18, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

Hello and welcome to this, the third edition of our WikiProject's newsletter. In this month's newsletter, I encountered a problem, well, two problems actually. I needed some help with the production: suggestions and other writers. As with last month, if you have any suggestions for the newsletter, please add them at the Tips Desk. If you would like to write some of the next issue, that's even better! Just come go over to the main Newsletter page to see where you can help out, and of course, as always, please give us your feedback on this edition, on the talk page. Until next time, happy editing!

Regarding reversions in CHERUB
You recently reverted an edit I made to the CHERUB page (specifically the Sequel section) wherein I had removed the name Aramov Series and replaced with Cherub Series Two. Your reason for that reversion was "Err... look at the references". I did look at the references. The main page is entitled simple The New Series. While the page does contain the word "aramovindex" in the URL, this does not indicate that the series will bear that name. The individual book descriptions (here, here and here) also use the word Aramov in the URL, and also describe that there is an Aramov gang involved in the plotlines, but still do not give the title Aramov series. The only reference which gives the new series a name at all is this one, which calls them simply Cherub Series Two. Can you provide me with any input that reliably defines that these books will go by the title Aramov series? WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 21:42, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi WikiDan61, I don't want to start an argument so I'm going to send Rob an email. It may take a few days before I get a reply but I'll post the answer here ASAP. Regards, Rock drum Ba-dumCrash (Driving well?) 17:02, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Dan, sorry about the wait. I emailed Rob who said that the series is most likely to be called CHERUB. I asked him if he knew yet whether it would be called CHERUB, or CHERUB series 2, but he didn't yet know. Thanks, Rock drum Ba-dumCrash (Driving well?) 15:50, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- That's all well and good, but personal emails between you and the author of these books hardly count as a reliable source. Given that the only verifiable name for this series is Cherub Series Two as published on the website, I think that is the name that should be used in the article until any change is made. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 15:59, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- With all due respect, unless I am mistaken, that is what I said... Rock drum Ba-dumCrash (Driving well?) 16:00, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- Actually, no, you didn't actually say that you agreed to revert the text to "Cherub Series Two". You only said that the author had no information on what title the series would have. But I think we are vehemently agreeing now. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 16:02, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, I thought that reverting the text was a given, seeing as I agreed with you. But, yeah, go ahead, revert it or whatever :). Thanks, Rock drum Ba-dumCrash (Driving well?) 16:04, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

Please share you views on the current version of the proposed Online Ambassador selection process, which the steering committee has recommended for adoption by the ambassadors program. Once we settle on a selection process, we can start recruiting more Online Ambassadors for next term (in which we will have more students, and the students will be more involved with mentors from early on).--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 15:23, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Request for interview
Hi Rock Drum -
I'm a professor working with the GroupLens project at the University of Minnesota, trying to learn about how the adopt-a-user program functions so that we can hopefully develop tools and ideas that might improve it. Your user page indicates you have been adopted... would you be willing to have a conversation with me so I could ask you a bunch of questions about your interactions with the adopt-a-user program? (I'd be willing to do a phone call, instant messaging, or whatever way you would best prefer to do it.) I'm hoping that as a result of having a few of these conversations with people, I'll better understand how users in general get involved, how the adoptee / adopter pairings work out, and so on. Let me know -- I can also likely donate a little bit of money to the Wikimedia Foundation as a "thank you" for your efforts if you're interested. Thanks! SeparateWays (talk) 19:25, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi SeparateWays, first of all, sorry about the long wait but I would be interested in being interviewed. My adoption experience is pretty unlike most normal ones as my adopter has not set out any particular lessons or tests to take. I don't mind whether or not you donate some money to the WMF as a 'thank you' but it would be good. It would be best if the interview could be done on IRC as I am on that most days. Please ask me what times suit you. Thanks, Rock drum Ba-dumCrash (Driving well?) 16:59, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
- Fabulous, thanks for offering to help. I don't know what time zone you're in or where you are... I'm in the US, in CST. I can be available anytime in the afternoon (between 1pm and 4:30 pm or so) today (12/1), tomorrow (12/2), or next Tuesday / Wed (12/7, 12/8) at the same times. Does anything in there work for you? (And what IRC channel do you prefer?) SeparateWays (talk) 19:51, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
- Errr... I can do those times, but only if it's on a Saturday. Or via email or something. Sorry, Rock drum Ba-dumCrash (Driving well?) 19:57, 1 December 2010 (UTC)
- I might be able to make something else work. What's your availability like (in addition to Saturday, which I could do but would prefer to avoid)? SeparateWays (talk) 20:08, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Mentor for team of students
Hi, my name is James Fullerton, and I'm a teacher at Southern Lehigh Middle School in PA. Recently I've created a project that involves Wikipedia (WP) and small groups of students making a contribution to a WP article of their choosing, as long as the topic is related to the content of the course - being American Government, Civics, and Economics. For the past 4 weeks, students have become involved in the culture of WP, with many already narrowing in on a topic for their contribution. Here is the supportive material on Wikispaces (https://wikiedit.wikispaces.com/). Your assistance would be greatly appreciated! Would you be available to act as a mentor to a small group of students as they begin to offer additional content to an article of their interest? The team sizes are numbered between 5-7 students each. I will notify you as to who is in the teams with their WP user names. Jmfullerton (talk) 17:37, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

BLCAT
Hi,
Would you like to take a look at {{BLCAT}}
? I think it would be useful to have a generic way of linking to the BL catalogue by shelfmark. The only issue with this template is that it is likely to cock up on the more complex sort of shelfmark numbers such as "1231.l.(5*.)". Thanks, Fæ (talk) 13:33, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
- I thought about doing something like this, but nice work! Would it be worth making adapting this to be more like
{{British-Museum-object}}

Sure, however I'd like to see "bugs" such as how to deal with shelfmarks with brackets ironed out before finalising it and recommending it for wider use. I'm actually unclear about the structure of shelfmarks and it might be a useful question to discuss during the Friday workshops when there are some BL staff to help out (it might be worth creating an essay about it equivalent to the usefulness of WP:BMREF). There is also the basic problem of ensuring appropriate use, some editors might get confused between the shelfmark reference to the specific (printed) object and other more generic references (such as ISBNs and OCLCs) to a printed edition. There is also the "System number" listed in the catalogue (e.g. "015728373") and I would prefer to use something like that to generate a catalogue permanent link as shelfmark is actually using a textual search... As I write this I'm even more convinced that we could do with a chat with a BL member of the IT department involved in the catalogue design. I'll drop a note for Mike pointing to this thread as a head's up. Fæ (talk) 18:08, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

GLAMWIKI Derby
Hi, thanks for your suggestion here. But I must admit you are one person I have between my sites to get involved with this project. Do you fancy having a go with this tool? If not then thats cool too. (I'll have to find a different bait for my hook :-) ) Cheers Victuallers (talk) 15:40, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
- Do you mean you want me to get the bot to do the tagging? Regards, Rock drumALT 15:44, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
- If you would, but that wasn't the primary objective? I'm not sure where you are in the world, but I am also keen to get you interested in that project... Victuallers (talk) 15:51, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
- There seem to be no unassessed articles within the project, anyway. But, yeah, I'd be happy to help wherever I can. :-) Rock drumALT 18:22, 15 January 2011 (UTC) :=) Victuallers (talk) 19:10, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Infobox collections
Hi RD,
I can see you embedded {{italictitle}} into this infobox. It's not clear to me that the guidelines of WP:ITALICTITLE would be met with articles such as Tapling Collection as it is not a taxonomic name or any of the other types of article that might be covered. Could we take this bit out so it can be left as a choice in the article rather than hiding it in the code of this template? Thanks, Fæ (talk) 19:03, 17 January 2011 (UTC)
- Done Feel free to make any more changes you want. Regards, Rock drum Ba-dumCrash (Driving well?) 19:12, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks,
Thanks for your participation in this years fundraiser/contribution team effort. It's the first time we've ever tried doing anything like this combined, and it worked really well. We look forward to your help next year! Regards, ⇒DanRosenthal (WMF) 08:54, 20 January 2011 (UTC)
