Where is says: "The honorific titles Sir, Dame, Lord and Lady are included in the initial reference and infobox heading for the subject of a biographical article, but are optional after that. The title is placed in bold in the first use of the name." Where "first use" is assumed to include the infobox, I guess? Except that the infobox is always placed to the right of the opening sentence and is thus not first use in appearance? You've read the advice on pre-nominals at Template:Infobox person? It mentions that those particular honorific titles should be included in both the initial reference and infobox heading, so emboldened along with the person's name, i.e. Sir Elton John, not Sir Elton John in both the article and infobox. I do agree however MOS does contradict the Template:Infobox person regarding pre-nominals with the example the latter gives gives. There are numerous examples of the correct use of a Sir or Dame with another honorific prefix, for instance The Right Honourable, e.g. Winston Churchill, John Major, Sian Elias, Mary Arden, etc.. although these tend to be political rather than pop culture figures. Yes but, as I suggested above, the first line of the text and the first line of the infobox can't both be "first use" can they? That's why I assumed Template:Infobox person took precedence. It's totally clear and even gives an example of exactly this use. I had also assumed that those with "The Right Honourable" were a special case. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:50, 30 December 2017 (UTC)

Anything placed in the infobox heading, the person's name in this case, is automatically emboldened. The MOS is referring to the first use in the article as per my Elton John example. The template is clear in and of itself but as mentioned it does contradict the MOS in this regard. Given that MOS appears to be the most recent updated advice I would defer to it rather than the template. Phinn (talk) 16:03, 30 December 2017 (UTC)

Well, there's an obvious contradiction, so I think someone should raise the question explicitly at Template talk:Infobox person before any more reversions are made. It's not clear to me what is "correct" and what is "incorrect", although I'm pretty sure we're meant to have some consistency. So I've asked the question there. For what little it's worth, I've usually bolded "Sir" as part of the name in the first line of the article. I suppose because of the way people say "Sir Barry", keeping it attached to the forename, even in relatively informal contexts, I think of it as part of the name in a way that other honorifics (Hon., Dr., Rev., etc.) aren't. Digging into the history of that particular guideline, it looks as though the person who wrote that was principally preoccupied with eradicating the "Sir Forename" style from the running text of articles. This probably merits further discussion; I know some editors feel very strongly that it shouldn't be considered part of the name. (I actually dropped by to suggest to Phinn that by convention, we don't hyphenate "Lord Lieutenant" in article titles, but perhaps we should be rethinking that, too.) PC

Hi Phinn! PC is only used as a post-nom by lords (see Privy_Council_of_the_United_Kingdom#Rights_and_privileges_of_members), not "commoners". The default signifier of a privy counsellor is the title "The Right Honourable"; if someone is already due this title, such as by being a baron or above, the post-nom PC is used to clarify things. I would hardly regard two reverts as engaging in an 'edit war' although it's interesting that my edits were also reverted twice and yet only I am being reprimanded. Hello, Phinn. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
