Bullit/Bullitt userbox

edit

Hallo: Bullitt is a film; Bullit (one t) is now a dab page. The user box at User:Mtmelendez/Userboxes/Bullit points to what's now a dab page (it used to be a redirect to the film from this wrong spelling). You might like to correct it? There are a lot of incoming links to the dab page, from user pages, and I think they're probably all from this userbox! PamD 22:07, 8 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Getting Wikimedians to the Olympic Games

edit

Hi. I am part of an effort to get Wikimedians access to the 2016 Summer Olympics as accredited reporters and photographers. Part of this effort includes covering the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Two Wikimedians have credentials to attend these games as reporters through Wikimedia Australia. As English Wikipedia does not allow original reporting, this is largely through Wikinews with a project page found at Wikinews:Paralympic Games. If you are interested in helping to get Wikimedians to the next Summer Olympics,I'd encourage you to assist with Wikinews efforts, and also to work on all language 2012 Summer Paralympic Wikipedia articles before, during and after the Games to demonstrate a track record of success. Thank you. --LauraHale (talk) 04:32, 17 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

A little help with an article for deletion

edit

Hi,

I know it's a bit random, but I thought that approaching an admin might help. I've created an article which is nominated for deletion. In my humble opinion, it might not be the article of the year, but it doesn't deserve deletion. Other articles in its category are not displaying superior standards. Would you mind taking a look?

While the article I am working on my slap some wrong I felt it was to different than BS and needed to be restored to its own article with much improvement and references which I am currently working on. After that guy showed up I was kind of frustrated he kept redirecting it while I was in the middle of working on it. My wifi connection with my neighbor is poor and unreliable so I save often to prevent loss of work. I believe my edit note made my point well. "It looks like horseshit right now but that will change and that is no bullshit. Try reversing those terms, it would not make sense." 172.56.11.217 (talk) 16:22, 4 March 2014 (UTC) PS I would join if more wiki editors were courteous like you have been but many are rude and obnoxious and I believe that turns many away from becoming an official registered editor.Reply

Need Some Help

edit

You said to ask for help so here I am. I want to create a redirect for Rocking Horse Shit to Horseshit. I have no idea how to do that or if it can be done easily. The term is used in the US, Ireland, Australia and I have referenced it's use in the article multiple times. I also need to improve my references to include retreived dates but I can figure that out from other articles. Still a work in progress and now that it is not buried it may receive some more experienced editoral help. Thanks. Sorry my neighbors WIFI signal IP changes all the time so I have a different IP now. 172.56.11.19 (talk) 12:54, 5 March 2014 (UTC) P.S. Cool to see your from Puerto Rico I dated a beautiful girl from Puerto Rico named Eugรจnia years ago and went to San Juan, El Yunque rainforest, snorkeling and Luquillo beach of course. I also drank to much rum but I have learned since then to respect Ron Bacardi 151. We went to Club Lazer in San Juan but I guess it is closed now.Reply

  • Ron Barcardi also needs a redirect. Surprised that was not done already.
Then I suggest you create an account. Members with accounts can create pages and redirects.ย :) - Mtmelendez (Talk) 14:45, 5 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
If Target cannot keep stuff secure how can wiki? Not willing to take the risk. How would being registered allow someone to redirect? That sounds like an admin function. I was hoping you could do the redirect.
Creation of articles and redirects can be made by normal users. And if you are afraid about privacy, Wikipedia's servers are pretty secure. Come on, join the project.ย :) - Mtmelendez (Talk) 15:21, 5 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Cafe Rico

edit

Hello Melendez, you seem to be familiar with Ponce and that's good we need people that can help with Ponce articles and the entire southern PR which seem to have been neglected quite a bit while you were gone. Since I am familiar with that region as well, perhaps it might be a good idea to keep each other in mind when making major revisions like the one at Cafe Rico. I reinstated the information you removed because WP:SELFPUB states that a SPS is an acceptable source as long as the information involved is information about theCafe Rico company itself.

That said, Cafe Rico's own website is an RS because (1) they are not making some outrageous claim (e.g., "We have made the world's best coffee for the last 200 years"); (2) they are not making a claim about a 3rd party (ex: "Maxwell House was fined by the Federal Government for not keeping clean production facilities"); (3) there is no doubt that the cited website is indeed Cafe Rico's corporate website; and (4) the Cafe Rico article is not based only on Cafe Rico's corporate website's information. Fundamentally, this means -among other things- that, for example, a list names of the Cafe Rico's company presidents does not violate WP:PRIMARY simply because it was published by Cafe Rico ("self-published"). On the other hand, the same list would be a violation of WP:PRIMARY if, say, Melendez walked into Cafe Rico's corporate office and was handed a handwritten list of company presidents by its front-desk receptionist from where Melendez then proceeded to populate the presidents' subsections of the Cafe Rico article. Hopefully we are in sync now.

I added some cites you requested, and will expand the biblio info later today as my real-life time allows. If you are also saying that, ideally, we should have more citations for the entire article, I would be the first editor to second that.

Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 20:27, 5 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Mercy. I've been away from the project for a while, trying to get back to full form again. My edits to Cafe Rico were made in good faith in keeping with Wikipedia's policies. I do not agree that the article meets the WP:SELFPUB criteria, in many of its aspects. The criteria, clearly states:

  • "the material is neither unduly self-serving nor an exceptional claim;"
    • I would argue that several claims within the article, which use the company's own website as the source, try to do just that:
      • "It was the first agricultural cooperative union in Puerto Rico."[1] (That is a notable claim, but who else backs it up?)
      • "It is the only coffee packaged in a vacuum, a technique used to preserve the coffee's aroma." (sounds like an advertisement)
      • "This will make the Las Americas location "the largest coffee roasting location in Puerto Rico" and the facility "the most modern coffee roasting facility in the Caribbean."[2][3] (Big claim with a big problem: those two statements are not in the source it refers to, so where did they come from?)
      • "The company has $10 million in resources, with reserves of $4 million." "During fiscal year 1962-63 the total volume of the cooperative was $35 million." "In the 1930s, the company had over $300,000 in escrow at the bank of Baltimore." "Annual 1965 sales are over $8 million." (this information should not be in the article, unless it is publicly distributed in reports, which are usually audited, or are reported by fiscal and credit agencies, such as SEC, Moody's, Fitch, etc. Any company can claim how much it earns and owns, but it needs to be backed up with independent sources. And why include financial information from the 1930s and 1960s in different parts of the article?).
  • "it does not involve claims about third parties;"
    • By saying it was the first to do something, or is the biggest at doing something, it indirectly states that it is better or more notable than its competitors, and therefore subtlety making the article as a sort of advertisement. To remove this concern, such information should be supported by independent third-party sources.
  • "the article is not based primarily on such sources."
    • This is my real concern. There are two main sources to this article: the Perla Del Sur article, and the company's website. The only two notable claims that the Perla article states is (1) that the company's products represent 60% of Puerto Rico coffee sales and (2) that the company renovated its Ponce facilities to consolidate its manufacturing there, and (3) that he company owns the Cafe Rico, Cafe Rioja, and Cafe Yaucono brands. Now, the first claim is a very important one, requiring equally important sources. I'm not sure if the author of the article and the newspaper investigated that claim, but assuming they did, we can leave it in the article. The second and third claims are not controversial, so obviously they can stay. All other claims and information in the article are either unsourced or use the company's website as a source. If the information is self-verifiable and non-controversial (per WP:SELFPUB), such as the company's locations, list of products, its headquarters, and its past presidents, then I'm okay with the information staying in the article. However, the claims that I stated above clearly do not meet the WP:SELFPUB exceptions, and constitute red flags ("surprising or apparently important claims not covered by multiple high-quality sources"), so I removed them.

Apart from that, I also removed the Past Presidents and Board of Directors list because I do not deem them necessary in a company article. Most articles I've seen only discuss key people related to the company, not its entire governing body, past and present. What information does this bring the reader of a Wikipedia article? If they want to find that information, its better they access the company's website. I'm ok with leaving the past presidents list, but the Board of Directors list should be removed.

Finally, my edits to the article also tried to fix up all the referencing format errors in the page. Since the article only uses two sources, as above, the References should use the "ref name" style to improve the MOS, but your revert now lists duplicates of such references, which aren't even consistent in the way they were included (compare this to this). Please, next time ask me to revert my edits so I can do it manually and leave the good stuff intact while re-inserting the removed content.

I'm sure we can find a consensus on this article, but it definitely needs work. Its current condition, to me, is not good for Wikipedia. - Mtmelendez (Talk) 02:13, 6 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Melendez, I took a quick look at your response above. I am currently tied up with a real-life commitment and wont be able to get back to this until the weekend. Please go ahead and tag the article as/where you deem necessary. I will find sources for what can be backed up via a 3rd party RS. Then we will decide the anything still in dispute. Fair? Thanks.
