My understanding is that we can't - not shouldn't, but can't - permanently block an IP number the way the code now works. Feel free to try though :) -- Pakaran 06:24, 9 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Cool idea - but you'll have to log in as proxyweb under that IP number first, otherwise it won't "share an IP address with" the proxyweb user. --Pakaran 06:29, 9 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I thought it would give me a "blocked because you share an IP with" but apparently not. *sigh* - Hephaestos 06:32, 9 Dec 2003 (UTC)
No, what you need to do is create a proxyweb user, log in as that user from the proxyweb site, and then block the user. Then the user will "share" the proxyweb IP number, or I'd think so. Might need to make 1 edit from proxyweb too. -- Pakaran 06:33, 9 Dec 2003 (UTC)
Oh, and you'd need to check 'c' for 'allow cookies' at proxyweb, or logging in will be impossible. -- Pakaran 06:36, 9 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I know why its not working. Proxyweb uses the same IP for all users - the share-IP thing may only work with slightly differing IP addresses (you know something like 3.4.5.X, can't rememeber the technical name for it) Dysprosia 06:39, 9 Dec 2003 (UTC)
It's logging me out every time I go to a new page, so it's fairly impossible to make an edit. - Hephaestos 06:40, 9 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Hi Hephaestos, as you have contributed to Baseball/temp, I'd like to ask for your opinion whether it's time to move the rewritten article to Baseball. Please comment at Talk:Baseball/temp. Thanks, Kosebamse 16:56, 9 Dec 2003 (UTC)

The title of the Beazley article has already been changed several times by various pedantic busybodies. As far as I can see no version is any better or worse than any other, so why don't you just leave it alone? Adam 07:42, 10 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Yes well I suppose that is fair enough - I just get sick of these circular arguments - pretty soon PMelvilleAustin or someone will come and change it back again, and so on... Adam 08:04, 10 Dec 2003 (UTC)

No worries in that department mate. PMA 08:26, Dec 10, 2003 (UTC)

Why skipped the redirect? [1] My understanding is that it is the same to the computer (i.e., not one is slower or more damage than the other). And actually redir is easier on the original writer. Just curious, because I occasionally see other Wikipedians skip redir. And never understood why. --Menchi (Talk)â 08:27, 10 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Double redirects

edit

Since you made the moves, can you fix all the redirects at the Kim Beazley articles? --Jiang | Talk 22:18, 10 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Got both of them. Now the redirects to the talk page work correctly. Thanks for the reminder. - Hephaestos 22:37, 10 Dec 2003 (UTC)

If you have a reason for removing the background of Image:Drumsfeld.jpg, then please discuss it. --Jiang | Talk 23:44, 10 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I don't see how it is POV. That flag is the official standard of the Sec of Defense. It reflects his position in the government. Is the American flag POV here too: Image:DianneFeinstein.jpg, Image:Jimmycarter.jpg? I really don't see your point, but if you insist on changing it, fill it in with a non-white background so it doesn't blend in with the page. --Jiang | Talk 23:56, 10 Dec 2003 (UTC)

And this Image:Geraldford.jpg too? --Jiang | Talk 00:09, 11 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I noticed you didn't change all the MediaWiki pages I edited. Was that intentional? In any case, do you think "< View article" would look better than just "< Article"? I think some additional emphasis for the links would be useful, although they probably shouldn't be in that part of the navigation bar in the first place.—Eloquence 07:37, Dec 11, 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing the Elizabeth Smart redirects. Daniel Quinlan 04:23, Dec 12, 2003 (UTC)

I'm glad we were able to come to an understanding about Lizzie. I do have one small remaining issue about the chosen title format, but this won't be the place where I take a stand on it. The format for the date should probably "(1987- )" with the extra space, instead of "(1987-)". There are too many other matters at issue to get involved in that relatively trivial debate. I've liked the AACR disambiguation format since long before I ever heard of Wikipedia. The simple fact that this solution arose as a compromise in settlement of another dispute may make it more acceptable, but don't be suprised if flak is raised by a whole new group of people. Eclecticology 08:03, 2003 Dec 12 (UTC)

It looks as though the secondary argument has come to a quick conclusion. (One can never really be sure.) The entry Talk:Elizabeth AnnSmart still exists, and needs to be deleted. This was my own typo (missing space) in the heat of battle. Eclecticology 08:20, 2003 Dec 13 (UTC)

Nico

edit
  • about Nico. He posted few revisionists sentences on the different talk pages. Examples: Even the migrants must be considered expellees, since their homeland was under occupation and Germans generally was discriminated and threatened in these areas. Source User talk:Nico I thought it would be correct to name them expellees, as that is what they name themselves. When they emigrated, Germany had not recognised the current borders. But do as you want. And in any event, what is wrong with considering East Prussia rightfully German, in accordance with international law (the Geneva protocols states: "It is illegal to permanently keep land militarily taken over and to expell and to replace the inhabitants") -- Nico 01:43, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC) Source Talk:Landsmannschaft Ostpreussen

He claims in Wikipedia, that some Polish or Russian areas, are rightfully German and are under occupation. Do we want to start again border disputes in Europe?? WolfgangPeters

I actually don't see what is "revisionistic" with these sentences. I just stated a fact: The (West-)German government actually considered these areas "occupied" when the people we are talking about emigrated. And it's not just "revionists" who thinks East Prussia should return to Germany. There are even Russians who thinks that. And after all, this is also just my private opinions, not what I write in any articles. Nico 13:14, 15 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Based on, what you stated yourself, it seems to be irresponsible to give you the rights to edit articles in Wikipedia. Attempt to violate existing borders is a crime in every state. WolfgangPeters

Hi Hephaestos, in case you didn't know - the above text is exactly the same as that which appears on the Wikipedia:Current disputes over articles page. I got it on my talk too, for some reason I have yet to fathom. :) Angela. 20:08, 15 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Yes. Still, it's a matter of some regret to me that I have to have stuff like LeAnn Rimes, Paul Levesque, etc on my watchlist. :-) Evercat 02:07, 19 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I removed your disambig pages for Adams, Massachusetts and Lenox, Massachusetts. The reason is that there's no ambiguity: it's not true that there are "two locales" called Adams, Massachusetts. There's only one locale, but only a subset of it designated by the census as a CDP. In other words, I don't think Adams (CDP), Massachusetts and Adams (town), Massachusetts actually constitute two different locales, inasmuch as the CDP is merely part of the town. Rather than having a disambig page, I put a link to the CDP page on the town page, and have the bald name redirect to the town. This is my reasoning, anyway, but I'm willing to be argued with. AJD 02:56, 19 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Your redirect is fine with me. It doesn't particularly matter to me whether "Shirley (town), Massachusetts" redirects to "Shirley, Massachusetts" or vice versa; when I set up the redirects I generally do whichever is more convenient -- i.e., I leave the existing page where it is and turn the blank page into a redirect to the existing one -- but I have no objection to someone reversing those redirects. Hephaestos, thanks for forging the Steven Saylor article into a more finely-crafted piece. Ensiform

I note you have been going around putting ampersand-mdash-semicolon into articles, something I can't think of any good reason for not minimizing.

ASCII is more universally readable, and colons, ellipses, etc. as well as double hyphens can generally have the desired semantic effect.(I'm told that my efforts to make the link to First Division in Derby County F.C. had the completely unintended effect of affecting "mdash" insertion there,so the use of this HTML markup would appear to break browser compatibility with Lynx.--L.E./[email protected]/12.144.5.2

HTML markup is ASCII. So is wiki markup. The server sends standard HTTP data. Since you seem to be the only one with this problem I tend to think it is rather your copy of Lynx that may be at the root of the problem. - Hephaestos 23:28, 4 Jan 2004 (UTC)
To be clear,I don't understand how the alleged punctuation changes in the Derby County article happened. All I was doing there was tinkering with the First Division link to direct it to the real article rather than a useless blank. But why have you been going around with ampersand-mdash-semicolon substitutions for actual characters?--L.E./12.144.5.2
You mean why am I fixing them? Em-dashes are actual characters. Double hyphens aren't standard; they should only be used when there is no viable alternative. - Hephaestos 05:58, 5 Jan 2004 (UTC)
We differ on how "viable" the em-dash-in-HTML is as an alternative to the actual typed characters.--L.E./12.144.5.2
We do indeed. - Hephaestos 01:33, 6 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Question: If the Myakka Skunk Ape Photos came from a Sherrif's office and are posted all over the internet, how could they be a copy right infringement problem any worse than that of the Sasquatch photo on the Bigfoot page?--User: Lizard_King.

Their site states they made enhancements to the original sheriff's office photos (which would make a public domain photo their intellectual artistic property), and that's plausible since the copy here and the copy there have the same border and the exact same size in bytes (32,201). - Hephaestos 08:17, 13 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Thank you. I will try to find more appropriate photos then. Perhaps the unenhanced versions, if I can find them.

Hello,
Letting you know that I asked Tim to block 204.96.197.145 (a static address used by Michael) for 1 month since Michael was coming back after the 24 hours of normal blocks wore off. To implement this block he changed the timestamp on the last person to block that address, which happened to be you. Image and table width

edit

Hi, is there some sort of clash between tables and the new image markup? The image on American Cocker Spaniel seems to have got squashed over a bit with your change. I am guessing that the image width is somehow not influencing the table width as it should. What do you think? -- sannse 17:14, 4 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Re images: I saw that, but I figured it was my browser bumping against the new code; I'd left the center tag in the table as before. I'm not really sure what's going on there. - Hephaestos 17:18, 4 Feb 2004 (UTC)
It sort of works with the table set at 270px width, but still doesn't quite look right - I'll keep fiddling -- sannse 17:29, 4 Feb 2004 (UTC)
I think images look better in a taxobox if you use "none", rather than "thumb" and specify the size. WormRunner 17:38, 4 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Aha! Thanks, I'll try that. Didn't know that was an option. - Hephaestos 17:39, 4 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Heh! I'd just this second found that as a possible solution and was hoping to be clever and fix it... I was too slow ;) Thanks both -- sannse 17:55, 4 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Looks like you can use "none" and "thumb". I think it's better with the magnifying glass image. -- sannse 18:20, 4 Feb 2004 (UTC)
