Survey: Use of Chronicling America on Wikipedia
My name is Donald Taylor and I'm the Wikipedian-in-Residence with the University of Maryland Libraries, Historic Maryland Newspapers Project. The Historic Maryland Newspapers Project is a part of the National Digital Newspaper Program, a joint program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities. We are digitizing historic state newspapers for inclusion in the Library of Congress's Chronicling America online digital collection of America’s historical newspapers.
We are conducting a survey of Wikipedia contributors who have cited Chronicling America as a reference in their edits to Wikipedia. It is the objective of our study to identify ways that Chronicling America might be made a better resource for people editing Wikipedia. We recently used Linkypedia to identify contributors who have used Chronicling America. As an editor who has made use of Chronicling America, we hope that you will take our survey.
If you are interested in taking our survey, you can do so at this website.
More information about the survey is provided before you begin answering survey questions. Participation in the survey is strictly voluntary. It should take you less than thirty minutes to complete. You must be at least 18 years old to participate. If you have any questions about this survey, you can contact Donald Taylor, Wikipedian-in-Residence for the Historic Maryland Newspapers Project, at [email protected], or Elizabeth Caringola, Historic Maryland Newspapers Project Librarian, at [email protected].
If you decide to take this survey, please do so within a week, by Sunday, 3 August 2014.
Thank you for your contribution to our study.

Non-free rationale for File:BarnettLogo15.png
Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:BarnettLogo15.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Question about COI, paid editing
Having noted many of your drafts at AfC, and that they are nearly all for commercial topics, mainly companies in the Southern US, I must ask if you are doing this as paid employment. I hope this isn't offensive, but it's rather unusual for someone to have a passion for local companies, and in particular companies that do not appear to be notable in any way. If you do have a conflict of interest, and in particular if this editing is paid, please take the steps below to declare your interest. This helps those of us reviewing at AfC because it gives us the context for the articles. Thank you, LaMona (talk) 00:07, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
Hello, Excel23. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:
- avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
- instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
- when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
- avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
- exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).
Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you.
Reply
I am not doing this as paid employment but merely as a hobby for companies I feel should have a Wikipedia artice. I'm also trying to establish notability of the articles from a neutral standpoint without any kind of advertisement in them.--Excel23 (talk) 01:22, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks. I should mention, though, that local companies are generally excluded from corporate notability unless they show wide media coverage (regional or national). So if your goal is to create articles for companies, please refrain from submitting ones that will not pass notability. It adds work for reviewers and for other editors to remove these. It's best not to create them in the first place. LaMona (talk) 01:50, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:BarnettLogo15.png
A tag has been placed on File:BarnettLogo15.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Archiving overdue
Hello. It appears your talk page is becoming quite lengthy and is in need of archiving. According to Wikipedia's user talk page guidelines; "Large talk pages become difficult to read, strain the limits of older browsers, and load slowly over slow internet connections. As a rule of thumb, archive closed discussions when a talk page exceeds 75 KB or has multiple resolved or stale discussions." - this talk page is 160.2 KB. See Help:Archiving a talk page for instructions on how to manually archive your talk page, or to arrange for automatic archiving using a bot. If you have any questions, place a {{help me}} notice on your talk page, or go to the help desk. Thank you. --Worldbruce (talk) 14:37, 23 December 2017 (UTC)

ArbCom 2018 election voter message
Hello, Excel23. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Non-free content use
Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. We always appreciate when users upload files. However, it appears that one or more of the files you have uploaded or added to a page, specifically Draft:Dell Marine, may fail our non-free policy. Most often, this involves editors uploading or using a copyrighted file of a living person. For other possible reasons, please read up on our Non-free criteria. Theroadislong (talk) 17:28, 29 September 2019 (UTC)The file File:WilmarIB15.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
unused, low-res, no obvious use
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:00, 17 November 2019 (UTC)

Donald A. Steinbrugge moved to draftspace
An article you recently created, Donald A. Steinbrugge, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. In addition, coverage has to be in-depth (aka signficant) about the subject, not just passing mentions. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. June 2021
Hello Excel23. The nature of your edits, such as the one you made to Draft:Donald A. Steinbrugge, gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.
Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.
Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Excel23. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Excel23|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}
. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. scope_creepTalk 23:49, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

I am not paid to make Donald A. Steinbrugge a Wikipedia article. I actually saw him in New York City which is where I got the idea to make him a page. Regardless, I will not edit his page and will let it go to deletion.--Excel23 (talk) 01:07, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
