Hebrew and Yiddish

edit

Hi Eliyak: Even tho as you note publicly on your user page (that may indicate a negative POV as regards Yiddish since Yeshivish is also based on Yiddish and Hebrew as well as the Aramaic of the Talmud) please note:

ye-XThis user will not speak Yeshivish if you threaten him with a pointy stick.

However, I have noted that recently in a few articles whose words are used in both Hebrew and Yiddish, you removed the Category:Yiddish words and phrases. I have reverted your edits because Hebrew, together with Old German are the two main linguistuic pillars and cores of Yiddish and Yiddish cannot exists without them (of course Yiddish has absorbed and adapted words and phrases from all the cultures and countries in Eastern Europe where Jews found themselves.) A while ago the process of trying to identify some key Yiddish words (that are indeed originally from Hebrew) but are very important and very obvious Yiddish words -- such as Mazel Tov for example was begun in that regard, because those kind of Hebrew words are standard in Yiddish as well. So please do not remove that category from words that have an obvious known use in Yiddish. Thank you. IZAK (talk) 08:23, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Kavod HaBriyot

edit

You removed the category Category:Talmud concepts and terminology with the notation "not a Talmudic method". Why? I don't see how there could be any question about its being a Talmudic term and the name of a Talmudic concept, so I don't understand why it shouldn't go in the category. The category refers to concepts and terminology, and makes no mention of "methods". I don't understand why the question of whether it's a "method" or not is relevant. Credible author

edit

Hello. A credible authors' reference is being "overrided" by edit-warring. I recently tried to add to the telescope article but this editor seems to think that his opinion overrides a VERY credible author in Mr. Richard Powers. I've been blocked before for edit-warring recently, so I don't want this to be another incident on my record.

Anyway, the other editor seemed to have asked his friend-type editors to form a consensus, so I will do the same. The Islamic connection here is, Al-Haytham. He is FUNDAMENTAL to the telescope and the FATHER of optics. By definition, the summary can include him since the radio and electro-magnetic telescopes are derogatory to the average person looking at the article; I wanted to add it to the history section since it looked cleaner. Samson

edit

Hi, I see you reverted my adding an {{in-universe}} tag to the article. While I believe it is such, the substance of my edit was not that the story is fiction, rather that it is treated as fact. As you rightly say in your edit summary, the historicity of the bible is contentious, and so I took objection to style like:

"Samson is a Herculean figure, who is granted tremendous strength through the Spirit of the LORD to combat his enemies and perform heroic feats unachievable by ordinary men"
"Samson lived when God was punishing the Israelites by giving them "into the hand of the Philistines."

et cetera. What I do like is quotes like this:

"He is described in the Book of Judges chapters 13 to 16.[1][2][3] He is believed to be buried in Tel Tzora in Israel overlooking the Sorek valley."

I recognise, in retrospect, that that specific tag was not quite appropriate for the situation. I maintain, however, that the article does need to be written from a third-party perspective, from outside the religion, and it is for that reason that, even if I did believe the bible to be true, I believe that the article falls into the same category as fiction, for the purposes of what perspective it needs to be written.

However, please let me know if I'm off-base here. I won't revert you, but I am interested to know what you think. — Werdna • talk 07:35, 29 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Template:Bible-in-universe

edit

Hi Eliyak! Looking at the history of this, it looks like you yourself objected to the use of Template:in-universe and attempted to come up with something with better wording. I think the difficulty here is that the in-universe series itself -- just the name of the template, even if its contents were completely changed -- has a history on Wikipedia of referring to and and connoting Fictional universes. The term "in-universe" is explained in WP:WAF in a way that completely contrasts it with the "Real World", which is a bit different from a source whose historical value is simply disputed or contradicted. I would suggest moving completely away from the "in-universe" series of templates. As I explained on the relevant TfD discussions, my belief here is that we shouldn't use any special Bible-specific template, simply one that references the policy problem involved. Even Template:BibleAsFact, which currently has the most support of all the disputed templates, suffers from the problem that at first glance it appears to be equivalent to a claim that the Bible is false. My suggestion here would be that any template should speak in positive language, what to do rather than what is wrong. One could say "Please attribute Biblical narratives to their source" or "Please add additional perspectives", for example, rather than, "Don't present the Bible as fact" etc. This would address the relevant policy issues (attribution and balance) without creating a template that claims or appears to claim that the Bible is false, and without describing it in language that WP:WAF says refers to fiction. Kiddush/Chillul H'

edit

Why are the concepts of Kiddush and Chillul Hashem not of Top importance in your mind? Are they of any less importance than the Rambam, the Kosel, Hillel HaZaken, or the Baal Shem Tov? I'd rather not get into an edit war with you, but the concepts of Kiddush and Chillul H' are among the most important in [[Judaism|Yidishkeit]. -- Avi (talk) 23:21, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

When I updated WP:JEW and WP:JH to use assessment templates in the first place, I thought I made those subtle changes, I guess not. Anyway, it's probably better to be in concert with all the other Wikiprojects, so I'll defer on these. Thanks. -- Avi (talk) 05:03, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Courtesy when nominating AFD and CFD

edit

Hi Eliyak: Wikipedia:Etiquette is important, as are as a number of key related Wikipedia expected behaviors and notions, especially if from time to time you nominate articles or categories for deletion. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion#How to list pages for deletion:

While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the articles that you are nominating for deletion. Also consider notifying WikiProjects listed on the discussion page. Do not notify bot accounts or people who have made only insignificant 'minor' edits. To find the main contributors, look in the page history or talk page of the article and/or use TDS' Article Contribution Counter. For your convenience, you may use {{subst:AFDWarningNew|Article title}} ~~~~ (for creators who are totally new users), {{subst:AFDWarning|Article title}} ~~~~ (for creators), or {{subst:Adw|Article title}} ~~~~ (for contributors or established users). You can determine the main contributors of the articles by entering the page name at Wikipedia Page History Statistics.

A contributor of your caliber should make it a point to abide by this courtesy as a matter of procedure so that editors who are not familiar with Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Judaism or other "Deletion sorting" notifications, can get a chance to be notified right away and fairly ON THEIR OWN USER TALK PAGES that their work is being nominated for deletion. No doubt you would appreciate it and expect it if it was your work that was being nominated for deletion ! ! ! I have notified User Nathan000000 (talk · contribs) [1] that you have nominated his Mardon stub for deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mardon by using the {{subst:AFDWarning|Article title}} ~~~~ (for creators) template. That's certainly the case for Category:Political parties in the United Kingdom, and in my mind is the most sensible way of categorising them - there's no harm in articles being in several different categories, and were it not for the main category, there would be no way of seeing which ones are currently extant. пﮟოьεԻ 57 14:54, 6 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Return Again

edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Return Again, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

The article is very poor and struggles to meet Wikipedia's requirements. Although I'm not an expert I doubt the song has any real notability and would only be interesting to a select group of people.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Speedy deletion nomination of Paskesz

edit

A tag has been placed on Paskesz requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for organizations and companies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. —ShadowRanger (talk|stalk) 22:17, 28 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Amongst Cannibals

edit

Hi Eliyak, It appears that you are responsible for the following sentence in the article about Carl Suphus Lumholtz the Author of "Amongst Cannibals" from 1888

"It should be pointed out that regardless of the title of the book, Queensland Aboriginals were not (and still are not) known to consume human flesh." I do understand and agree with your intention, but I think it is perhaps slightly overdone. Surely I do not think any culture on earthy universalle was in the habit of hunting for human flesh as a source of food. Which is not the same as saying that it never happened, indeed it happened in a murder case in Germany only a few years ago and there are evidence that it happened in China during the cultural revolution where people were starving. Lumholtz overdid this thing to boost the sale of his book.

However, what may be classified as ritual cannibalism, meaning consuming sections of a dead body, either as a mark of respect and grief or to appropriate the spiritual strength of a slain enemy, were widespread, and it its this that was misused to depict Aboriginal people as cannibals hunting for human flesh as a source of food. Yet we need to be careful here we assist no one in depicting contemporary white settler as complete fools. They were prejudiced and also what we have come to call racist (a word from 1930, not used previously) in the extreme, but there are countless reports of people actually eye-witnessing ritual cannibalism and this is where this exaggerated allegation originates.

I do not wish to correct in your sentence, but I would suggest that you reduced it to something like

"Queensland Aborigines were never known to hunt for human flesh as a source of food."

This is a correct sentence and you can then make a link and leave the general issue of cannibalism ritual or otherwise to a specialist article in its own right and someone who know more and are capable of explaining this in a correct, yet also culturally and politically sensitive manner. As it is now I would say you sentence is glaringly wrong and a bit too political correct to be of assistance to anyone. Ritual cannibalism were widespread, but it has been grossly misused to claim genuine cannibalism in a degrading manner, so as to make excuses for genocidal behaviour, dispossessing and murder people of another culture and skin colour.

I had to deal with the subject my self in a study which will later appear as a book - this section in the chapter I call 'THEIR ENEMIES’ STRENGTH ADDED TO THEIR OWN…' This in fact is a quote from James Morrill who had lived for seventeen years with the Bindals near present day Bowen. Morrill always strenuously denied that this tribe or any of their neighbours were ever engaged in eating the flesh of their enemies. Yet he spoke of a frequent practice of dissecting the bodies of slain enemies aimed at conquering and internalising the spiritual powers and to prevent the spiritual resurrection and multiplication of a slain enemy. The Bindals and their neighbours used to, he wrote,

…cut their enemies up in strips, dry them and distribute the pieces through the tribe, by which means they think they have their enemies’ strength added to their own, and that they will be lucky in hunting and fishing.

Morrill who lived seventeen years until 1862 or thereabout amongst others with the very tribe Lumholtz encounted 20th years later, and he was no a racist or classically prejudiced man. Indeed, he left no opportunity to defend his friends and there are evidence to suggest that this kid of thing he described happened in most Qld tribes also that they collected kidney and kidney fat from dead enemies exactly as described by Lumholtz. It was seemingly believed that a man's spiritual mana was connected to kidney's and you will find this mentioned throughout Australia.

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:22, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Succesion

edit

A tag has been placed on Template:Succesion requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is an unused duplicate of another template, or a hard-coded instance of another template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is not actually the same as the other template noted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page explaining how this one is different so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{substituted}}</noinclude>).

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page's talk page, where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Friendly note

edit

I'm sure you saw my revert of you removal of a kosher food category, but I thought I'd drop a note anyways. Categories are helpful for indexing and items in a reasonable way. The argument that "Kosher certification is widespread. By this logic, Coca Cola and Mars_(chocolate_bar) should be included too." is one that suggests valid and registered items are not suitable to be indexed by what they are. I can't think of a reason to not categorize something despite it being a valid entry in said catagory. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 05:46, 28 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Kash Jackson

edit

The article Kash Jackson has been proposed for deletion. The proposed deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Discretionary Sanctions Notification - American Politics

edit

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have recently shown interest in post-1932 politics of the United States and closely related people. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect: any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or any page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.
