Wellington meetup and new editor
editKia ora - sadly I missed the last meet-up but I am in need of a bit of local help as a new editor, with time and motivation on my hands before the next meet-up. I have started creating articles and wonder if I can get some guidance to ensure they will be ok, or even what to do. I had one rejected that I think I have fixed and resubmitted: Pacific Undergound. And a draft that I think is almost good to go: Pakoire/Te Ohu Whakaari. Do you know any experienced editors else I could reach out to for maybe a short sit down together / guided help? Black Lives Matter
editHi Einebillion, Thanks so much for your encouragement and support. I attended the Black Lives Matter rally in Auckland as an observer and someone who was shocked and outraged by what happened to George Floyd. I thought it would be good to put my interests and social science background to good use for Wikipedia. My main focus is New Zealand politics, government, and media. One of my pet projects including the Sixth Labour Government of New Zealand. It's to help maintain a record of policies and other developments for the sake of memory and history. Use of photographs
editI am writing an article about Jane Yandle a professional female taxidermist b.1843 in the UK d.1915 in NZ, some of whose taxidermied birds are displayed in the NZ Timber Museum in Putaruru. I contacted the Museum to ask if they had any photos of the displays free of copyright restrictions for possible use in the article. I received 10 photos taken by a volunteer at the Museum, and the accompanying email from the Museum Manager said I was free to use then as I like. My question is whether that email is sufficient permission to include a photo, one of which looks to be of an acceptable quality. Noracrentiss (talk) 07:31, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

How to cite documents held by Te Papa?
editI would like to cite a letter and other documents held by Te Papa as evidence that Jane Yandle (subject of an article I am drafting) made the items. The Catalogue details provided by Jennifer Twist Senior Curator at Te Papa are: 1) "CA000294/001/0001/0055; Kiwi Muff & Tippet; 21 September 1872; Yandle, Jane – receipt/account"; and 2) "MU000147/004/0054; Forwarding box containing the tippett and muff. Protecting kiwis from exploitation from fashion. Auckland Institute meetings.; 23 September 1872; Kirk, Thomas" Entering these references in the Search bar on the Te Papa website brings back a Zero result. I have to declare a conflict of interest here. I'm a Te Papa employee closely connected with the Te Papa team that includes Jennifer Twist, Archivist. I'm not sure whether you searched the Te Papa website or Te Papa's Collections Online website. If you searched Te Papa's website - you're unlikely to get a result. If you search Collections Online, there's a tip you need to know in order to find the record you are interested in. When searching using a collection item registration number, you need to put the search term in inverted commas. e.g. "CA000294/001/0001/0055"
If the archival item has been documented to the item level then the collection item record should appear.
CA000294/001/0001/0055 has the Collections Online link: https://collections.tepapa.govt.nz/object/1843367 - you can use this link to develop your citation. MU000147/004/0054 has not been published in Collections Online to the item level. Archives are ordered and described by a hierarchy - Series (in this case the MU000147), Box (in this case 004), and if the box has only a few items then item (as in this case 0054). Sometimes it goes Series, Box, Folder, Item... it depends on how much material is in the archive series. Because it's a hierarchy you can go up a level and see what's been published. I searched on "MU000147/004" and found that there were 10 items in that box that have been databased and published to Collections Online. If you require a link for the archival item you refer to to create your citation I recommend that you email Jennifer and request her to database that entry and publish the entry to Collections Online so that you can cite the Collections Online link. But you don't need a link to cite a physical archival item. I've been working on bringing on to enWS the s:Transactions and Proceedings of the New Zealand Institute—at least at the level of the table of contents. Copyright of book cover
editKia ora Einebillion! Hope all is well with you. I remember from May's meet-up that you've got expertise in the copyright area, and was wondering if you could assist with a question. Say a photographer takes a photo and then it's used on the cover of a book (with her permission). The publisher of the book owns the copyright of the cover image (incorporating the photo & design/text elements). Could the publisher then upload the cover image to Wikicommons under a free licence?
My instinct says no and that you would need the photographer to release the photo under a free licence herself (eg through publishing it on Wikicommons) before the cover image could then itself be uploaded. But I figure I should check with someone who has more actual knowledge than I do -- especially since if the answer is no I'm going to have to explain this to the publisher. :) Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 09:54, 10 July 2022 (UTC)
- You are correct. Think of copyright like an onion. The copyright in the photograph is the inner onion ring. The copyright holder has granted permission for that photograph to be copied into a book cover and for the publisher to add additional creativity to create a book cover. The additional creativity of the publisher adding text and formatting the image to create a cover is the outer layer of onion. But you can't put all of the onion into Wikimedia Commons without all onion rings being licensed to permit this type of copying and reuse. They don't own the copyright in the photograph - they are just licensed to use it for certain purposes which aren't likely to include an open resue licence. Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay
editThinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.
Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.
