Feeder peer review response
Hi!, thanks for the peer review for the above mentioned article. I have taken on board the references you have listed, and replaced them with something I beleive is more realiable, as well as deleting statements I cannot citiate with reliable sources. I have however kept a few in the article that you flagged up, with the reasons below :).
- http://web.archive.org/web/20071014071012/http://freespace.virgin.net/ali.bunny/feeder/faq.htm This source is used for The Waterboys, and is of FA class. The page however no longer exists, and so I used a web archiver to retrieve it.
- http://www.feederanorak.co.uk/FA_Home.htm This website is set up by someone who has regular contact with the bands record label, so the information here is very reliable.
- http://web.archive.org/web/20060530112915/www.feederweb.com/band/ This is actually a page that was on the bands official website, but no longer exists, I therefore used a web archiver.
- http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/index.htm The article Doolittle (album), uses this website as a source, and is also like The Waterboys article, of FA status.
Looking forward to your suggestions :), I will the more than happy to address the points you will have made if there are any problems :). Cheers! Marcus Bowen (talk) 10:17, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

- Hi, can you please look back at the FAC, and comment on the FAC as the RS issue is the only issue remaining that may not be satisfactorily answered as pointed by Sandy? Please comment on FAC if you are satisfied or not, be it an Oppose or Support, both are going to help the article improve and some day reach FA. Reliable source concern
Hey, at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Armageddon (2006) a user is saying that you agreed http://www.wrestleview.com/ fell under the bounds of our reliable source criteria, but he references your cheatsheet (which doesn't mention it.) Can you check it again? Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 21:41, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
- It's the third one under Wrestling (it's not a blue link, which probably threw you off). Not that I only consider it marginally reliable, so anything really contentious probably shouldn't be using it as a source. Ealdgyth - Talk 21:45, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Hi and thanks for your detailed peer review comments. I've gone through and tried to understand and address all of them, but I'm afraid I'm still a newbie when it comes to FAC, so I'm not clear on some of the sourcing concerns. I would really appreciate it if you could swing back by and take a look at my responses--I sense that some further clarifications would help get me working in the right direction. Thanks again! what do you think of the new links? Nergaal (talk) 23:05, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Robert of Jumièges
Boo! Another wicked archbishop. There is a rather nice image of his missal here. Since Wikimedia Commons have decided that "PD-Art" and "PD-Scan" are fine regardless of any copyright notices the Bibliotheque de Rouen may think to apply, I could PNGify this and upload it to Commons. But do you want a picture of the missal? I need hardly say that it's a great article, as usual. You'll catch Mike Christie yet. Angus McLellan (Talk) 23:25, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- The wicked archbishops are more fun though! He's really short, and I'm of two minds on the missal. He didn't comission it, he just looted it, so I'm kinda thinking I'd rather show shots of Jumieges, which he did at least start building. We could replace old Billy boy though, I guess. I've been through everything I own, and no a single doodle of him do I see. And thanks on the praise, he was kinda easy, since I just spent so much time on Stigand. I'm afraid that Nigel (Bishop of Ely) is probably next, and then I don't think I can ignore Wilfrid any more, much as I might like to. Ealdgyth - Talk 23:33, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- Anything in Commons:Category:Abbaye de Jumièges? But Wilfrid? When I'm feeling unsympathetic, my mental picture of Wilfrid is of Pope Alexander VI from the old BBC TV costume drama The Borgias. What about nice old Theodore of Tarsus instead? Everybody liked him. Angus McLellan (Talk) 23:55, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
- Everybody but Wilfrid (grins). Can't ignore the fact that Wilfrid's important. It's either him or one of Dunstan's cronies... eeww.. Ealdgyth - Talk 23:57, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Need a helpy helper
Nice new article out there called Ranch Sorting. I am in a discussion with the creating editor over if s/he needs to footnote every single sentence if it's to the same source. I also toned down a little of the Peacock wording. Was wondering if you'd like to take a peek over there on the talk page and discuss footnoting protocols because I don't want to be too harsh on the topic and WP:FOOT doesn't really offer any clear guidance. Montanabw(talk) 23:58, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
Follow up
I am the original author of Ranch Sorting and thought I would leave some additional comments here on why I use my unique style of footnoting.
I understand that Ranch Sorting is not a controversial subject nor is it a particularly complicated subject and that providing citations for every sentence is overkill for this article. However many of the articles that I have worked on have thirty or forty citations and I have found the procedure I use to be an invaluable aid to to keeping the citations straight as the articles evolve.
I specifically started using the process when I rewrote an article on US Senator Paul Coverdell that did not contain a single citation and I had to go in sentence by sentence and verify the facts in the article one by one, and then completely reorganize the article based on the new information added. The point I am making is that there are processes from engineering and programming that may be applicable to writing articles for wikipedia, and that it is good practice to follow the processes even when they aren't really required.
Citation Entropy
There are two specific problems I see time and again on wikipedia that the process addresses: A paragraph may be properly cited, then someone comes in and adds new material to the paragraph that is not supported by the citation or moves a sentence from a paragraph that has a citation to another part of the article. In the first case, someone should add a [citation needed] notation to the added material until a citation can be provided. In the second case, someone should replicate the citation and move it along with the sentence. Usually neither takes place and both these cases degrade the quality of the information in a wikipedia article.
Programming Inheritance
"Citation Entropy" is not an issue in written research. When an author writes an article for a book, it is acceptable to provide a single citation for a paragraph or an entire section since the written work is immutable. However, Wikipedia differs from the written work because the collections of facts are not immutable and that is why wikipedia needs a process that provides what programmers call Inheritance (computer science) to the programming primitives - in this case the "facts" in a wikipedia article.

Robert
Ok - I can cover the art ok, but if you can get access after your trip to Gem's collected papers a look at the indexes might clarify & give more material for the architecture side, which is more off my beat. Johnbod (talk) 23:53, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
- I have updated my FAC comment, as you will see. Spearhafoc could now usefully have a modified dump of the bit in Robert on the background to Robert's refusal to consecrate him. I presume this was all yours, so if you have the time it would be better if you could do it. I can add the refs below etc afterwards. The old rogue should at least have the posthumous satisfaction of beating Robert to the main page on DYK (but there is no rush for the background bit). Johnbod (talk) 21:45, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
Hey Ealdgyth

Lafayette
I replaced the reference that pointed to the Alumni magazine. I recast part of that section, as well, to provide a slightly fuller view of Lafayette's involvement with the societe des amis des noirs. Many of the cites you brought up I had left in because they had been added by editors who were helping early-on; and, the information was easily verifiable elsewehre. Anyway, I've applied your suggestions. Lazulilasher (talk) 16:00, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Hey Ealdgyth, I know you're traveling and have FAC sourcing checks to attend to, but if you have time, the List of Archbishops of Canterbury is at Featured List Review. You're the only person I know who is knowlegeable on the topic, so I decided to alert you. Cheers, Dabomb87 (talk) 03:23, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Edward the Martyr
Hello! Edward the Martyr is up for GA review and the reviewer isn't so happy. I will have a go at fixing it, but I am wondering if you still have access to the books on Dunstan, Oswald of Worcester and Æthelwold of Winchester? I may need some help. Cheers! Angus McLellan (Talk) 21:28, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- I have them... but they are (mostly) at home. I buy, not interlibrary loan, so most of what I use I still have. The problem is, I'm not at home and won't be for at least a week, if not a bit more. I can look in the car tomorrow night and see what's in the bags I brought with, but they were mainly to deal with Robert of Jumieges, not anything about Edward the Martyr. I'll see what I can dig up. Ealdgyth - Talk 21:39, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- Im not sure I can save it before it loses GA status, but I can probably bring it up to speed later. I have to admit that the sourcing is a bit... iffy. Several of the sites being used are ... not what I would call the best. I'd replace the following:
- If you're in a hurry, go with the ONDB, just to keep GA status, and to remove some of the more out there claims. Frankly, the article lacks a lot of background. Ealdgyth - Talk 21:50, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
- A check through my handwritten notes - forgot about them! - reveals that I am fairly well supplied with relevant ODNB stuff on the royals and magnates, a bit less so on the clerics. So I reckon I have enough material for a GA standard effort and in-depth stuff on the clerics can wait a while. Hope you're enjoying your travels. Angus McLellan (Talk) 22:21, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for commenting,
Netley Abbey at FAC
Hi Ealdgyth. I hope you got back safe from your journey. Your comments on Netley Abbey were very useful indeed: you gave me your thoughts on what to change and told me where, which meant I could fix the problems. More importantly, you told me why, so I don't make the same mistakes again. One thing I thought was particularly good was that you pointed out where something might not be clear to international readers. I know that I tend to write in a very formal UK academic style when writing about things like this so a heads up on that is cool. You said that you might be able to fix the link to the online version of the VCH in the Netley bibliography, I'd be very grateful if you could as I don't know how to do it.
If you get bored with Hereford and decide some time to do Peter des Roches I'd be happy to help as I have some good material on him, especially his foundation of religious houses and his dealings as a property shark. Soph (talk) 15:52, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Hey there! I know this is well outside the realm of what I usually ask for your help on, but I'm involved in a rather knotty GAR on Attachment therapy, which can be found at Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/Attachment therapy/1. A few weeks ago, I offered a second opinion on a GA review of the article, and after some work by the editor, passed the article. Immediately after passing it, another user posted a series of complaints, and then almost immediately listed the article at GAR. Some of his complaints were valid and work has been done on the article, but he still continues to complain about the article - the problem being that most of his complaints are fairly vague and unsubstantial. I still think the article is of GA status, but the main editor and I are looking to get some outside input to see if we're in the right or wrong. If you could take a look through this article, and some of the issues in the GAR (they're sort of summarized at the bottom, if you don't feel like reading through the whole thing), it would be fantastic. Also fantastic would be if you could bring in some of your other editing friends to comment. If not, then I understand completely...I know you're busy with everything else you do on WP. Thanks! HIW and US section
Added the sandbox at Horses_in_warfare#The_Americas. Tweak away. Based on what I think Gwinva was saying, the big deal about the Civil War is that cavalry was used a lot in a time when Europeans were using other types of units more. But the big thing was that I tried to keep it short, seeing as how there is a whole separate (largely unsourced) article on US Cavalry. Montanabw(talk) 06:50, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Horses
I used to own a very smart horse that was half Arabian, half Quarter horse. He was a gelding and had the high spiritedness of an Arabian with the dependability of a Quarter horse. He was a horse with a sense of humor and fun, neat mix. His name was Whiskey Sour (I didn't name him, breeder did). The more experienced wikipedia editors upload images over there so they can be used in any of the wiki projects, not just wikipedia. Also, Ealdgyth's "culls" are better than the "best shots" from most of the rest of us! LOL! And Ealdgyth, can you take lots of "culls" of Dressage stuff and anything else useful? Bankers at PR
Ealdgyth, Yohmom now has Banker Horse at Peer review and because apparently the entire class flooded PR with about 20 simultaneous requests, Ruhrfish asked if WikiProject Equine would help review this particular article. I am definitely COI on doing a neutral review, and you might also be (not sure, you more commented on the talk page) but FYI, I'm asking some of the other horse article editors if they'd like to take a look-see at the article and comment at the peer review page. If you want to comment at PR, you are the best there is, so if you don't think there is a COI go for it and thanks in advance. If you think you are COI, maybe ask some other good PR people you know to take a peek? Montanabw(talk) 20:12, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Early Christian martyrs in the Middle Ages
Hey, Ealdgyth. I'm Geuiwogbil. You might remember me from such articles as Diocletian and Maximian. (Goodness, those were a long time ago, weren't they?) I've been tweaking up our article on the Great Persecution recently, and have come across a problem I think you might be able to provide some basic help with. You see, the works I've read often allude to a sort-of medieval "dark ages" between the actual age of martyrdom and the glorious enlightenment that was Edward Gibbon, wherein many lies and half-truths were bandied about about the early martyrs, but they don't provide any details. Since you're some sort of medievalist, I thought you might be able to direct me to some relevant works on the topic, or to some fellow Wikipedian who might be able to do the same. I apologize if I've got you at a bad time, or if your relevant expertise doesn't extend that far. Thanks anyways! Geuiwogbil (Talk) 03:38, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not quite sure what you're wanting. The canonical author on late antiquity and Christianity is Peter Brown, he's done a lot of work on the desert monks and suchlike, although it's not really about the martyrs. I THINK what you're asking for is information on how the medieval people themselves saw the age of matyrs? Ealdgyth - Talk 03:52, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, that is what I'm looking for. Geuiwogbil (Talk) 03:56, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hm. Let me dig around a bit. It's not really a subject I studied much, but I'm pretty sure I have some stuff on it. Brown, who I mentioned above, would probably have information on the views of late antiquity (i.e. 400s to 600s). I'll check McMullen also, he's written about the time frame. The "dark ages" is going to be a bit more difficult. Ealdgyth - Talk 04:00, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks! I'll be checking out for the night now. I'll look into Peter Brown in the interim. I apparently have access to the The Cult of the Saints as an e-book, so I'll flip through that. Anything else by Brown I should read? Geuiwogbil (Talk) 04:14, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- Back when I was in college, The World of Late Antiquity was used as a textbook. It might be a bit dated, but would be an excellent overview. Ealdgyth - Talk 04:24, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Is it possible to leave comments about the sourcing at the above Peer review for Over the Edge (1999), which I plan to nominate for FAC? Thank you.--TRUCO 16:22, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
Dear Ealdgyth, Sandy left a message for me on my talk page suggesting perhaps directly involving just those editors who offered to help instead of doing another peer review. At your convenience, please feel free to post any suggestions on the RCC talk page or just be bold and make some edits. I will go through and make sure any rewordings still match the sources. JB Murray, Awadewit and Marskell also offered to help so this message is going on their page too. There is really no hurry here so please - stop by at your convenience. FYI, Oppose summaries are at 2 and User:Marskell/RCC. Thanks. NancyHeise talk 19:51, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

I was wondering what Edith of East Anglia should be called, and not getting anywhere. Do you have any ideas? We can't call her Ealdgyth(?) can we? FLC refs / links to probable copyvio videos question
Hi Ealdgyth, could you take a look at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Mark of the Year please? The article Mark of the Year links to a bunch of videos of the marks (spectacular catches in Australian Football League games) that are on YouTube and seem to be likely copyvios (there is no indication that the uploaders have permission to do so, or are the original creators). The video links are used to illustrate (like ELs) but are in the list table like refs. My opinion is that we should not link to copyvios in any case, but I am not an expert, so any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:13, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- The relevant guideline is WP:C where the policy is that we do not link to sites that are violating copyright. Period. The only exception is if the article is about a website, and there might be copyright violations somewhere on the site, but this doesn't apply. So, all other concerns are moot, and they should not be linked to unless they have permission. I've stopped working on FLCs because of lack of time, hope this helps! Ealdgyth - Talk 01:17, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, that is exactly what I was lookinmg for. I do not normally participate in FLC either, but I peer reviewed the article and was asked to weigh in on the FLC. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:57, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

- Still need a page number on the Groening ref. Ealdgyth - Talk 16:46, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- That's actually not a book. According to Gran2 (the user that added it), "It's sort of hard to define. It's basically a "making-of" DVD which was being given away in The Sun. Looking at the back of the case, aside from the basic Fox copyright, The Sun is the only company listed. Although, of course, they are both out by Rupert Murdoch." I added "distributed by" to the ref to take away some of the confusion. -- Scorpion0422 16:53, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- If it's a DVD, probably best to use cite dvd or cite episode or something similar. Ealdgyth - Talk 16:59, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

- No worries. Neither Sandy nor Raul will do a speedy "no promote" unless there are calls for that on the FAC page, which isn't the case in this FAC. I always watch FACs I've commented on and will strike/reply as I have time. Ealdgyth - Talk 22:11, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
Question on sources
Generally YouTube is obviously not a good source for citing things. I was wondering however if you would consider a partner video to meet the criteria. Say for example, this interview with Patrick Stewart (first thing I could find) is from the BBC and is published by BBC Worldwide. It's from an actual program, but would youtube be able to serve as a convenience link? Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 16:16, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
- the main concern I'd have is possibly linking to a copyright violation. If it's to the actual BBC feed on YouTube, it'd be fine as a convience link. The real problem with YouTube is two fold - linking to copyright violations, and the fact that the people who upload them may not be reliable. The second one can be got around by using BBC authored stuff and the first would be solved by the same method. Ealdgyth - Talk 16:22, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
I think all your objections have been dealt with now - could you take another look? Richerman (talk) 18:09, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Thought you might be interested to know that it snowed in Houston (and at least as far south as Lake Jackson) yesterday. - When I was 17, it snowed in Jacksonville, FL. Half an inch and the temperature dropped to 25, degrees, creating ice on the roads. I was working at a restaurant off I-95, and we were packed because traffic was moving 2 miles an hour. Jacksonville is crisscrossed with 7 bridges crossing the St. Johns River and 3 more going across the Intracoastal Waterway. One bridge in the city was open. They opened another to truck sand in from the beach to cover the roads and closed it again. Havoc in the city. It was great. --Moni3 (talk) 19:21, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Skulking around
I needed some escape from the work situation in our fine state, so I have been poking around here again. Mostly just process stuff with the projects. I am trying to avoid the frustration that heavy editing can cause at first.
For work, I personally oversaw the 13 most southern counties (out of an office in Marion) in Illinois for the last 3 months of the election, so I have my downstate chops down now. Glad to see you are still here and you are still active.
Let me know if there is any English Church, Crusade, or Middle ages stuff in general brewing that I might be able to help with. I refocused my efforts and edited my user boxes to relect this. I was working on quite a few projects that didn't even intrest me that much before I took my Wikibreak. No wonder it took so long to get back. Your comments in FAC Review of Jagdgeschwader 1 (World War II)

I have responded to your comments regarding the sources for a FAC nomination for this article. You may find the review here. Could you please take a look and let me know if that was satisfactory ? Thanks Perseus71 (talk) 17:48, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
Is this source reliable?
Is this source (nintendoworldreport.com) reliable? I noticed that it was accepted at this FAC. They have a staff, with editors, etc., and here is their "About" page which states "The experienced Nintendo World Report staff members have written for many publications, including N64HQ, 64 Source, NintendoNation, Next-Generation Magazine, Nintendo Gamer Australia, America Online, Fusion's Intelligent Gamer, Prima's N64 Guide, AOL Critics Choice, GamePro, and many others. We have been also been featured in major publications such as USA Today, MSNBC, CNN, CNN Asia, Famitsu, 64 Dream, and BBC Online." etc. Gary King (talk) 16:48, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- Now, I'd probably question it. I think that was one of my first source reviews, back in March, and there is a lot I've learned about websites, etc. I'd like to see indepentant statements that the authors have written for those publications, not just from the NWR's site. Ealdgyth - Talk 16:53, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Ealdgyth...long time no talk. A quick question regarding some GA reviews that I'm doing, and just for my general knowledge. I know in the past I've seen you comment against using encyclopedias (MSN Encarta, Brittanica, etc) as sources. Is this a personal opinion, an unwritten rule, or policy someplace? I've got one current GA review and one review that I'm considering doing that use these two encyclopedias as sources, and I'd like to clarify the situation, at least in my own mind. Thanks! Dana boomer (talk) 16:53, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
- It's a judgement call thing. Specialist encyclopedias (such as the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, or similar) are usually better to use than generalist encyclopedias. I don't usually object to using Encarta, Britannica for something simple, such as entymology, basic fact unrelated to the subejct of the article, etc, but leaning too much on it is a sign of concern. It's just "odd" to be using a generalist encyclopedia such as Encarta as a source for a generalist encyclopedia (such as Wikipedia). It's more an unwritten rule, partly backed up by the whole primary/secondary/tertiary source thing. Generalist encyclopedia's are tertiary sources, so they are depreciated as sources for Wikipedia. Specialist encyclopedias often fall into the secondary source category (especially when they are written by experts in the field and attributed, such as the ONDB). Does that make sense? Ealdgyth - Talk 17:09, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
- Yup, makes sense, and thanks for the quick response. Dana boomer (talk) 17:36, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
Happy New Year!
Thanks again Ealdgyth for all off your hard work at FAC. Here is some fuel from my tree to keep you firing in the new year! YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 03:50, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
Re: Payment
I'd be happy to lend whatever skills I have to the task. And just wait, I'm backing off of video game articles for now, and soon you'll have sweat through Star Trek. Oh, and possibly some more dead white guys, but that's not until the end of 2009 :P Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 19:12, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
- Heh. I did read the Cope Sci-Fi book last fall, finally. Star Trek's fine, my mother and father were trekkies back in the original series through DS9. (I'm just a sci-fi fan, never was a trekkie per se. I'd rather see Honor Harrington done right on the big screen, but better Star Trek than Star Wars. (shudders)). Nigel (Bishop of Ely) should be ready pretty soon, I've got two more books due in to hopefully finish him up, and then it'll be polish/polish/polish time. Ealdgyth - Talk 19:16, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

I want to thank you for any comments you left during Lockdown (2008)'s FAC review. They helped to promote the article.--WillC 02:33, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
Coenred
Ealdgyth, is there any chance I can beg a favour? Tony is asking me to get another copyeditor for Coenred of Mercia, which is at FAC. He's actually been through more than half the article now, so it mostly needs focus at the end. If you have time to give it a look, I would appreciate it. If not, no problem. Thanks -- Mike Christie (talk) 21:30, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
- Heh. Tony's level of CE is beyond me. I'll try to look at it tonight, but I doubt I'll be able to help more than I hurt. Ealdgyth - Talk 21:34, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
- Don't worry about it -- I've asked qp10qp; with luck he'll have a little time to spare for it. Your notes on Nigel are interesting. Several of the relationships are dubious, so I think I'll put question marks on the relevant lines and see how that looks, and I'll put a question mark for the unknown parents of brothers. How do you want me to handle William of Ely? I could leave him off completely, or put him on, disconnected, with a note saying "known to be related", or you could mention him in the caption. I think the caption's probably the best choice, but it's your call.
- Are you interested in collaborating on an article at some point? I haven't done much collaborating, but our interests seem to overlap and I wondered if it would be fun to try it. Perhaps Bede, or one of the other major clerics -- Alcuin, or Boniface? Or a saint such as Guthlac? Or one of the sainted kings? I don't have much in the way of specifically religious sources; my stuff is all pure Anglo-Saxon history, but there's quite a bit there that would be useful. Bede is probably the most important one we could work on, but the sources might drown us. Anyway, let me know what you think. Mike Christie (talk) 19:17, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
- I've been thinking that Bede needs some serious work. Until I dug into Wilifrid, I didn't realise that he'd been accused of heresy, and had to answer to the charge to his diocesan bishop, who was Wilfrid... THAT must have been fun. Alucin needs work also, but I do think Bede would be one of those things that we should be working on. I know I have been collecting some of the stuff ... just haven't dared to wade into it yet.
- For William of Ely, just leave him off and I'll explain in a footnote/caption whatever. Keep in mind I'm not primarly an A-S person, I prefer the Norman period and to a lesser degree, the Angevin. I really need to work on the Norman kings, their articles ... suck. Another possibility would be Edward the Confessor, he's quite the controversial figure. Ealdgyth - Talk 19:22, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

- OK on William. For the articles, if you get into anything you think would be fun to collaborate on, let me know. My own reading stops at 850, though I'm thinking of digging into the Viking era, so I might get to Edward the Confessor one day. Mike Christie (talk) 19:46, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
- I'll start gathering information on Bede. Just perused the Royal Historical Society bibliography on him... the first 300 entries. (gulp). Will put something up so we can start gathering. And the Vikings are fun! Ealdgyth - Talk 20:05, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

- Ouch. That is quite a list. Is that everything you found, or just a start? I have An English Empire, by Higham; I've only read parts of it but my recollection is that is that it's more an "Age of Bede" book than a book about Bede. I wonder if it would be best to start by picking two or three central books on Bede himself. We could structure the article with reference to those, and then use the other sources to identify additional material. Mike Christie (talk) 11:36, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- That wasn't quite everything on the RHS bibliography, but it was everythign that looked like it might be useful and in English and was recent. I went ahead and ordered Bede, the Venerable (Twayne's English Authors Series), The Medieval Theologians: An Introduction to Theology in the Medieval Period (The Great Theologians), A Companion to Bede: A Reader's Commentary on the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, Conversion And Colonization in Anglo-Saxon England (Medieval and Renaissance Texts and Studies; Essays in Anglo-Saxon Studies), and The Venerable Bede (Outstanding Christian Thinkers). I already have The Age of Bede as well as Price's translation of Bede's History. I have a few of the articles, and can pick up a few more pretty soon. Ealdgyth - Talk 15:14, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- That's quite a list. I'm happy to order two or three myself, so that you don't have to do all the reading. I don't have a good basis for figuring out which ones are the most useful. If you know or suspect which other ones would be useful, let me know; otherwise I'll see what I can find second hand and will probably start just by buying the cheapest ones off that list. I'd love to get "Ideal and reality in Frankish and Anglo-Saxon Society" as that Wormald essay gets cited a lot, but I don't want to pay $150. (One seller is asking $980, so maybe $150 is a bargain!) Mike Christie (talk) 18:15, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- I think I already got most of the "cheap" stuff too. What I plan to do on the expensive stuff is go to the University of Illinois library next week and abuse their photocopier, so let me know if you want copies of things. I'll probably make one copy of whatever articles I can find, then can make a copy at home from my copy for you. Anything in electronic databases, I can just email. Probably the Bede the Educator would be the one that jumps at me that would be most useful that isn't bought. Or (Re-)reading Bede : the ecclesiastical history in context. Ealdgyth - Talk 19:38, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- Well, let me know what I can do to help with the reading. Is it OK if I edit the list a bit? I'd like to colour highlight the "ORDERED" and maybe add a note or two as we go through them. Mike Christie (talk) 04:20, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
- Feel free to edit away. I looked at the article tonight, I'm going to probably go through and nix some sources and cut some cruft. Yikes, I can't believe it's a GA! Ealdgyth - Talk 04:22, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Maybe you want to drop a note on the article talk page or on their talk page? Dana boomer (talk) 15:57, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hey, fellow Wikier. Actually, no, I wasn't aware that I'd 3-reverted. I somehow thought that that only applied to the particular edit, but you're saying it's actually the article? Oh, well, c'est la guerre. Anyway, you guys are wrong. I answered fully on the article talk page, and we should hash this out there, I think. --Milkbreath (talk) 17:11, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Re:DYK
You go to T:TDYK, look up the criteria (yours passes), find an interesting "hook", and paste this (completed) into the top of the section for the day in which you expanded the article:

Which would be January 6, here. I'm out and about just now (hence the sockpuppet), but I can nominate a hook if you'd like when I get time later today or tomorrow. All the best, Deacon's sockpuppet (talk) 20:52, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Absence
No problem; I don't expect Bede to be a quick process. I was delighted to see Angus chip in at the books list page; the more the merrier for a big article like this. I would expect we'll end up cutting quite a bit to ship out to sub-articles--there's a sub-article to be written just about the manuscript history of Historia Ecclesiastica, for example. I plan to keep working on other articles at the same time. If we get Bede into shape for a peer review in under two months I think we'll be doing very well, so there's no hurry. With luck we'll attract other contributors of the quality of Angus. I did mention it to qp10qp, and he said he was too busy to help but promised a detailed peer review when we're ready. Mike Christie (talk) 19:07, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
- Well, I did a quick clean up on what's there now, so it's not so scary. I agree that this is going to be a huge undertaking, but probably well worth it for both our sakes in the end. I'm taking the day off of serious wiki work today, and plan to get back into the swing when I get back. Probably hit the U of I for journal articles, so if there is anything you want on other subjects, let me know here and I'll try to look for them for you. Ealdgyth - Talk 19:09, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Making plans for Nigel
On Nigel, I fixed a couple of obvious errors and added a link, but most of what I saw was copyediting, and you said you're going to do some more work so I left that. If you tell me when you're done I'd be glad to do a peer review/copyedit for you, so long as you don't mind the fact that I am ignorant about Anglo-Norman history.
I do have a couple of points I thought I'd raise that came up when I read them; just input for your next pass.
- I'm not sure what "liberty" as a "corporate body" the monks wanted; what does that mean?
- You mention a couple of medieval sources such as William of Malmesbury; is a short paragraph on sources warranted? (I'm not sure, myself; as a reader of history I am always interested in the sources, but I don't think every reader wants this. On the early A-S stuff I do it's often necessary because the sources are so thin. Up to you.)
It looks complete, as far as I can tell, and the sequence seems right. Good narrative throughout; it reads naturally with the reader being pulled from one event to the next through Nigel's life. Very interesting. Let me know when you're ready for me to get out a blue pencil and I'll have another go at it. Mike Christie (talk) 02:47, 12 January 2009 (UTC)
- I'm running into a bit of technical trouble with Nigel's tree, so I haven't managed to get to any editing tonight. Will look at your Bede edits and hope to get to that and the tree tomorrow. Mike Christie (talk) 04:00, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- No worries, I just added the Liber Eliensis bits and will try to work on the "liberty" issue tomorrow. I'm still undecided on the sources, but leaning towards no, as I don't really have a nice secondary source discussing how the various sources relate specifically to Nigel, and there are a lot of sources possible. One thing I like about Anglo-Norman history is that there are a good number of chronicles, plus lots of charters and other sources of information, so covering all the possible sourcs is kinda difficult and might take up too much space. Ealdgyth - Talk 04:07, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- Fair enough on the sources. Take a look at this and see what you think of the layout. I eventually decided not to add Alexander's niece and nephew as it is hard to make it clear what the relationship is. If you want them in, I think what I'd do is give Alexander a sibling to his left, named "?", and make them children of that. The niece's name would be "?" and I'd show her son Robert de Alvers directly below her without trying to indicate the father. Let me know if you want me to do that, or if there are any mistakes or any changes you'd like. Mike Christie (talk) 11:14, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Okay, I think it's ready for a hellacious CE. Anytime you feel up to it. I think I got most of the duplicate wikilinks, etc. Anything you can think of to add to the lead would be good too. Otherwise, I think he's pretty much done on the research end, just the polishing. Ealdgyth - Talk 16:07, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- I'll have a go at it soon. I will probably do Bede first, since then you can have a look at what I've done while I look at Nigel. If I don't get anything done by Thursday afternoon there's a good chance I won't get to anything till Monday, since I am travelling. I will try to start on Bede tonight -- have to go do a chore or two first. Mike Christie (talk) 00:06, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
- I reworked the first paragraph of Bede; took me over an hour. I guess I never realized before how slow an editor I am; I haven't really collaborated with someone else before so I've never thought about the time it takes me. Anyway, I hope you can live with me being slow. Some of that was note-making prior to editing, so that won't be wasted. I will try to get through more tomorrow night. Oh, and I tweaked the pic of Nigel's tree a bit -- it was bugging me that Roger le Poer was on a different level of the tree, so I moved him down to line up with his brother and cousins. - I'm not at all bothered by your speed. I generally keep three or four articles in my "work bin" so at the moment, Bede's over in your sandbox, and I'm fiddling with Nigel and poor Ealdred (archbishop) is being expanded, while I'm keeping up with the usual stuff elsewhere. I don't figure to look at Bede for a bit until after you've polished my stinky prose and added what you can find, so take your time. We've got until May 26!
