Thank you for standing for arbitrator. I am far away from it all (travel, mourning), not in the mood, so just an informal question you can answer or ignore:

What does this 2024 DYK tell you about infoboxes for classical composers in 2024? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:19, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Gerda Arendt Hi Gerda, sorry to hear about rough times for you; I hope the sun shines again on you soon. As to your question, we've talked about infoboxes before. I still stand by my 2022 response about the infobox wars. The interesting thing I note from that DYK is that all of the articles have an infobox, except for Mahler's, but Mahler is the only FA. Of course, Mahler is a 2010 vintage FA, from an era before the ubiquity of infoboxes. What does that tell me? I guess from this small sampling, it might be evidence that infoboxes have won the war on infoboxes. Much as drugs seem to have won the war on drugs, or poverty has won the war on poverty.... Perhaps turn your attention to the talk pages, and tell me if you believe that the topic should still be treated as "contentious". (I asked in 2018, that's right.) -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 01:24, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Gerda Arendt Thank you for the direction :) Most of the articles don't have an issue. But I do admit some surprise at seeing just how recent and voluminous the infobox argument on Mahler's page is. However, from this small sampling, I'm not sure I could say authoritatively that infoboxes remain a problem. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 01:36, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
You might try the strength of arguments, how is that? I wanted to keep it simple, but if you don't see enough for Mahler try Mozart. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:14, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

story · music · places
November was rich in sadness and happiness for me, expressed in music. Regarding my question, I found one so far who looked into the matter and didn't stay at the surface, Simonm223. There are two composers on the Main page today, Siegfried Thiele and Aaron Copland. I find the response of my friend Jerome Kohl to a question on Copland's article talk promising. What do you think? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:58, 2 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Today's story comes from a DYK about a concert that fascinated me, and you can listen! For my taste, the hook has too little music - I miss the unusual scoring and a specific dedication - but it comes instead with a name good for viewcount. I'd still like to know what you think about the Copland posts. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:53, 6 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Today: listen to Sequenza XIV. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:27, 7 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
On the Main page today Jean Sibelius on his birthday. Listening to Beethoven's Fifth from the opening of Notre-Dame de Paris. We sang in choirs today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:44, 8 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Listen today to the (new) Perplexities after Escher. - Congratulations to being elected! Could you look at Samuel Barber and tell me if you miss something in his infobox? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:30, 12 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Listen today to Beethoven's 3rd cello sonata, on his birthday - it was a hook in the 2020 DYK set when his 250th birthday was remembered. I picked a recording with Antônio Meneses, because he was on my sad list this year, and I was in Brazil (see places), and I love his playing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:12, 16 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
I come to fix the cellist's name, with a 10-years-old DYK and new pics - look for red birds --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:02, 18 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Lincoln's assassination

edit

Captain Eek, I like your addition of "dying the next day" in "Lincoln lived to see this victory but was shot by an assassin on April 14, dying the next day." But I like it because it informs readers that he died the next day, not for the reason you gave, which is "Just saying that he was shot isn't enough, we need to specify that he died. You can survive being shot." This is because the fact that he died was stated before you added "dying the next day." It was stated because the sentence says that he was "shot by an assassin." Had Lincoln survived, Booth would have been merely an attempted assassin. Please don't take this comment too seriously; I'm just having fun. Maurice Magnus (talk) 03:17, 1 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Loracnedwab (04:59, 1 December 2024)

edit

Hi Capt. I do genealogy. I have in my maternal side, Martha Augusta McLane b 28 Sept 1848 in Marion. married in Marion, 5 June 1865, Joseph B. Hall, my great-grandmother's 1st husband. I tried CoPilot and couldn't locate anything other than her birthdate and marriage date. Could you find her death date and place? --Loracnedwab (talk) 04:59, 1 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Loracnedwab Hi. This is Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. We're not Google, and we're not a research service. I do believe there are some excellent genealogy sites out there like ancestry.com that could be more useful. If you're interested in editing Wikipedia, I've left a message on your talk page :) CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 20:26, 1 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

IPs continued to disrupt...

edit

Hello Captain, Please look after the history of Jared Lorenzo, some IPs are editing continuously and reverting every edit done by other users.
And congratulation on holding the haul to serve the sea for another two-year term as a Captain.––kemel49(connect)(contri) 20:04, 11 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

@KEmel49 I'm seeing very little action on that page this year. The latest IP edits are a month old. I'm not sure there's enough disruption to justify protection. And thanks for the congratulations :) CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 02:24, 12 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
