Flood

Hi Boomur – about four years ago I helped you with some UK articles and reviews to get this They Might Be Giants album up to GA, and I've had it on my watchlist ever since. An IP has now changed the recording dates in the infobox – I have no way of checking these dates, but I guess you do, so would you like to have a look and make sure that they are actually making a positive correction, and not just messing around? @Richard3120: Hi, thanks for the note! Hard to believe that was 4 years ago now. I did some digging and found that these specific dates were initially added in 2017 by an anonymous user with no citation (or edit summary). Prior to this we just had 1989 as the recording date. I also found that this Rolling Stone feature (cited extensively in the article) lists that Flood was recorded in the "fall of 1989", which is consistent with the June to October range but not October 1988 to June (which also seems too close on the heels of Lincoln). I'm curious where the June to October range came from since it seems plausible, so I'll do some more searching for specific dates but for now I'm going to switch to "Fall 1989". Some interesting (but ultimately fruitless) tidbits from the Flood book: Susan Drew from Elektra approached the band in 1989 (p. 23), which I think is a good indication that recording wouldn't have started until 1989. The book also makes a point of noting that between December 1984 and June 1989, the band was playing shows at least once a month (p. 20). I checked this against the TMBW show log of 1989 (which may well have been where the authors sourced this statement) which shows only one show between June 30 and October 28 1989; this would make sense if they were mainly recording during this time period. So there are some signs pointing in the June to October direction, but nothing solid enough to warrant inclusion in the article. Boomur 16:33, 4 June 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, based on their typical recording schedules for albums, it seems unlikely they spent nine months on a record... it's not like they were a stadium rock band, re-recording overdubs over and over again. And as it was their major label debut, why would Elektra have sat on the record for six months before releasing it? So three months in late 1989 sounds more likely to me.
