Racecar drivers from state

edit

If you are going to create a series of categories, it is best to populate them with a few entries so that they do not get nominated for speedy deletion as empty. Best approach is to find someone for each category and then create it. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:16, 1 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Order of categories

edit

Hi BizarreLoveTriangle. In case you weren't aware, there's no requirement for an article's categories to be in alphabetical order; in fact it's usually preferable for them to be in a "logical" order (i.e. related categories together). See Wikipedia:Categories#Categorizing_pages for further information. Regards. DH85868993 (talk) 04:38, 23 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

JR Motorsports cat

edit

Hi there! Thanks for your work on the racing articles, it's always good to see somebody else interested in them. :) Do have a question though, regarding Category:JR Motorsports drivers - wouldn't this work better as a list in JR Motorsports? Just curious. - The Bushranger One ping only 00:02, 5 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hey, thanks. Personally, I think it works fine as a subcategory; along with the rest of the team driver subcategories in Category:NASCAR drivers. :)
Well, there certainly are enough entries in it. :) - The Bushranger One ping only 02:31, 5 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

edit

Just thought I'd drop a note - articles already categorised in "racecar drivers of (state)" don't need Category:American racecar drivers added, as the by-state categories are subcats of it. :) - The Bushranger One ping only 04:31, 16 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Writers

edit

Hey - I see you added a "Writers" category to Rick Santorum. I'm not sure this is wise - the category ceases to be useful if it includes every politician who had a ghostwritten book about his politics published under his name. (This isn't an aspersion on Santorum specifically - one simply assumes these things for politicians' books.) What do you think? –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 20:47, 20 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'm not aware of whether or not Santorum's books are ghostwritten, but I noticed he does have multiple books published under his name, which I believe would classify him as a 21st-century American writer, in addition to the American political writers and Writers from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania categories that were already there. Anyways, the main idea I had in mind was populating Category:21st-century American writers. I have also added the category to the articles of other politicians such as Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, in addition to Bill O'Reilly (political commentator), who has had ten books published, and Madonna (entertainer), a songwriter and author of other books, among others. –BizarreLoveTriangle (talkcontribs) 01:30, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure the previously-there writers category belonged either. (I also figured you'd added the 21st-century one elsewhere, it just happens that Santorum's page is on my watchlist of old.) Basically I'm not sure how helpful the category is to readers or editors if it isn't more focused on people who are notable for their writing, if that makes sense? –Roscelese (talkcontribs) 05:18, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
I definitely believe more notable writers need to be added to the category if it's going to be relevant. Whether or not politicians such as Obama, Clinton or Santorum should remain there, that's up for the Wikipedia community to decide I suppose. I personally believe that if you've written a book, you would belong in the category of a writer, but I can't speak for everyone. :) –BizarreLoveTriangle (talkcontribs) 08:10, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
What's your rationale for Kurt Cobain? There is a book under his name but it is his posthumously published journals. I'd agree with Roscelese regarding who should be in the list -- currently it's made up of a list of those who aren't notable for their writing but rather for other activities. I'll take a look at it later and see if I can start filling in some more notable American writers (Faulkner, Hemingway, Shirley Jackson, Vonnegut, Heller, Plath, Bobbie Mason off the top of my head). L.cash.m (talk) 13:32, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Aside from his journals, Kurt was a songwriter, and a prominent one at that. The way I look at it, there are many biography articles that could fall under Category:20th-century writers and Category:21st-century writers as well as their subcategories, with many different writers by format to choose from. Most, if not all the individuals I added the American categories to, had other writing categories before. In Kurt's case, Category:American diarists and Category:Writers from Seattle, Washington, to name a few, have already been on his page for a good while now. –BizarreLoveTriangle (talkcontribs) 01:01, 22 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Empty categories

edit

Please don't blank categories and then add them to the categories-for-deletion category when you find empty categories; it doesn't work that way. What you do instead is leave any content and tag them with {{db-c1}}. Also, if you need to have category names changed, you should use WP:CFDS or WP:CFD (depending on the complexity of the change), manually creating a new category, moving the articles, and deleting the old category is frowned upon. - The Bushranger One ping only 10:05, 11 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi BLT, thank you for your contributions. Generally we add the most specific categories we can on an article. In this change, there is both US gay writers and US LGBT writers. LGBT is the parent category of gay (the 'G' in 'LGBT') - not both are needed. Thanks Span (talk) 10:34, 5 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Category:Gay writers is the subcategory for LGBT writers who are gay men, regardless of nationality, while Category:LGBT writers from the United States is simply for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender writers from the U.S. Category:American LGBT novelists is said to be for American novelists who have written LGBT-themed novels, regardless of their sexual orientation. Australian racing drivers

edit

If the state a racing driver comes from isn't a defining characteristic (there is no state-vs-state motor racing competition and many national/international competitors have not competed in state championship racing) why are they being subdivided that way? --Falcadore (talk) 10:51, 5 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I created Category:Racing drivers by state or territory in Australia a long time ago without thinking of removing Category:Australian racing drivers from any drivers' pages, but after looking at the diffuse template, it just seemed to make sense for the pages to be in the appropriate subcategories only. Maybe not, I dunno now. BizarreLoveTriangle (talk) 11:11, 5 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

As a member of the LGBT community, I did not mean to offend by adding Category:Child abuse resulting in death to Death of Leelah Alcorn. In case you haven't noticed, there is an ongoing debate whether Leelah's parents contributed to her suicide by refusing to accept her gender identity and forcing her to attend conversion therapy. Just two months ago, Leelah asked the Reddit community whether her parents were abusing her.[1][2] Furthermore, various bloggers and activists have called out her parents for "child abuse." Bots

edit

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Proposed deletion of Lucas Overby

edit

The article Lucas Overby has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Does not appear to meet WP:POLITICIAN. Failed two-time candidate. The coverage listed here is a 4-sentence article in a paper local to where he was running; the C-SPAN link is just recording of a debate that included all the candidates in the election, rather than something that focuses on him.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Proposed deletion of Get the Hell Outta Oz Tour

The article Get the Hell Outta Oz Tour has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication of notability - or even existence, really. The one source cited doesn't mention this supposed tour, and searching "get the hell outta Oz" produces no reliable results, not even trivial mentions.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Candlebox concert tours

edit

A tag has been placed on Category:Candlebox concert tours requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Trapt concert tours

edit

A tag has been placed on Category:Trapt concert tours indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 00:15, 12 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
