French IPA

edit

Hi, thank you for adding IPA transcriptions! Although I appreciate them, I thought I'd let you know that we use ⟨⟩ only for liaison, i.e. when a consonant arises only when prevocalic, not for mere enchaînement. I also found some instances of your transcriptions in which the Greek epsilon ⟨ε⟩ was used in place of the correct IPA letter, the Latin epsilon ⟨ɛ⟩. (Editors here also tend to prefer ⟨ɡ⟩ instead of the ASCII ⟨g⟩ and transcribe e muet as ⟨(ə)⟩ and orthographic è as ⟨ɛː⟩, but these are even more minor quibbles and you may see lots of transcriptions that contradict these conventions.) That said, I appreciate your contributions and I hope you'll stick around here. If you have any questions about the way we transcribe French in IPA, visit Help talk:IPA/French. Happy editing! Nardog (talk) 11:20, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Nardog: Hi, I use ⟨⟩ for enchaînement because of its usage in French Wiktionary, just like this, this, this and so on. And, what should I use for enchaînement if I stop using ⟨⟩? In my memory, I did't use the Greek epsilon ⟨ε⟩. Can you please give me some examples? Finally thanks for your reminder. --Bigbullfrog1996 (talk) 10:11, 23 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Just use a space. See this, this, or this for examples. As for the Greek epsilon, you had it on Luzech, Leers, and Brennilis, but I've fixed them so you don't need to worry about it. Nardog (talk) 03:59, 24 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Nardog: Ok, I will use a space instead of ⟨⟩ for enchaînement. As for the examples of Greek epsilon ⟨ε⟩ , I found that I copied them from French articles, I will pay attention from now on. Finally thanks for your reply. --Bigbullfrog1996 (talk) 08:25, 25 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

IPA

edit

Hello,

Please take note of my edit at Deutschlandsberg. I formatted the transcription in order to match Help:IPA/Standard German, which is one of the many language-specific reference pages for IPA transcriptions on the English Wikipedia. Make sure whenever you add one it is backed up by the help page it is linked to (if there is one, as is the case for {{IPA-de}}). And mind the stress mark too! ;)

French communes by department templates

edit

Hi, I see you modified some of the Category:France commune (country subdivision) templates to show the prefecture and subprefectures separately. I think it looks better (takes up less space) if we list these along with the other communes, and maybe highlight them, or add a note. See {{Ain communes}} for instance. Hello, Bigbullfrog1996,

Category redirects are not created like article redirects. Please look at the code/template on this page and use this as an example if you want to make category redirects in the future. If you just use the standard code like for article redirects, then the category appears on the Empty Categories list and will likely get tagged for deletion. edit

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give a page a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Rhisnes. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. Liz Read!   Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that one or more recent edit(s) you made did not have an edit summary. You can use the edit summary field to explain your reasoning for an edit, or to provide a description of what the edit changes. Summaries save time for other editors and reduce the chances that your edit will be misunderstood. For some edits, an adequate summary may be quite brief.

The edit summary field looks like this:

IPA

edit

Hello, thanks for adding these to Quebec place names, but I am under the suspicion that you're using Parisian French, and not Quebec/Canadian French. One definitive difference is that in Quebec, they add an 's' sound after t before vowels (e.g.) /t͡s/ See Ahuntsic-Cartierville for an example. Therefore, I suspect your IPA at Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie is incorrect. (I think it might be closer to p't͡sit or something like that... I also know I was taught in French class in uni that there is basically no vowel sound between the p and t in petite.) Of course, French isn't my first language, nor do I live in Quebec, so I'm no expert. -- Earl Andrew - talk 21:47, 7 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Earl Andrew:Yes, your suspicion is correct. The IPA I added is based on Parisian French. My knowledge of Quebec French is quite limited, so I don't feel confident adding IPA based on it. I believe what I'm doing right now should be fine. Currently, there are many Quebec-related articles without IPA, so I’m adding it for now. Later, others can add the IPA based on the local pronunciation, just like in the Trois-Rivières and Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce articles.--BigBullfrog (talk) 22:18, 7 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
As discussed in MOS:PRON, as long as the transcription is linked to Help:IPA/French, it should use the conventions of the key. Nardog (talk) 04:18, 9 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
