Popular articles have their versions in various languages. On the left side of the page, there are links to German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish version of the same page. Does it get linked automatically or it can be done manually? --Action Hero 11:14, 6 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

In principle it gets done automatically, and not just for popular articles but for any where versions exist in other languages. Manual updates can be made if for some reason (e.g. titles differ) the automatic process doesn't work. See WP:WikiData for details. JohnCD (talk) 11:26, 6 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Apple, Inc., Foxconn, and its Labor Practices

Requesting opinion on this article Apple, Inc., Foxconn, and its Labor Practices. Doesn't look fit to be on Wikipedia. -- Action Hero Shoot! 07:27, 14 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. Doesn't fall under any of the standard speedy deletion criteria, so I've tagged it for deletion via WP:PROD. Yunshui  07:58, 14 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Patrolled pages appearing yellow

edit

Cemaes Head, Panagiotis Anagnostopoulos (general), 1984–85 Maryland Terrapins men's basketball team, Jeremy Slater, Cleveland City Hall.

In the list of newly created un-patrolled pages these pages appear in Yellow colour since yesterday. I am unable to find "mark this page as patrolled link" which appears at the bottom of the page. These pages are already patrolled but they are not leaving the Yellow list- like the other pages i patrolled and then they quit the list of Yellow pages. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:NewPages&dir=prev&hidepatrolled=1

New Page Patrol

edit

Hi. Thank you for patrolling new pages. I noticed that you tagged EasyAcc, Inc. but you didn't tag it for deletion WP:A7 which for an experienced editor should have been quite evident. Also, if article creators are not informed of attention that is required to their articles, especially essential referencing, chances are that nothing will be done about it. I notice also that you are a very new user and that you would generally need a lot more experience before trying your hand at patrolling new pages. There are easier tasks such as Counter Vandalism that would enable you to get your feet wet on maintenance tasks more easily. Now that you have over 200 mainspace edits you can enroll at the WP:CVUA to learn more about it. Happy editing! --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 07:22, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Kudpung: Probably my memory is not working at this moment, as i was trying to remove the speedy deletion tag of EasyAcc. User named Gpgaryani-don't remember his username- added speedy deletion tag. Are you sure i nominated EasyAcc, Inc. for deletion? In this deleted talk page i gave references to save that article which were from www.pcadvisor.co.uk. The user didn't know how to add references. Google news search of "EasyAcc" showed some results. I tried to move the article to a draft to prevent speedy deletion, which didn't save the draft also. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=EasyAcc&action=edit&redlink=1

Action Hero Shoot! 07:38, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
The point is that until you have learned some basics such as talk page formatting, and then progressed through CVU and then thoroughly read WP:NPP, with only 300 edits to mainspace, you are probably not ready for the complex task of patrolling new pages. 500 edits and three months re required for the far less important reviewing tasks at AfC. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 07:46, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
I think also that you need to do something about your sigbature. If you are going to get involved in maintenance tasks, a lot of people will be dialoguing with you and some of them, like me, are rather old-fashioned and conservative. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 07:48, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Kudpung:If you feel, i will not patrol till 2015. My created pages were being patrolled by users. That's how i got interested. I found lots of pages actually belongs to speedy deletion criteria, but New page patrollers were simply tagging as unsourced, no reference. Before tagging speedy deletion i do my own google search, google news search to make sure i am not tagging Notable-unsourced article for deletion.Farah Ann Abdul Hadi This article has no source but google results were positive and i didn't nominate it for deletion. You must tell other patrollers to be bold enough and nominate unwanted pages for speedy deletion. I have read somewhere in Wikipedia be BOLD while editing. Hi, I'm not sure why you have emailed me in particular, but I'm happy to comment.

First, the easy bit. He also asked me to use normal signature. I'm no expert on signature policy, but I do find the first part difficult to read for my old eyes.

Kudpung was giving advice, but obviously that's not binding. There are always pages which are straightforward for you to tag for speedy deletion, such as verbatim copyright violations, gross spamming, and self-written pages but if you are in any doubt, consider prod, afd or improvement as alternatives. I've deleted more than 80,000 pages and I still come across pages where I'm not sure if they meet the criteria. Occasionally, I tag for AFD or delete myself, only to find another admin disagrees that the article meets the criteria or believe that the article can be edited to meet the objections. All I'm saying is that, given your inexperience, when in doubt don't tag.

If you think that people are writing about something in which they have a conflict of interest, remind them that they must declare that interest. In particular, likely paid editors such as company employees should be warned using the {{Uw-paid1}} tag.

This forced me to open an account., well there are benefits. You can't easily be located, unlike an isp, and you can keep a watchlist etc.

I'm not sure that I've fully answered your question, but feel free to get back to me Jimfbleak - talk to me? 09:47, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • It would be a great plus for our collaborative environment if people would stick to facts, not take things out of context, and not put their own spin on others' words. It's further up on this page, what I said was 'I think also that you need to do something about your sigbature (sic).' There was no mention whatsoever about using a normal signature. Inappropriate warning

edit

This was an inappropriate warning. You warned a user for having a promotional user name, when, in fact, they are using their own name. While self-promotion is not allowed, using one's own name as a username is allowed. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 12:13, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

@WikiDan61:That means if the Username is similar to an organization/company only then its promotional, okay!. The autobiographical Article was similar to his username, so i gave that warning.......--Action Hero Shoot! 12:16, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
There is a more appropriate warning for people who write autobiographical articles: {{uw-auto}}. As has been pointed out to you by others, if you're going to involve yourself in NPP, you kind of have to know what you're doing, or you can badly step on a lot of feet and end up needlessly biting the newbies. Take it from one who has made that mistake more than once and learned from it. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 12:22, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion

edit

There are three options in Twinkle to delete an article, speedy deletion, nominate for deletion and proposed deletion. I know how to use speedy delete. I nominate for deletion when i require other editor's views.

When to use this proposed deletion or PROD. And what happens to this pages which are tagged as proposed deletion? --Action Hero Shoot! 13:59, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Although I have only used WP:PROD a handful of times I'll try my best to give you an answer based on WP:PROD's page. Proposed deletion (PROD) is a way to suggest an article for uncontroversial deletion, for things that don't exactly fit in the speedy deletion criteria, but there isn't expected to be any objection to the deletion. It must not be used for articles tagged with WP:PROD before or articles that have been discussed on articles for deletion in the past. Hope I helped, if you have any further questions feel free to {{ping|Kethrus}} here.   --I am Kethrus Talk to me! 14:24, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

More about foreign languages and/or speedy deletion criteria

edit

I saw you deleted your own response but you said something that calls for correction. "How non-English articles without much context and no reference will be dealt with? If English articles are deleted for zero reference, then non-English should [sic] be kept. They should be tagged as articles needing translation. That page WP:Pages needing translation into English, we have to add manually or Twinkle automatically adds them. Most articles listed on that page, have some context and references." With one exception (see WP:BLPPROD for the treatment of articles on living persons that have no references), a lack of references is never grounds for deletion. It's a maintenance issue for which the article should be tagged as {{unreferenced}}. If someone challenges the article for a lack of verifiability or notability, then the ability to identify any reliable sources becomes necessary to avoid deletion—but even then, adequate sources save the day even before anyone adds them to the article.

An article on FC Citadel that says "FC Citadel is a Bulgarian football club" has content, and that content provides the context we need to know what FC Citadel is: a football club. It qualifies as a stub (and can be marked at the bottom with a suitable stub template). It doesn't meet the criteria for deletion under WP:A1 or WP:A3, and there was no reason to treat it as a test page. —Largo Plazo (talk) 16:05, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Both WP:A1 and WP:A3 explicitly exclude "coherent non-English material" from their scope. —Largo Plazo (talk) 16:33, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hold on, IMDB is generally not considered a reliable source by Wikipedia editors. --NeilN talk to me 17:08, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
I agree totally, but there is a very low bar for the kinds of references that will satisfy the BLP rule. My understanding is that almost ANYTHING will do. If an imdb entry for one movie is the best there is for the subject, though, he doesn't appear very notable. ubiquity (talk)
ubiquity, no, not almost anything will do. A link to reliable source is even present in the message. If a source is not considered reliable, it cannot be used to remove a BLP PROD. --NeilN talk to me 17:40, 15 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

It's quite easy. On the Commons description page for a file, in the left-hand sidebar under "Tools", there is a link "Nominate for deletion". Click on that, fill in the reason, and it does it all for you. JohnCD (talk) 12:50, 16 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Crown of Midnight - Summary

edit

Action Hero wiki prefers paraphrasing to blockquotes. You could, in theory, blockquote the entire "official" Crown of Midnight summary (referencing deleted conversation [1]). But that was written by the publisher for the purpose of making money. It is their words, they own them. We should avoid any potential copyright issues and paraphrase. The ubiquity of that official summary on other sites is not a good measure of its acceptability on Wiki. We are much stricter and more serious about copyright. Hope that helps. --Lucas559 (talk) 16:29, 16 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

RM vs. RFC

edit

Page moves (renames) are done with {{Rm}} not {{Rfc}}; I refactored it for you at Talk:The Valiant Little Tailor. Neither template goes inside == Heading == markup. Quick rundown:

1. {{Rm}} for WP:Requested moves:
{{subst:Rm|Desired title here|reason=Your rationale here.}}

Basic use. Edit whole talk page, stick it at the bottom, no need to sign it – sig is auto-included along with the heading (or "header" as this template calls it). Template must be substituted. Or the complicated way:

== Heading here ==
{{subst:Rm|Desired title here|header=no|sign=no|reason=Your rationale here. ~~~~}}

That's the all-manual use, if you already opened a new section and gave it a name, and want to sign it yourself at end of rationale.

2. {{Rfc}} for WP:Requests for comments (not used for move/rename, except in odd cases, like several RM discussions failing to come to consensus):
== Heading here ==
{{Rfc|code1|code2}}
What you're asking or proposing, phrased as neutrally as you can muster. ~~~~

People get grouchy if you provide a one-sided rationale in RfC (but one is expected in RM). Sign the "issue description" manually, not the template. Template is not substituted. The RfC codes are listed at Template:Rfc/doc, and one is not required, but helpful. More than two is rarely helpful.

Hope this helps. :-)  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  03:05, 17 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

AfD formatting

edit

You opened an AfD about Ahmed Mohamed with a bullet point before your comment - this makes it look as if the AfD was raised anonymously for no reason and that you're responding to it as the first commenter, which is a little confusing. Your nomination rationale should just be a plain description of why you think the article should be deleted. --McGeddon (talk) 11:28, 17 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

I was going to start a new section, but it seems there's no need... Please don't simply blank AFD discussions you've started if you change your mind. You are welcome to withdraw your nomination if you wish; just add a comment to that effect. However, unless you are literally the only person to have edited the discussion page, you should leave it for someone else to close (and you should close it using the proper process, not by simply blanking the page). Yunshui  11:37, 17 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
WP:WDAFD explains how to withdraw an AfD nomination. (Blanking it leaves odd gaps here and there, which may be automatically reverted by bots - the AfD is still listed at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Log/2015_September_17, for example.) --McGeddon (talk) 11:41, 17 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Magnus Chase (disambiguation)

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Magnus Chase (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
