The official Wikipedia policy defines "vandalism" as follows:

Below is a list of specific things that I regard to be unconstructive and unhelpful.
If your edit follows the pattern of any of the things listed below, I can almost assure you I will revert it.

  • Any edit that consists completely or primarily of swear words.
  • Any edit that compares someone or something to a body part below the waist.
  • Any edit that mentions, discusses, desires, or in any way alludes to human reproduction. Even in articles about human reproduction.[1]
  • Almost any edit that mentions, discusses, desires, or in any way alludes to the reproduction of any living thing. (or non-living things...)[2]
  • On pages about days: (e.g. August 27)
    • Any edit that adds a name without a link.[3]
    • Any edit that adds a name with a red link.[3]
    • Any edit that adds a name and states that the subject "is 'the man'", "is 'the best'", "sucks", "got beat by XXXXX", "is gay", etc.
  • On articles about sports: (Teams/athletes/stadiums/referees/equipment/rivalries/etc.)
    • Any edit that states that a team/an athlete/a stadium/a referee/some brand of equipment/etc. "sucks", "is 'the best'", "is gay", etc.
    • Any edit that states that an athlete has zero career touchdowns/goals/tackles/assists/RBIs/saves/home runs/etc.
    • Any edit that states that an athlete made an inordinately large number of touchdowns/goals/tackles/assists/RBIs/saves/home runs/etc.[4]
    • Any edit that states that Albert Pujols went through an entire season without making one home run.[5]
    • Any edit that states that a team/an athlete/a stadium/a referee/some brand of equipment/etc. "is widely regarded as the best/worst ever" without providing a citation.
  • On articles about towns, cities, countries, other political divisions, schools, colleges, universities, etc:
    • Any edit that adds a name without a link.
    • Any edit that adds a name with a red link.
    • Any edit that adds a name and states that the subject "is 'the man'", "is 'the best'", "sucks", "got beat by XXXXX", "is gay", etc.
  • Any edit that says "Bush is teh gay." or something similar.
  • Any edit that includes a broad generalization about an elected official. (e.g. XXXXX is the best/worst/most incompetent/whatever)
  • Any edit whose edit summary lies. (e.g. saying you corrected a typo when you actually deleted half of the article.)
  • Any edit that personally attacks someone or something.
  • Any edit that involves a person, place, or thing that is not especially important, or that does not provide enough information to positively identify the subject of the sentence or phrase.[6]
  • Any edit, not on a talk page, that apologizes for vandalizing. If you are really sorry, please, just stop.
  • Any edit that consists solely of text generated by clicking on the buttons above the editing window. [7] If you want to experiment, please use the Wikipedia Sandbox.
  • Almost any edit at all that includes text generated by clicking on the buttons above the editing window.[8]
  • Any edits that add external links pointing to the same domain to more than one page in quick succession.
  • Any edit that adds defamatory content to a page without including a citation, regardless of what the page's subject is.
  • Any edit that uses variants of the word "legend" as a direct object, an adjective, or an adverb without including a citation.[9]

If after reading this page, you still think that I should not have reverted your edit, feel free to leave me a note on my talk page.

When writing, please remember that, as I am a human being, I am not infallible, and I do make mistakes. For best results, write a clear, concise, and civil note. If possible, include the name of the article you are concerned with. Also, please remember to sign your post with four tildes (~~~~).

Swearing, cursing, and/or attacks will simply be reverted and ignored, and they could even get you blocked from editing.

Notes

edit
  1. ^ Nothing has changed with this for thousands of years. The articles are fine the way they are; there is no need for you to turn a perfectly good encyclopedic article into a porn magazine entry.
  2. ^ I do not want to irrevocably commit myself here. There may be a way to rationally discuss this subject — I just haven't found any yet.
  3. ^ a b This function has largely been taken over by a robot account, User:PseudoBot. I will still revert if I see a diff before the bot does.
  4. ^ e.g. 13 touchdowns in one game, 350 goals in the last two months, 35 RBIs in a doubleheader, etc.
  5. ^ The Cardinals are one of my least favorite teams, and this still drives me nuts. You have no idea......
  6. ^ For example, "Alice was here", "Joe's Bar serves great food", "Juan Sanchez recently placed fourth in the 9th Annual Fayetteville 5K Run"
  7. ^ For example: '''Bold text'''[[Link title]]''Italic text''<nowiki>Insert non-formatted text here</nowiki><!-- Comment -->[[File:Example.jpg]]<sub>Subscript text</sub><ref>Insert footnote text here</ref> and so forth.
  8. ^ If it is obvious that the inclusion of the default text was an error, I will simply remove it, and leave the rest of the edit.
  9. ^ Anyone who actually is a "legend" will be able to back it up.
