BugCat Capoo (貓貓蟲咖波 Māo māo chóng kā bō), sometimes abbreviated to Capoo, is a cartoon character resembling a small blue cat monster with six legs, and the name and main subject of a webcomic strip on Facebook and Instagram, cartoon clips on YouTube as well as stickers on LINE and other social media. Capoo was created by Taiwanese artist Yara in 2014, and the comic has been present on several platforms, including WEBTOON.
Capoo is described by the author as "a little monster like a cat and like a bug, both violent and cute, who loves to eat meat"[1]. The comic usually depicts Capoo as a cute, gluttonous pet, living together with his owner Yara and the seemingly immortal Dog Dog - a large yellow dog seemingly skilled in all tasks - in Yara's home. Much of the comic revolves around everyday situations which explode into absurdity, and often end with Capoo either eating whatever frustrates him, or Capoo being comically punished by Yara for causing damage with his antics.
Webcomic
editThe world the comic takes place in is generally grounded in everyday life, yet contains various comical features such as sentience and expressive faces on terrain features, clouds and even celestial bodies, conventions like buses instead being large friendly turtles, and a host of anthropomorphic supporting characters including a gentle female dinosaur, Capoo's pink fluffy sister, and tiny, round creatures resembling young chicks which are frequently hunted by Capoo.
The comic is notable for its juxtaposition of the cute and the macabre, due to Capoo's occasional propensity for violence and the devouring of living beings, which is counter-balanced by Dog Dog's unexplained immortality and regeneration abilities, and the lack of permanence in the comic strip, where characters and objects are returned to their regular state between comics.
History
editBugCat Capoo started in 2014 as a series of amateur comic strips published by author Yara on their online art portfolio,[2] initially with a much higher degree of the macabre violence that juxtaposes the cute art style. The comic soon expanded to a blog[3], a Facebook page, a WEBTOON page, and Yara began publishing short animated clips depicting Capoo's antics on YouTube.
Today, the main platforms for the comic are Facebook and Instagram. Physical books containing the comics have also been made.[4] BugCat Capoo artwork is available as stickers on social media platforms like Facebook and LINE.[5] Capoo and other characters from the comic have been part of various collaborations with games and companies.[6][7] The popularity of the character and comic have also spawned a number of businesses, such as an online merchandise store[8], the "Capoo House" physical store[9] and the "Foam cat cafe"[10].
