editViking Press published the book in hardcover on February 15, 1972, with a list price of $5.95 (equivalent to about $33 in 2023, adjusted for inflation). Viking printed between 1,000–1,144 hardcover copies.[1] The first paperback edition, in a run of 5,000 copies, arrived the same day with a list price of $2.25 (about $12 in 2023).[2] Ecco Press published a second edition in 1989 with a new cover designed by Trevor Winkfield, a painter and friend of Ashbery.[3]
