The Original Barnstar
Thank you so much for creating the draft article for the soon to be announced Tim Scott 2024 presidential campaign. I have created an article with your and the other editors' content at Tim Scott 2024 presidential campaign. If you have any edits, put them there. Again, thank you for creating the article. Move request

edit

Hi there BD i apologize for bother i was wondering do you think that Draft:Michał Materla is good enough to go to mainspace fighter is also notable and i improve draft a lot. DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 14:42, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

@DarkHorseMayhem: Why don't you submit it through the AfC process? Also, I immediately noticed some types/spacing issues. The draft needs another round of proofreading. BD2412 T 16:07, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
I forgot how to add that template DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 16:08, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
Also what issues what i did wrong?... DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 16:09, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
I have added the template for you. With respect to issues, I just see some typos in words and spacing issues around punctuation. I'll give it a quick sweep. BD2412 T 16:10, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
@DarkHorseMayhem: I have improved many of the grammar and spacing issues (there were a lot of missing definite articles, e.g. "won the bout, not "won bout"). It may need further checking for these sorts of issues, as mine was rather cursory. BD2412 T 16:25, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, my bad for bothering you.DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 16:28, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
No bother, it's what I do. Cheers! BD2412 T 16:58, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
Bro sorry to bother did but did you remove part of section? DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 17:12, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
I did not remove anything, but I corrected the formatting of the section headers and in this edit I consolidated some sentences into paragraphs. BD2412 T 17:15, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
Yeah somewhere was remove ref paragraph and messed up one section DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 17:18, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
Sometimes adding headers or consolidating paragraphs can make it appear in the viewer that a section has been removed, but if you do a word-for-word comparison, you can see that I did not remove anything. BD2412 T 17:21, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
sorry DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 17:27, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
@BD2412 i apologzing for being it was my mistake mb...I added missing refrance like you said can you check page once again..Also that page need administration status to be made i think. DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 18:11, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
I have submitted it for review. Another admin will do the review. BD2412 T 18:17, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
Are you angry? DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 18:18, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
No, but since I have now worked on the page it is appropriate for a different administrator to review it for acceptability. BD2412 T 18:19, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

Deletion of draft that is on mainspace

edit

Hi there do you mind deleting Draft:Azamat Murzakanov...there is page about him on mainspace already: Azamat Murzakanov? DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 15:18, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

@BD2412 DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 19:01, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
@DarkHorseMayhem: I am concerned that it appears that the content was generated in draftspace and then copied and pasted to mainspace, which is impermissible per Wikipedia:Cut and paste move. BD2412 T 19:03, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
Yeah User probably just didnt move draft to directly to mainspace but copied and made it in process left draft behind DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 19:05, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Azamat_Murzakanov&action=history see DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 19:06, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
In that case, the draft can not be deleted, and must be redirected. I will check the other recently deleted drafts to see if this is a recurring issue, and will caution that editor. BD2412 T 19:08, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
Oh pls no need to worry user is AFC reviewer and didnt do anything wrong if you dont want to delete draft thats okay DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 19:09, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
Unfortunately, this is a serious issue, and I can not ignore it. BD2412 T 19:18, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
So its okay to just move draft to mainspace and not copy past to ''new'' page? DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 19:19, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
As this is an article for a previously deleted topic, it should have been submitted for AfC review by an uninvolved reviewer (i.e., not the same editor who created or heavily edited the page). BD2412 T 19:21, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
Sorry for trouble and thanks for help on article DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 19:23, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

@DarkHorseMayhem: Sure, what is the issue. BD2412 T 23:03, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
Can you help me with expanding some artical I'm still just inexperienced editor:. Expanding this aritcale for for example Draft:Bobby King (fighter).... Sorry if this is inappropriate request DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 23:09, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
The subject matter is outside of my expertise. You would be better off asking editors who have routinely worked on articles in the area. BD2412 T 23:40, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
Okay for future reference on what matters I can ask you for help DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 23:44, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
@DarkHorseMayhem: I generally write articles about U.S. judges and court systems, Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, and broad-concept topics like Size, Guessing, and Consolation. BD2412 T 23:52, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
Drafts of Alen Amedovski and Jason Jackson are origanlly deleted cause nobody edit them for 6 months so they should be deleted DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 00:10, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
That rule is inapplicable to redirects. As noted above, Wikipedia's attribution rules require the history from cut-and-paste moves to be preserved. BD2412 T 00:38, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
Smh it's all my fault... DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 00:43, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

Bullying

edit

I don't know where else to turn, maybe you can help. User:BlueboyLINY has been bullying me for quite some time now, constantly labeling grammatically-correct, factual, and properly-sourced edits I make as "non-constructive" and calling me a "disruptive editor". I have attempted to reason with this user but to no avail. BlueboyLINY did it to me again with edits I made to The Merv Griffin Show which corrected factual errors and added links to sources. He reverted my changes twice, most recently this evening. Please assist if you can. MasterControlMaster13 (talk) 01:06, 4 May 2023 (UTC)

I am posting my reply to @MasterControlMaster13:'s post on my talk page here as well.
"As I previously stated when you accused me of harassment two months ago, I would like to clarify that the label "disruptive editor" is not a personal attack on you, but rather a response to certain actions or behaviors that have been observed on Wikipedia. While I appreciate your attempt at consistent, factual, and structurally and grammatically correct edits, it is important to keep in mind that Wikipedia operates under a set of guidelines and policies that are in place to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the content on the platform. If there are any issues with your editing, it is because they have been brought to your attention in the spirit of improving the quality of the content. I offered to discuss any specific issues or concerns you have with your editing, and received no reply from you. Based on your lack of discussion on article talk pages, It seems to me that you are not willing to approach these conversations with an open mind, and a willingness to work collaboratively towards the common goal of improving the accuracy and reliability of Wikipedia." - BlueboyLINY (talk) 02:06, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
Based on the above exchange, WP:ANI may well be the best venue to address this. BD2412 T 02:15, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
I'm not sure if WP:ANI helped. Please look into this further. MasterControlMaster13 (talk) 02:49, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
I may, but I have a series of priorities lined up now, and therefore will probably have a fresh look tomorrow. BD2412 T 02:54, 4 May 2023 (UTC)

RE this can I just clarify why you consider there to be a COI? I see that AncientWalrus has declared that they are a user of the site, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they have a COI. Is there something else that I've missed? SmartSE (talk) 17:25, 4 May 2023 (UTC)

@Smartse: We have had a number of WP:SPA accounts converge on this article, claiming that the are editing under legitimate sockpuppet accounts due to some relationship with GISAID that causes them to fear retaliation, but not divulging the specifics of their affiliations. Multiple SPA's arising within a short time frame and operating in an article in this way is rather odd by itself. A WP:SPI investigation found that it was possible that there is (illegitimate) sockpuppetry going on, but could neither confirm nor exclude that possibility. The concerns arising from the fact that we have multiple SPA's acknowledging some degree of conflict in a topic falling within the already contentious COVID-19 area are sufficient to prefer that those editors proceed through proposing edits on the talk page rather than editing the article directly. I asked them to do exactly that, and one appears to have reacted to this request by pointedly editing the article directly, which seems to be an exercise in trying to test boundaries of permissibility. BD2412 T 19:28, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I have also been following this SPA issue, and I notice their tendency to appear to ping editors to discussions at the help desk and on the talk page whom they seem to expect will support them. Their conduct does not add up to just being strangers who happen to share an interest in a topic and are seeking to work on it without an agenda. For instance, one account says they are using a valid sock to avoid retaliation from GISAID yet are editing more topics outside of GISAID. The most recent issue of failing to get talk page consensus, then going to DRN to get consensus, then coming back to the talk page attempting consensus yet again shows a clear POV-pushing issue in my opinion--CNMall41 (talk) 21:37, 4 May 2023 (UTC).
Thanks for the background. Not sure if you've read the recent sources but, both Science and The Economist have both reported that researchers who openly criticise the organisation (even very slightly) often end up losing access to the database, so it does seem like a legitimate use of alt accounts for privacy. I agree that if SPAs are planning on making major changes which could be controversial it would be good to discuss first, but I don't see how minor changes like that diff I linked to are an issue. There's another source recently published which I can't link to but I will send you both a copy so that you are aware. SmartSE (talk) 22:07, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
@Smartse: Is this article the one being suggested in this edit? It seems a little odd that an editor (another SPA) would have advance knowledge of such a publication. BD2412 T 22:21, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
@Smartse:, Very concerning article. Reply sent. --CNMall41 (talk) 00:03, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
That is a strange edit and I'm also not sure what to make of the reply. I will say that if someone is disgruntled and has access to media (or scientific journals), publishing a POV story isn't difficult. Wikipedia, however, is not the place to WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS. Seems like the organization and its dissenters are wanting to use Wikipedia to tell their side of the story. --CNMall41 (talk) 00:03, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
It's difficult to tell, it could just as equally be something like this published yesterday in Nature. Obviously journalists need sources though and somebody must have tipped off the other source. @CNMall41: I didn't receive a reply. SmartSE (talk) 08:15, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
@Smartse:, Just resent. Inboxes like to send me to junk folders so maybe I found a place there. --CNMall41 (talk) 08:44, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
@CNMall41: Aha yes indeed - only checked the spam folder of where it gets forwarded but not my gmail. SmartSE (talk) 08:55, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

Hello do you minn deleting following drafts that I request to be undeleted but don't want to edit them anymore :Draft:Rustam Kerimov and Draft:Grant Neal? DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 00:53, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
We generally don't do that. No one editor owns a draft and can decide that others can't edit it, which is what will happen if those drafts are deleted out of process. If no editor works on them in the next six months, they will be deleted as a matter of course. BD2412 T 00:56, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi, sorry I didn't get back to you on my talk page before it was archived. The block is not of the individual IP but of Special:Contributions/216.213.192.0/18. The entire range appears to belong to an educational institution and has a long history of vandalism, hence the long-term block. It's a soft block with account creation allowed in an attempt to minimise collateral damage. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:24, 6 May 2023 (UTC)

Roy Rosselló

edit

Hi – in this edit you referred to Roy Rosselló as "a cousin", presumably of the Menéndez brothers. I couldn't find a source for this. Roy Rosselló seems to be a cousin of Ricardo Rosselló. In the meantime, someone removed the reference to "a cousin"; I thought I'd let you know in case you have a source. Joriki (talk) 16:54, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

@Joriki: That's on me, I misread the CNN article (which references "a letter sent by Erik to his cousin") to mean that Rosselló was the cousin. BD2412 T 17:05, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

Inquiry

edit

Rather than systemically replacing {{OW}} on a large number of pages, wouldn't it make more sense to just redirect it? I know that BOLD is somewhat circumscribed on template-protected pages, but presumably if a note were left on the talk page and no one objected after some reasonable time WP:SILENT would apply, otherwise it would probably be best to seek community input through TFD. 74.73.224.126 (talk) 21:32, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

The templates remain two different templates with different purposes. However, most pages with the {{OW}} template currently applied are now fairly old. BD2412 T 23:14, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
Seems to me they're similar enough where a merge is a workable; with display text set by a parameter. However, consolidation isn't always uncontroversial, and if the number of pages too new for default text is large the benefit in terms of reducing work will be less.
If, as it sounds, you are doing these replacements purely based on time since last page revision you may want to consider a BOTREQ which will enable everything to be processed in one batch in a series of bot-flagged edits. 74.73.224.126 (talk) 23:38, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
A merge with a parameter is a very good idea. I will look into that. BD2412 T 23:42, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

R from sort name/ambiguous

edit

Hello!

Would you mind explaining your move of {{R from sort name/ambiguous}} back in January? Every single other rcat template has the "R from ambiguous sort name" format, none are subpages. I personally think that this should be reverted, but I'm interested to hear your original reasoning. Thanks! ~ Eejit43 (talk) 22:17, 17 May 2023 (UTC)

  • @Eejit43: I frankly have no recollection of making this move, but I presume it had some positive effect on the way the template appears in its category structure. I would not have moved the template for the sake of moving it. BD2412 T 21:05, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
@BD2412 personally, I don't see any possible reasoning behind it. Out of all the other rcat templates (even some that seem like the could be subsets of other templates), none exist as subpages. For standardization reasons, I'd suggest reverting the move, unless you have reasoning otherwise. Thanks! :) ~ Eejit43 (talk) 01:34, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
@Eejit43: Done. I wish I could put my finger on the reasoning behind the initial move. BD2412 T 01:49, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
@BD2412 Thanks so much! And no worries, it may come to you at some point :) ~ Eejit43 (talk) 03:10, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

(disambiguation), The

edit

Hi, I saw you made many redirects ending in "(disambiguation), The", such as Help (disambiguation), The, as {{R from ambiguous sort name}}. However, I'm confused as to the use case of this - clearly it makes sense for disambiguation pages not ending in (disambiguation), like One, The (which incidentally doesn't even exist), since those sortkeys could be used as links or search queries, but I don't see how doing that for an already-(disambiguation)-ed title is ever useful (the target page doesn't even have a sortkey in The Help's case). Am I missing something? eviolite (talk) 01:33, 18 May 2023 (UTC)

  • @Eviolite: Sortnames sort the actual name of the sorted page, whether it has the disambiguator in the name or not. In this case, the sortname for the novel, The Help, is Help, The, and the sortname for the disambiguation page is Help (disambiguation), The. Since the disambiguation pages themselves are not sorted into subcategories indicting use of a definite article, having a category of sortnames for these allows them to be easily reviewed in the event that a common formatting change needs to be made across the set. BD2412 T 21:10, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. I think in that case it would be intuitive to additionally have the disambiguation pages themselves include a DEFAULTSORT key so that they do actually act as sortnames. eviolite (talk) 00:37, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
Yes, they should be sorted that way. BD2412 T 15:55, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

Rebecca Black "Let Her Burn" Tour date list?

edit

I was a bit confused by this addition as these specific dates and countries don't appear to be notable in context with the Let Her Burn album. If you look at the "Tour, cover art, and date of release" the information is already covered in prose. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 16:55, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

@Knowledgekid87: Some of the content was covered in prose, but not all of it. It seems to me that it is fairly routine to have lists of concert tour dates in articles covering concert tours. In theory there may be enough sources to have a separate Let Her Burn tour article (there are more to be found), but the article is short enough to accommodate both topics. BD2412 T 18:08, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

Your action here was inappropriate; as an editor involved in the dispute you should have proceeded through normal channels if you wished the article restored, rather than using your admin tools to do so yourself. In the future, please do so. BilledMammal (talk) 12:20, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

@BilledMammal: I will keep that in mind. Note that any editor can create a new article at the title of a previously deleted article that has not been salted. The reader-facing outcome is exactly the same as if no admin tools had been used. BD2412 T 17:45, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you; if you had created a new article there wouldn’t have been an issue with regards to WP:INVOLVED. BilledMammal (talk) 22:12, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

Deleting draft that hasnt been edited for 6 months

edit

Hi there do you mind deleting Draft:Ahmed Mujtaba? Draft that hasnt been edited for almost six months or do we need to wait until June 5? DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 20:03, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

It will be deleted automatically on June 5. BD2412 T 20:24, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

Merge request

Could you please merge/consolidate Draft:Mike Pence 2024 presidential campaign with the newly created Mike Pence 2024 presidential campaign as you have previously done with similar campaign articles? Much appreciation! A. Randomdude0000 (talk) 17:49, 5 June 2023 (UTC)

The draft was already in every respect superior to the new article, so I have just moved it over. BD2412 T 18:06, 5 June 2023 (UTC)

Potential violation of contentious topic etiquette

edit

Hello, I've left you a message on Talk:Robert F. Kennedy Jr. 2024 presidential campaign#Interviews as Primary Sources. The conversation got very heated and some potentially personal attacks were made. I know you flagged the talk page as a contentious topic. I was just wondering if in your assessment the conversation was conducive to the rules and conduct required for such a topic. Woko Sapien (talk) 15:41, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

Having worked on the topic substantively, it might be controversial for me to weigh in on the discussion in an administrative capacity. BD2412 T 17:52, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

Your Mail on Sunday close

edit

Hi, You are the closer of the discussion Can we please adapt the Daily Mail consensus to reflect a position on Mail on Sunday?. Does your conclusion mean that opinions expressed by Mail on Sunday columnists are never allowed? I ask because there was a recent dispute about a TV-show review at Talk:Russia 1985–1999: TraumaZone, for which Redrose64 disallowed an RfC. Peter Gulutzan (talk) 14:08, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

The outcome of the deprecation discussion was that the source was completely deprecated, which means that Wikipedia treats it like it is not a source at all. BD2412 T 21:45, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
That's the opposite of what the Daily Mail closers decided and I regard your definition as not consensus based. But okay, I won't try to restart the RfC. Peter Gulutzan (talk) 00:17, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
The discussion in question stands on its own. It was very well-attended for a Wikipedia reliability discussion, and represents the consensus on the specific question raised in that discussion. BD2412 T 19:34, 11 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi there sorry to bother you do you mind resurrecting history of this page:Tresean Gore as well resurrecting its talk page. DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 12:36, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

I see that this article was recreated after having been deleted in an AfD discussion just days ago. I have therefore re-deleted the page, and salted the title to prevent further recreation. I feel that your conduct in connection with this also merits administrative review. BD2412 T 21:05, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
How can i prevent ''merits administrative review'' against me? DarkHorseMayhem (talk) 21:16, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Probably don't get involved in requesting restoration of article histories for recently AfD-deleted pages. It is suspicious conduct. BD2412 T 21:39, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page List of the first women holders of political offices in Asia, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

  • A "bare URL and missing title" error. References show this error when they do not have a title. Please edit the article to add the appropriate title parameter to the reference. (Fix | Ask for help)

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 02:47, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

Fixed. Note that the title error was already present before my edit, but became apparent due to my repair of another error in the same template. Cheers! BD2412 T 05:10, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

I noticed that most entries in this list are just minor characters without their own articles. I am concerned that there are almost no actual articles about fictional bats to support a list, as opposed to just removing them as cruft. A possible alternative is moving the page to Bats in fiction and removing the list entirely. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 23:30, 26 June 2023 (UTC)

I think it would be fine either way. I don't see a case for removing citable characters based on their being "minor", though. BD2412 T 00:22, 27 June 2023 (UTC)

Hello, BD2412,

Wow, your talk page really got flooded with Firefly Bot messages! I just wanted to let you know that this draft is due to expire tonight and you might not have received a notice about it because the last edit to the page was by a bot in March. But the last human edit was January 2nd and so those who keep track of these things might delete the draft as of its last edit by you, not the bot. To tell you truth, you are working on so many drafts, I don't know how you keep track of them all! But I just wanted to alert you about the status of this particular one. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 20:17, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

@Liz: Thanks. I have gone ahead and published the draft. Sometimes I get these things to a basically publishable state, and then let them linger for a last look, when I really need to just finish the article. BD2412 T 20:40, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
Well, I guess creating all of these interesting articles is how you get to 2M edits on the project! I can't imagine where you'll be when you hit the 20 year mark! Liz Read! Talk! 00:10, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
I'll hit the 20 year mark in 20 more months. BD2412 T 00:29, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
Maybe you'll be at 2.5M edits? Just guessing, I don't know if you edit every day or occasionally take time off. But that's a lucky number for me. I'm all about "5"s. Liz Read! Talk! 02:04, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

Draft(s) precedent?

edit

I have question. I know it was proposed at ANI that judicial nominee articles start as drafts to be edited until confirmation/return/rejection. I was looking over the thread but couldn't tell if consensus was reached. Some of the articles (i.e. Julia K. Munley, Jennifer L. Hall, Brandy R. McMillion, Joseph A. Laroski) got deleted outright, where as others (i.e. Tiffany Cartwright and Brendan A. Hurson) were moved to drafts. I was going to request undeletion and draftify of the aforementioned four articles citing the draftify discussion, but I couldn't really tell what the outcome was/is or if it's an ongoing discussion. Was consensus reached that they should start out as drafts? Snickers2686 (talk) 19:19, 8 July 2023 (UTC)

I always find it more useful to start things in draft space. It takes the pressure off for having something that can immediately survive a challenge. BD2412 T 20:16, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
I have restored the remaining deleted articles to their requisite draftspace titles. Note that Jennifer L. Hall is now at Draft:Jennifer L. Hall (judge), as there was another draft at that title. BD2412 T 20:24, 8 July 2023 (UTC)

Draft, Bill Carmody

edit

Hi! I see you are a member of WikiProject Law. I am seeking feedback on a draft I created about trial attorney Bill Carmody, of Susman Godfrey, who has been profiled in the press several times because of the size and prominence of his cases. I have explained more here: User talk:Backyard116/sandbox/Bill Carmody/Seeking feedback. He’s a personal connection of mine, so impartial advice on notability and neutral point of view would be greatly appreciated. Backyard116 (talk) 15:33, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

  • @Backyard116: We generally do not gauge notability of an attorney based on the notability of clients represented by that attorney. We would be looking for sources that focus on the attorney themselves, and their influence in the field. BD2412 T 20:40, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

What were you doing with Chris's?

edit

I see you made a large number of edits recently that created batches of broken redirects like Vail, ChrisChris Vail, Chris with a {{bots|deny=AnomieBOT III}} and then immediately after updated them to point to the correct target and remove the {{bots}}. Why did you not just create them correctly in the first place? Anomie 11:46, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

I have found, through years of trial and error, that this is the most efficient way to proceed. It's a two-step process, using {{SUBSTPAGENAME}} to create the redirect, and then removing the excess portion of the pagename generation. The ultimate goal is the third step of identifying disambiguation pages (and pages missing hatnotes, or with potentially ambiguous titles needing disambiguation) and further editing those to indicate sortnames from ambiguous redirects, which are usually about 8-10% of the lot. BD2412 T 15:03, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
It still seems like you should be able to do it without saving the broken revision. Anomie 21:50, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
It could theoretically be done by a bot, but then certain issues apparent to the human eye would be missed. BD2412 T 21:52, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
You're already using AWB in a fairly bot-like manner for the initial two edits, the second appears to come within seconds of the first. Can AWB not do it in one save rather than two? Anomie 22:06, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
I have not found a way to do this as quickly manually, without having to type out the portion that differs from one edit to the next. I don't mind the second save. It insures that I look at each redirect twice, and sometimes it is the second look that catches my eye for an issue to be checked further. I make a rather large number of follow-up improvements to the articles I come across through this method, so I think it works for the project as a whole. BD2412 T 22:17, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

Sensitive (and time-sensitive) DYK hook

edit

Hello BD, I'm posting here because you're listed as a recently active administrator who is willing to help out at DYK. There's an active discussion at WP:ERRORS about the ethics of running a hook mentioning an online suicide forum – the Main Page has just changed over to display the hook, but the discussion hasn't reached a consensus yet despite quite a few editors expressing concern. Would you be willing to intervene and pull the hook until discussion can conclude? – Teratix 00:26, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Not having done this before, I do not have the technical wherewithal to have confidence that I can pull a hook without breaking something. BD2412 T 00:28, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

  • I have opposed this deletion in the relevant discussion, as this is not the same character. This picture is from Deadpool version of the character, portrayed by a different actress (Shioli Kutsuna, rather than Rila Fukushima) with a different appearance. If an image from the Wolverine version can be extracted, then both should be included as a gallery to demonstrate the different versions of the character. BD2412 T 17:56, 19 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello BD2412 -- Hope you don't mind me asking a question. Not familiar with much of this, but I notice the biography headings on top of the pages when editing. Art Rooney has 'NFL biography', Dan Rooney has 'officeholder'. I would have thought Art II would be 'NFL biography'. Just trying to wrap my head around where Canada is coming from. Do these headings really mean anything? This is an honest question, I swear it.

Thanks in advance for your time and input. Regards, Bringingthewood (talk) 21:27, 19 August 2023 (UTC)

I have no particular insight here, except that the "gridiron football" template redirects to the "Canadian football" template, and AWB automatically bypasses template redirects. BD2412 T 21:29, 19 August 2023 (UTC)

Ahh, never thought it would do that. That's why I asked first and didn't revert anything. I've been a Steeler fan for decades and never heard of Canadian football and the Rooney's in the same sentence. I'll leave it alone. Puzzling. Well, thank you for the quick response. Bringingthewood (talk) 21:33, 19 August 2023 (UTC)

If Oxford, Cambridge, or Dublin then it's generally preferable to link to Master of Arts (Oxford, Cambridge, and Dublin) than Master of Arts. DuncanHill (talk) 00:18, 20 August 2023 (UTC) And of course there are Scottish MAs too... Master of Arts (Scotland). DuncanHill (talk) 00:20, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

  • Master of Arts encompasses all uses. However, I am only expanding links that already redirect to Master of Arts, so if those can be further refined, that is a separate question from whether the initialism should be a redirect. BD2412 T 00:41, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

Technical question about AFD closing method

edit

I have a technical question about the method that you used to close this AFD. Specifically, the boilerplate footer says that it is using {{Afd bottom}}, but it is missing the <b>...</b> tags and closing italics that were added to that template in 2018. Are you using a copy of that template that you have saved somewhere? Or are you using a tool or script that might have saved an old copy of that template somewhere? I'd like to minimize the proliferation of new syntax errors on AFD pages, so I'd like to get that outdated boilerplate text updated. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:29, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

Black albums

edit

Hello. I'm looking for a second opinion and picked on you as closer of Talk:Embrace (American band Embrace album)#Requested move 23 January 2016, though I realise you have had many other things to think about since then. It moved Black (1987 album) to Black (singer Black album), to distinguish it from Black (band Black album). I notice that we now also have Black (singer Black 1991 album), so technically the 1987 album has become incomplete disambiguation. Systematically, I could move it to Black (singer Black 1987 album), but that seems pedantic. Should we do that, or move it back to Black (1987 album) (needs admin help due to intervening edits) and the 1991 work to Black (1991 album), or just let sleeping dogs lie, or do you have a better idea? I would then retarget the resulting redirect Black (singer Black album) to Black (disambiguation)#Albums as (possibly our most detailed) {{R from incomplete disambiguation}} and add the 1991 work (whatever its new title) to that section. Certes (talk) 14:37, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

@Certes: I frankly do not know how to begin untangling this mess, but I think more precision is needed in these cases, and would go with Black (singer Black 1987 album) here. BD2412 T 16:25, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Thanks; I'll go with the longer but more accurate title. I'm working through lists of similar little messes, though most are false positives which require just a hatnote or nothing. The most complex one so far was Bangladeshi Abdul Mannan (politician), not to be confused with Abdul Mannan (Bangladeshi politician), nor with several other Bangladeshis such as Abdul Mannan (politician, born 1952), a year which also saw the birth of Abdul Mannan (West Bengal politician). NH Supreme Court justices

edit

I'm adopting a new hobby. I was thinking to make sure that every NH Supreme Court justice had an article. But even as I was first looking into it, I discovered that you had provided substantial drafts already. If you consider my efforts to be interfering with yours, I'll happily go off to find some other hobby horse. But I'm seeing you approaching a much broader set of topics with a much broader brush, so I'm expecting my filling in of details will be a welcome addition. We'll see if I'm actually able to contribute in this way. Cheers. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 19:08, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

@Jmcgnh: Honestly, nothing would make me happier than for you to finish those drafts. I have drafts in various states of disrepair for 850 missing state supreme court justices, and if I manage to finish one a week, it will take me sixteen years to get through that list. Query

edit

Hello, BD2412,

This is a strange request to make but I'm going to give it a shot. Typically, we have anywhere from 100-300 drafts expiring via CSD G13 on any given day, typically around 200 drafts over the course of 24 hours. But on Saturday, 9/2, we have almost 900. This can happen when bots make edits or, more commonly, when editors are active in Draft space with editing tools like AWB. There are really just two admins who monitor the G13 list and this is a lot to handle, especially during the hours of 00:00-03:00 UTC that day when there are over 100 drafts expiring an hour. There are other concentrated hours of expiring drafts but things seem particularly heavy during those three hours. Apparently, coincidentally, several different editors just went to town that day editing articles in Draft space with editing tools and moving a lot of articles from main space to Draft space.

I know you are a whiz with editing tools and if, over the next 4 days, you had any legitimate edits to make to drafts that are expiring on that day to lessen the load and delay deletion for some of them, well, I know I'd welcome that. Of course, it would help if you didn't edit in bursts of 100 pages/hour so we don't face this problem again in six months' time! I realize that when you do edit, you're not targeting pages that have edits from a specific day so maybe this request will make no sense at all but I thought I'd ask. Deleting expiring drafts is done individually, not in a batch delete, so I anticipate this task taking up a lot of time on Saturday.

Thanks for any relief you can provide or, if this request makes no sense at all, thanks for humoring me! Liz Read! Talk! 18:49, 29 August 2023 (UTC)

I just noticed that a lot of expiring drafts that day concern madrasas and mosques so maybe that would be a way to filter drafts and just catch a few hundred that way. Liz Read! Talk! 18:55, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
@Liz: Glancing over the list, I see only a few that are clearly worth saving. Mosques and madrasas are not inherently notable, and I question the reliability of information for the large set of Uzbek townships. I may dabble with a few others on the list, but I see no reason to go to great lengths to save these, despite their number. BD2412 T 19:19, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
We just had dozens and dozens of drafts on Uzbek villages hit their 6 month mark and I dislike doing my share of this kind of deleting. It looks like the editing was part of an edithon because the articles were near identical and used the same sources but there were a number of different editors all editing over the same period of time. These towns very well could have been notable but these editors are long gone. At least if they return to the project, they have Firefly bot notices on their User talk pages so they have some record of the drafts they created. If I could magically change one policy on Wikipedia it would be to allow editors access to their deleted contributions because otherwise they have no written record of work they've done that has been deleted if they don't maintain a list of their own.
I guess there is just no way around the fact that Saturday UTC is going to be a busy day for some of us. Hey man im josh often helps with the tagging of these pages so they can be filtered into the CSD category and the patrolling admins there can do a quick delete but he frequently doesn't edit on the weekends (but I'll tag him here in case I can lure him into service!). Any way, thanks for considering this odd request. Liz Read! Talk! 20:41, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
You are correct @Liz, I do frequently not edit on weekends. I will however try to make an effort to pop on a few times here n there to help chip away at it as best I can. Hey man im josh (talk) 20:44, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
The problem is that the number of expiring drafts is very inconsistent over the course of the day. Some hours have only 3 drafts, other hours have over 100. Such is life. But if you could drop by, it would be appreciated. Liz Read! Talk! 23:14, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
