His father was John Sellars (born c. 1819) from Dundee.

His mother was Isabella Webster (born c. 1821) from Dundee. John and Isabella married on 16 July 1848 in Blairgowrie, Perthshire.

David Ramsay Sellars was born on 28 April 1854 in Musselburgh.[10]

He married Ann Jack. They married on 4 December 1874 in Dundee.[11]

The couple had two children, but only one survived.[12]

The marriage did not last. Sellars divorced Jack on the grounds of her adultery; the case going to the Court of Session in 1885. Jack had registered a child at the Glasgow registry saying that her husband was not the father to the registrar. The child was marked as illegitimate on the register. Sellars said that his wife regularly attended public houses and neglected the home. She left Sellars in 1880 saying that she had no interest in him, and that he should take no more interest in her.[13][14] [15]
