Fair use rationale for Image:Discovery Channel.gif
editImage:Discovery Channel.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
HD section
editAt the beggining, it seems to be a bit advertisment-ish as it states 'It features the best in science and technology, nature and adventure programming all in true HD.' Any suggestions? Ilikepie2221 (talk) 21:25, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Destroyed in Seconds
editDestroyed in Seconds isn't Canadian-produced; it says so right on the actual article that it's made in the US. Any objections? Garfield1675 (talk) 07:15, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Procedural close – moved to USA Network (Canadian TV channel) by editor Danmackay125 per discussion below. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 23:42, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
Discovery Channel (Canadian TV channel) → Discovery Channel (1994 Canadian TV channel) – On 1 January 2025, this will no longer be the Canadian Discovery Channel, instead, a new different channel will be stood up and become the Canadian Discovery, since the license for "Discovery" group was transferred to a different licensee, and BellGlobeMedia will lose the right to the name (hence it being replaced by USA Network Canada, with a different programming of content, Discovery shows moving to the new Discovery.) This current particular network was stood up on 31 December 1994. -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 04:40, 12 December 2024 (UTC) This is a contested technical request (permalink). 65.92.246.77 (talk) 21:40, 12 December 2024 (UTC) — Relisting. ~🌀 Ampil 「💬 / 📝」 08:00, 21 December 2024 (UTC)
Copied from RMTR speedy move request
- Thank you for catching this. I agree that the article should be moved. However, I think "1994 Canadian TV channel" implies that the channel only existed in 1994, when the channel actually existed for almost 30 years. I think this should be handled by a requested move where editors can discuss various alternative titles and pick the best one. Toadspike [Talk] 09:51, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Toadspike: It is exactly how we name other articles, like wars (War of 1812 lasted several years), TV shows (Dallas (1978 TV series) lasted over a decade), ships lasting many years (HMS Enterprise (1774) lasted decades), etc, use the year of first launch. Even people use this (Jim Jones (American football, born 1935) died 1982). It is the CONSISTENT way to disambiguate it. -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 20:17, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- @65.92.246.77 You are correct that we often use starting years as disambiguators for other subjects. However, looking at the Cable television channels in Canada and Defunct cable television channels in Canada, I do not see any other TV channel disambiguated in this way. In defunct US television stations, I only found WBKI-TV (1983–2017), among a variety of other disambiguators. Perhaps Discovery Channel (1994–2024 Canadian TV channel) is okay? Quite long, though.
- I don't mean to be a jerk, I genuinely do not think this is as CONSISTENT as you think it is. If you disagree, feel free to open an RM. Toadspike [Talk] 20:51, 12 December 2024 (UTC)

- Move to USA Network (Canadian TV channel) on January 1, 2025. Create a new article for the Rogers-owned Discovery Channel (Canadian TV channel) at that time. This is exactly what happened with Bravo (Canadian TV channel) earlier this year. 162 etc. (talk) 01:36, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
- I think it would be easier just to have this as a historical article, and a new article at USA Canada started with this referenced as a history subarticle instead, for an era in the history of the channel. I think Bravo should also be so handled, with OLN Canada as a subarticle. These have seriously different programming, and different from the specialty licensees that they started with.. -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 16:47, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
- Many such content shifts happen in Canadian television, and I can't think of any Wikipedia articles that have been split in the way you suggest. MusiquePlus/Elle Fictions are the same article, Canadian Learning Television/Oprah Winfrey Network (Canadian TV channel), etc... 162 etc. (talk) 17:08, 13 December 2024 (UTC)
- Comment In all cases Discovery Channel (1994 Canadian TV channel) / Discovery Channel (1994–2024 Canadian TV channel) should exist as redirects to replace incoming links to point to the proper Discovery topic. -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 16:49, 13 December 2024 (UTC)

- I agree with this approach. As a point of information: Someone has ready created a separate Flavour Network article rather than taking a similar approach with the existing Food Network (Canada) article. I reverted this a few days ago only for the editor to revert it back. I am currently travelling so not in a position to easily do more but wanted to note this somewhere as no one else seems to have noticed this yet. — stickguy (:^›)— || talk || 01:26, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
- Again off topic, but since we're talking about it: HGTV (Canadian TV channel) is another one just like this. The existing Corus channel will be known as Home Network, and a new Rogers channel will be launched as HGTV. 162 etc. (talk) 18:35, 27 December 2024 (UTC)

- This business relationship creates really thorny title problems. There are a few ways to go at this, though they will require retargeting links and not leaving redirects:
- The originally proposed disambiguation method. It is true that this (or some other order) would be common in other title areas and that it is not in this topic area. More than 6,000 articles use Infobox television channel. There are four disambiguated by year: BBC Select (1992–1995), TA3 (1991–92), TV6 (1994), RTS 3 (1989-2006). In addition, there is an odd double disambiguator, Factoría de Ficción (TV channel, 2000–2007), that arguably should be just a year. The entries on TA3 and TV6 sorely need a more descriptive disambiguator and I suspect I will be RMing them really soon. The OG BBC Select is such an oddball in concept that any disambiguator would be unusual. And I am unsure how to handle RTS 3 given that the only other topic, one on which an independent article is currently lacking, is a present-day TV channel in the same country. To the instant article, while I think that this is a viable title generally, the fact we are having this dispute here tells me someone would try to move that page. I'd also support Discovery Channel (Canada, 1994–2024) with Discovery Channel (Canada) (everything at the disambiguation for Discovery Channel is a TV channel or named for a TV channel).
- Note that I'm not talking about TV stations cases like WBKI-TV above. Call sign titling is its own island.
- A double move of Discovery Channel (Canadian TV channel) → USA Network (Canada) (this is where it belongs as there are no non-TV channel topics named "USA Network" — yes, this means at least one page move) and then starting the new channel at Discovery Channel (Canada) (again, everything at the disambiguation for Discovery Channel is a TV channel or named for a TV channel). This is my preference and also matches to some extent the Bravo case. While call sign titling is its own island, what it shares with the common-name TV channels is that some of them can have major shifts in format without a break in article topic. The history of Spike TV is in Paramount Network, for instance, though The Nashville Network's later revival did result in its own article. (Conversely, Syfy (Latin American TV channel) and USA Network (Latin American TV channel) should probably be merged. Sammi Brie (she/her • t • c) 21:05, 23 December 2024 (UTC)

- Support the double move per Sammi given the reasons she has provided. This makes the most sense and consistent with P&G. TiggerJay (talk) 00:52, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
