West Antarctica
What, pray tell, is "West" Antarctica? How can I be west of the south pole? --Locarno 20:26, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- the part of antarctica in earth's western hemisphere
Dependent Territory?
This island is part of the Antarctic Treaty System. It is not dependent of any country and no single country exercises exclusive sovereignty. The introductory sentence should read something along the lines of "It is claimed by Norway as a dependent territory..." instead of "It is a dependent territory of Norway" which clearly is not. - I might agree with the change of wording, but not your argumentation. Peter I Island is claimed by Norway and that claim is recognised by Australia, France, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, so saying that it "clearly is not" is biased. The Antarctic Treaty also makes it very clear that territorial claims are not renounced. --- Nidator T / C 21:18, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
- "Violation of the Antarctic Conservation Act carries penalties of up to US$10,000 in fines and one year in prison." - for your information, mr. Nidator.
- I can't see how US congressional acts have any relevance to this discussion. -- Nidator T / C 20:21, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
