Split?
editThis article has lots of beautiful images and plenty of quotes from literature, but I think this is where we can use sister projects of wikipedia like wikimedia commons and wikiquote and link from here, infact commons has no images related to Nainital as of now. This article looks very bulky now, perhaps the sections related to history can be split up into a separate article History of Nainital and have a shorter version here? ~ srini 05:35, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
- Lot of merit in what you say. If you don't mind, let me look over the article and mull over how best to do this. Will get back to you tomorrow with questions. Sanjay Tiwari 01:29, 23 October 2006 (UTC)
- No problem. I don't mind the images or even the detailed history staying in the article, but 'Nainital in literature' section seems a little out of place here, atleast to me. It can be moved to wikiquote or if that is not possible a separate article here in wikipedia. But as you've been the major contributor to this article, I think you are in the best position to judge if this is necessary and how to do it. Of course, I'm willing to help in whatever way I can. Please take your own time. ~ srini 09:48, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, I just created a page, Literary references to Nainital and moved all the quotes over to it and many of the older pictures. (While I was doing this, some guy called Sin-man, who seems like a borderline vandal, put in all kinds of tags and removed an html anchor). Any way, I don't know if this is the best format or not, but I'd like to hear what you think. Also, what is wikiquote? And how does that work? Look forward to hearing from you. - You did well to move the 'Nainital in Literature' section to a new page, but I think the quotes are more appropriate in wikiquote. Wikiquote (http://en.wikiquote.org) is a sister quotations project of wikipedia. You can create a new article for Nainital in wikiquote and copy into it all the contents from 'Literary references to Nainital'. You can refer similar wikiquote pages related to cities here, Kolkata would be a good example to start with. Once you create the Nainital page in wikiquote, just add the template {{wikiquote}} in the Nainital article here, it will add a link to the corresponding page at wikiquote. You may also want to upload public domain and other free images to Wikimedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org), a repository of free images, so that those images can be used in wikipedia, wikiquote and all other wikimedia projects. Feel free to ask me for any help ~ srini 06:51, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
References to the library.
editThis was brought to my attention a few hours ago by a friend from Nainital. Its nice that _something_ is generating interest in the wiki page on Nainital.
Sanjay has disagreed with the inclusion of a reference to the library on the main page. In his opinion, the library is not noteworthy ehough. I would disagree. In my opinion, that is one of the fondest memories that I have from the city - and I am sure is shared by many.
Anyhow - a reference is called for. Sanjay - how do you propose to handle it ? Merely deleting it by stating that it is not notworhty enough is hardly fair.
Everyone else - please hold your edits till Sanjay responds. Lets use this opportunity to enrich the page. While we have some fresh blood trying to add to the page, lets try and make this page even better. I can volunteer to do some work - lord knows that I have been-meaning-to-and-not-getting-around-to-it.

- Please read WP:ORG#Primary_criterion. The "Municipal Library, Nainital" does not give any (accurate) returns either in Google Scholar, or on Google academic sites, i.e. "Municipal Library, Nainital site:edu". In contrast, "Sherwood College, Naini Tal" or "Landslip of 1880, Naini Tal" give many accurate returns. Fond memories don't make something notable. Sanjay Tiwari 01:01, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Fair enough - a secondary source shall be cited the next time an entry is made for the library - or for that matter any other institution in Nainial. Actually - by that criterion, the library shall easily outweigh many topics on that page. Also, please note that the link you refer to sets a standard for the notability of a main-article - not a detail on the main subject. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.49.76.148 (talk • contribs). at 04:18, 2 May 2007
- The criteria for content inclusion are similar. You are welcome to include the library in the Educational and Research Institutions section, just not in the History section. Sanjay Tiwari 07:40, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
- PS I've created a "Libraries" subsection (in the Education and Research Institutions section) which lists a number of libraries including the Municipal Library. Sanjay Tiwari 10:00, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

My latest edits
editList of people. I didn't realise that they were in order of birth. Usually lists are in order of last names but I have left them in the birth order.
Images. The first image Image:Nainital snow lake.jpg is in the wrong place, too close to the infobox, and causes large amounts of whitspace. It should be set to the standard thumbnail size and moved down to keep the article clean,as I have done. As to the other images they don't need the "Click to enlarge" comment. There are no other articles that I have seen that have images with that on. Nor do the images need credits. When you click on the images the credits are viewable there, this is the same as other pages. In fact several of the images are replaceable "fair use" and should probably be sent to Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion.
Other edits. Using for an example the first paragraph. The coordinates are at the top of the page and in the box, both as clickable links, so why have an unclickable on right after the name. There is a link to Kumaon but that's a disambiguation page and needed fixing to Kumaon division, there were several other links to disambiguations that needed fixing. "Imperial Gazeteer of India" is incorrect and should be The Imperial Gazetteer of India.
At the same time I fixed several redirects such as correcting "Himalaya" to "Himalayas" and "Ganesha" to "Ganesh" to "Ganesha".
I also added conversion templates to measument figures throughout. This ensures that all figures are converted and not just some. It all ensures that the conversions are consistant throughout and not dependant on whatever convertor the last editor used.
Also I have added multiple links that were not there before and would be of use to the reader. Some examples are "Bhim Tal" to Bhimtal Lake, "Saat Tal'" to Sattal and "Hanuman Garhi" to Hanumangarhi along with several schools and other general links. - OK, great. Thanks for explaining. Great job. Sanjay Tiwari 23:09, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, I didn't realise how major the changes were. I should have explained the first time. I just noticed that I had removed the bolding in the "Nainital Today" section which I just restored. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 01:16, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
About my edits done on 21 August
editHi Sanjay
First sorry for the delay in reponding to your call.
As regards my first two edits. The places discribed therein are not in or arout the Nainital city and I still feel that those details should be provided either in the articles on those places or in the Nainital district's article (which is still to be developed). Also at the end there are some names which just provide link to the articles, these, to me, appear unsolicited. If a reference to other places appears necessary, in this article, a small paragraph providing adequate inforamtion and links may be provided. And the formatting is completely wrong, Education should be a separate section -for sure- and even if sub-sections 'In and around Nainital' and 'Outside Nainital' are considered necessary these should be numbered 4.1 & 4.2 and not 4.1 & 4.1.1.
As regards third edit, I feel that such lists are not warranted as these do not provide any information about the place about which the article is written. Moreover neither any of the featured articles given at the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Indian_cities has such a list nor any such section has been recommeneded on the project page.
Still if it is felt that some personalities deserve a reference in the article a list or section may be given about the persons who have had major influence on the city / area or who have given significant contribution towards the development of the city / area or there can be a separate article and a link to that may be provided. I am somehow not convinced that a list of all the persons relating to the city- even remotely- should be given in the main article. For example neither in this article or in the article about Govind Ballabh Pant it is discribed how he is related to Nainital city.
Waiting for your suggestions. mānav 12:52, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

photographs & split
editcan someone make a precious contribution of some rare old photographs of this marvelous town. or if mail me at [email protected]. The place is beautiful creation of nature ,its history fascinates but yes,I feel that the page should be split into 2 with history o f nainital, cause it seems a liitle heavy and might not interest a few(no doubt the history isnt interesting )for they might be expecting something easy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Manv0901 (talk • contribs) 03:39, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Naina peak
editThe height of naina peak mention there 8622 ft. But Wikipedia so different which height is correct? Vikram Singh Bisht (talk) 07:55, 9 August 2017 (UTC)
I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Nainital's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
