Talk:Magic (New Zealand radio network)

Network vs station

edit

Is this a network or a station? It is broadcast throughout New Zealand, but all broadcasts are the same (ie all broadcasts are from one studio in Auckland). [cc @Bkonrad] Ollieinc (talk) 06:45, 18 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

What is a radio station and what is a radio network? This looks to me like a network of stations. olderwiser 11:01, 18 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
In Radio network#New Zealand, the networks are listed as being Radio New Zealand, MediaWorks Radio, The Radio Network, etc. and below them are stations - one of which would be Magic if that list was updated in the last couple of years. Ollieinc (talk) 12:20, 18 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
It is not at all clear from the listing at Radio network#New Zealand that the sub-bullets are "stations". Indeed, in a quick check of several articles, many are described as "networks" rather than "stations". Perhaps there may be a regional difference, but my understanding is that a station typically refers to the physical broadcasting equipment or the frequency on which the equipment broadcasts. olderwiser 14:14, 18 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
It looks to me like these "stations" may be a network of broadcast relay stations -- which would be the case if the individual stations (frequencies) do not broadcast any localized content or advertising. But even so I think the individual frequencies are more typically what are known as "stations" and the source of the content would be the network or the brand. olderwiser 14:42, 18 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
In New Zealand they are referred to as radio stations;[1][2][3] whereas the companies that own the radio stations - MediaWorks Radio, NZME (formerly The Radio Network), Radio New Zealand - are known as networks.[4] Ollieinc (talk) 09:48, 25 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Updates made 18 June 2020 explained

edit

A number of updates have been made to the frequency listings. The key changes:

1. Removal of references to TAB Trackside Radio frequencies owned in the name of NZ Racing Board. It appears that when TAB Trackside Radio operations were suspended on 12 April 2020 that an editor believed those frequencies would broadcast the Magic programme. No evidence was provided. And from observation, the transmitters have been switched off or are broadcasting an open carrier.

2. The broadcaster current website listings do contain some errors:

- there is no broadcast on 93.3 FM in Bay of Plenty and there is no licence issued in at least 25 years (if ever) for this region

- the broadcast coverage for 98.0 FM listed as Paeroa should read Reporoa which 160km away from Paeroa. The licensed transmitter site is on Paeroa Range about 10km away from Reporoa. There is no licence[1] for 98.0 FM issued in at least 25 years (if ever) for Paeroa

- 100.5 FM Lyttelton has been omitted

I am in Wellington. Magic is being broadcast on 98.9, 104.5 and 891 despite the latter two frequencies being removed from the broadcaster's website. I have cited a secondary source that is proven to be reliable.

104.5 is likey to be reallocated to another Mediaworks brand between now and 1st May. Any update should be made when the change is made and supported by a reliable source.
