editTHE PEOPLE OF KARNAL DISTRICT IN HARYANA (INDIA)
Tribes castes and their traits:
Principal castes and tribes at present inhabiting the district are, 1)Rors 2)Rajputs 3)Jaats 4)Gujjars 5)Tyagis 6)Brahmins 7)Kambhojs 8)Mahajans(bania) 9)Jogies 10)Ravidasia 11)Balmikis 12)Baragies etc. and last but not the least, Panjabis having migrated from Pakisthan in the wake of partition of country.
THE RORS:
Ror is a main caste, who claim kinship with the Chauhans. In the time of Prithvi Raj Chauhan (Rai Pithora) the ancestors of Rors were "Mandliks" and kinsmen of Rai Pithora himself. They have a main clan called Mahela, which was the ruling clan of Mahoba, the site of a major battle for supremacy between the Rors and Chandels. It was this fight over Mahoba, the ruler of which was Rai Mahal Si, ancestor of the Ror Mahlas, which finally led to the intervention from Rai Pithora in which almost all Banaphar and Chandel warriors were killed. At present they are good cultivators and land-owners. They came from Badli in Jhajjar after having fought with Aibak over the question of "Dola" or forced giving of daughters to the Turks. Giving of "Dola" had become an accepted practice amongst Rajputs after the Hindu army had been defeated in the Battle of Tarori. The Rors have a chaurasi of villages about Pehova, Butana, Kaul, Pundri, Nilokheri, Nissang, Matlodha, Safidaon, Assand and 12 villages beyond the Ganges. They have obtained property in Karnal district exclusively by displacing the nomadic Gujjars in many cases and by claiming the land under the forest in the dense Dhak jungles around Thanesar and Kurukshetra.
Rors are fine stalwart men and are often referred to as a Raja(king) by other neighbouring castes. Their other clans are Jograns descending from a Chauhan Ror prince called JOGA and mainly occupying village of Kurana, Ghantar from Gharval in Rohtak holding Alupur and neighbouring villages and Khenchi, whose ancestors had come to fight in Badli from Narar Jajru close to Jaipur in Rajasthan, holding Ahar etc.
