Symmetric and alternating groups
editI found some constructions in Matzat and Malle (1999), and more in Jensen, Ledet, and Yui (2002), but I would like to see the original source. I looked up Hilbert's paper some 30 years ago and I seem to remember that Adolf Hurwitz was also somehow involved. Partial Results
editI believe the partial result attributed to Hilbert is actually Emmy Noether's result, using the Hilbert irreducibility theorem, proved in
