editThis article needs some heavy revamping. Rewords things, take out the interviews. Jordan Cable 11:52, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Speedy delete
editI'd say {{db-band}} is a bit rushed for a band that is covered by major retailers. [1] [2] To anyone with serious notability concerns: Try an AfD, there might still be consensus to remove the page and in the very least it might wake up regular contributers to finally add some actual references. - Cyrus XIII 10:08, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
- Yep, I suggest an AfD, and not a speedy. By reading the article, I get a hunch that it might be notable. AfD will buy time to search for refs. --soum (0_o) 13:11, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
Meme Status
edit"As of now, girugamesh is taking over 4chan." This is encyclopedia-worthy? --68.33.60.92 (talk) 04:47, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
- As of last night 4chan was being DDoS'd and spammed with posts filled with fake pictures of this band. §hawnhath 23:56, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
- That statement is hardly encyclopedia-worthy, but the fact that Girugamesh is popular enough to appear in a con ad and spawn a trend might warrant a mention in a Pop Culture Appearances section. -moritheilTalk 06:10, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- It seems to be a fairly limited phenomena, and only of interest to people within the "JRock community." This doesn't constitute encyclopedic content. --Jacob Talk 05:18, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
The "Yo Dawg" meme has a section in Xzbit's article. Rick Roll and Chocolate Rain has it's OWN article (which were 4chan memes). I think even a small mention of this would be useful, especially if this meme spreads (for the sake of 4chan, I hope not).Indianparttime2 (talk) 22:55, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
- Only if we start seeing MTV actually whoring themselves out on Internet memes, then, No. It's merely now some stupid meme from some stupid video created by some stupid VA with a God-Complex for a Convention that I will now blacklist from my travel itinerary. --293.xx.xxx.xx (talk) 09:07, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
GIRUGAMESH --81.232.130.207 (talk) 10:05, 29 March 2009 (UTC) GI RU GA MESH ! 69.225.137.149 (talk) 23:21, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
I still think it deserves a mention. A lot of memes are mentioned in articles whether or not it spread through MTV, YouTube, Facebook, etc. If one wants to know what it's all about, they would have this article to look at the small mention about it being a meme, how it originated, etc. Indianparttime2 (talk) 07:39, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- Take it to ED. Oh wait, they already have, and the consensus is that it's the dumbest fad ever conceived. Rick Astley Rickrolled the world on national television. Girugamesh is just some fad that newbies tried with all their might to force onto 4chan and stunk up the joint. Girguamesh!!! only deserves a mention on my left butt cheek. Vodello (talk) 15:57, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- It should be noted that ED thinks most new memes are dumb. ZZT32 (talk) 00:52, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
It should also be noted that Wikipedia doesn't care how unpopular something is. It's neutral and also NOT EVERY MEME THAT CAME AFTER RICK ASTLEY SUCKS JUST BECAUSE IT WASN'T ON NATIONAL TELEVISIONIndianparttime2 (talk) 09:31, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
- Wikipedia isn't a popularity contest, but there are guidelines on notability (see WP:N) that must be followed at all times. --Jacob Talk 16:43, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Maybe you can get it in on mentioning them being guests at Sakura-Con and being mentioned in the commercial RKFS (talk) 02:20, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
- It's not about finding loopholes, it's about whether it has the proper notability to be included in the article. Citing the meme's actual popularity would be utterly impossible as well, as there isn't any site which has bothered to report on the "phenomenon". --Jacob Talk 03:23, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
I don't personally care whether this reference gets added or not, however, I'd like to add that I've known about the meme for a fair bit of time now, and only just realised it was about the band. I told several people today who I knew knew of the meme, and they were also surprised. I think this really suggests that the meme is probably more popular than the actual band, thus making all notability rejections utterly ironic. 86.9.215.47 (talk) 18:58, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Bad idea. If you need to know more about this, go ahead and search for it on ED or something (obviously, no link). It's amusing, but hardly notable. Then again, Lev Grossman.. Aaron ► 06:36, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
GIRUGAMESH!
editThe meme is by far more popular than the band. The meme is noticeable with people not knowing what it is referring to "GIRUGAMESH".

- Agreed. Hanii (talk) 23:33, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
- To say that people who don't know the band, and know the internet meme constitutes a greater notability is really bogus! There are, as one might rationally guess, a large number of people who know Girugamesh and don't know the meme, and the impact which a band has on music, business and culture is something much more measurable, durable and notable than that of a small picture and various captions which are sparingly found on a cult website. --Jacob Talk 00:39, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
- I'd never heard of the band until the made me look it up - and somehow, I have an inkling that it's the same for most people outside the JRock subculture, especially considering it came out of an imageboard that's culturally Japanese by origin. Hanii (talk) 12:54, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- Similarly, many people who are in the JRock "subculture" did not know of the 4chan subculture at that time, and many of them became familiar with the site. As shocking as it may be, a majority of people don't actually know what 4chan is. That said, this "meme" was very short lived and from what I understand, not wholly accepted (a "forced meme" if you will) and while 4chan is a notable topic, and memes are a notable topic, this meme has not punctured the barrier between counterculture and mainstream trend. This, here, is what generally constitutes notability (that is, when press and outsiders begin researching and writing or spreading the information), and while Rickrolling and Lolcats may have plenty of sources on the internet pointing out their popularity, this captioned photo, posted a handful of times within a popular imageboard, is not even a fraction of the notability of a band who has successfully broken into the Japanese music scene, performed metal festivals in other continents, and gained attention in both American and European press. --Jacob Talk 16:29, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
I had never heard of the band, I thought the meme was about the sumerian king since the guy in the meme wears make-up that makes him look a bit like an indian or persian. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.248.85.65 (talk) 02:59, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
- I reiterate: the fact that Girugamesh is popular enough to appear in an ad and spawn a trend might warrant a mention in a Pop Culture references section. This has the added benefit of greatly reducing confusion for anyone who can't immediately connect the advertisement with the band. -moritheilTalk 17:35, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
- Apparently, the band does know about the meme. And they think it's hilarious. They even shared it with L'Arc-en-Ciel. I think something about it should be mentioned in the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by ForestAngel (talk • contribs) 06:13, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
Girugamesh or Girugämesh?
editI've been wondering, which one is the offical one? Girugämesh is used in many other Wikipedias, such as Finnish Wikipedia too. --Juze (talk) 08:36, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
- I think the answer is outlined well in the second-to-last question of this interview. Hope that helps! :) --Jacob Talk 14:14, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, fixed now in Finnish Wikipedia too. :) --Juze (talk) 18:39, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Change of website
editDoes anybody have a valid wayback machine screenshot of the bands website? It's been replaced by what I assume is a dating site? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.102.75.34 (talk) 08:10, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
