2011-2012 Lockout?
editWhy is the 2012 lockout not listed like the others? (Gary bettman is a rat) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.6.152.74 (talk) 03:04, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
It's the 2012/2013 lockout, but yeah, it definitely needs to be in there with the same detail as the first two. 71.205.151.50 (talk) 16:47, 25 May 2013 (UTC)Roy
Section Removed
editI removed the 2006 and onward section because it reads like hearsay and is missing reliable sources. --BillyRamirez 01:08, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
I removed the HE SUCKS at the top of the page because even though I agree, its not really appropriate to post here. Jeffy b 06:15, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
Someone else here: Why is the Judaism so prominent? How is it relevant? Does it really matter?
Bon Cop, Bad Cop
edit- Was pariodied in the movie Bon Cop, Bad Cop by a character named Harry Buttman who served in the same position and who was going to sell the Montréal team to the US. Unsure of where or how to add this if even necessary. Lsjzl 13:14, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
criticism section
editI think the criticism section should be greatly limited or even eliminated because it is very anti-bettman (see WP:NPOV). For example it referenced several teams declaring bankruptcy, if you're going to mention that you ought to mention that most have come out of bankrupcty (see Buffalo Sabres, now the number one team in league who also sold out all seats for the year).Eleigh33 20:54, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
- I tend to agree. I realize that this article had a neutrality tag, but if that entire piece on Bettman's supposed faults and injustices upon the game is allowed to stay, I'm going to write an equally lengthy piece on the meritable things that he's brought to hockey. At any rate, the link to the FireBettman site isn't germaine to any objective article, in my opinon. Predshockey17 08:40, 6 March 2007 (UTC) ---Try talking to hockey fans. Not a single one has anything good to say about Bettman. If anything the criticism needs to be expanded to detail the fact he's helped cause three lockouts in his tenure.
-I did some editing on the section, added a couple sources. I did remove these two chunks that were total bias:
- Despite the fact that the instigator rule was added the offseason before Gary Bettman took over as commissioner, fighting advocates such as CBC commentator and former Boston Bruins coach Don Cherry argue that "Bettman's instigator rule" has unnecessarily reduced fighting in the game, as well as restricted the ability of players to protect their teammates. Critics of fighting in hockey argue that fights happen for no reason, but because of the instigator rule, fights are not allowed to happen for a reason because the instigating player will be assessed an additional penalty. ---just made no sense and didnt really relate to Bettman himself
- He has also expanded to many non-hockey markets where there is not enough interest in hockey to sustain an NHL team. ---first he doesnt expand the league votes, and second if there wasnt interest the would have folded (plus carolina won the cup last year)
So these are out, but they're here if someone really wants to rework them, source them and put them back in.eLeigh33 05:35, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
I going to delete the section, and the we can rework or just eliminate it. If only there was a way to source radio shows, that section would have too much reference. The Evil Clown Please review me! 14:29, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
I disagree. Any important job will certainly have successes and failures and it would be unjustified to purposively not summarize these broad sentiments here. For example, right now after the whole "moving the team to Hamilton" fiasco (in addition to several others), there is a strong sentiment that Bettman only cares about questionably potential revenue vs real support. This is most evidently felt in Canada at the moment where Winnipeg has a brand new stadium (and certain revenue guaranteed) or not moving the team to Hamilton which is around millions of hockey starved Southern Ontarians (Leafs tickets being too expensive). That is not to say that Bettman hasn't done positive things for Canada and for hockey, simply that to not give a full account of his potential criticisms and success would not sufficiently reflect his tenure as commissioner. Again, any important job will and must have these competing views. What kind of article are we creating on him if we present it with such a particular bias? Canking 00:09, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- If you ask me, he should have his own page of this on Wikipedia, hes an asshole.--Dr. Pizza (talk) 02:47, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

POV
editThis article is ridiculous...Did Gary Bettman write this himself?
"This form of cap was something that his MLB and NBA counterparts, Bud Selig and David Stern, respectively, had been unable or unwilling to do."
"Many believe this tactic was necessary to save small-market teams from eventual bankruptcy. "
- Maybe if hockey teams in depressed "small market" Southern shitholes like Tampa Bay and Raleigh - cities that are lucky to see a week of sub-freezing temperatures a year - are unsustainable, then perhaps these teams don't belong in these cities. Scrap the salary cap, all it does is act to keep hockey teams afloat in Southern markets where hockey teams don't belong. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.183.178.138 (talk • contribs).
- This talk page is for improving this article. Whining about what the NHL has done (and using a couple of very bad examples to boot) belongs on a message board, not here. Resolute 03:55, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
- " Southern Shitholes" WTF are you talking about, both Carolina and Tampa have great fan bases, where do y ou get your infromation, I do agree that more teams should be in Canada and to move team not doing well in attendance, (Like Nashville) to Canada, but they surly ain't shitholes --Mr.Deathhawk (talk) 22:28, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

- "This article is ridiculous...Did Gary Bettman write this himself?"
- I completely agree. Although past incarnations of the article may have been too biased in the anti-Bettman direction, the current incarnation (I'm writing this on 9/30/09) reads more like a résumé than an article. Removing all references to the controversy Bettman has created/overseen would be like removing all references to controversy in the Alan Eagleson article (q.v.). It's inappropriate and historically lopsided to keep this article in the current state. This article really needs to be deleted and completely rewritten from scratch. This article is currently rated C- for good reason. I would personally rate it a D. Someone really needs to take a crack at rewriting this with a more neutral POV, certainly not Bettman bashing, but definitely not the Bettman glorification that this is while intentionally ignoring the controversy.AE Logan (talk) 19:11, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- I dislike bettman as much as the next guy but this is actually a quite neutral article which is what all bios have to be. You can add negative things to the bio but they have to be sourced. -DJSasso (talk) 19:20, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, aside from prominently mentioning the complaints of his "Americanization" of the game and "anti-Canadian" bias, complaints of the move away from traditional markets, his position as a central figure of two lockouts, being regarded one of the worst managers in sports in 2004 and the complaints over the FOX and Versus TV deals, there's hardly anything mentioning controversy at all. Oh, wait, nevermind. As DJ notes, if you have any additions that can be supported by reliable sources, feel free to make additions. Keep in mind, however, that POV goes both ways, and an attempt to slant the article in an unfairly negative light will not be accepted. Leave opinion at the door. Resolute 19:24, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Question
editI read the following sentance several times, but it don't make sense :
- "...However, those areas that showed interest in hockey whereas the only cities that the league expanded to under his watch, St. Paul, Atlanta, Nashville, and Columbus..."
Could I get some feedback on what exactly this means? Thnaks. --Mr.Deathhawk (talk) 22:24, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- I have no idea, to be honest. That entire paragraph (hell, the entire article) needs re-writing. This passage specifically is preceded by a factual error as well, since the expansion to San Jose (Ziegler), Tampa and Anaheim (Stein) were led by previous Presidents of the NHL, not by Bettman. I'll reword this passage to start, however. Resolute 01:18, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Complete rewrite
editI've completely rewritten this article over the last month to balance and source it. Hopefully I haven't missed any major concepts. Resolute 23:56, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Problematic statement
edit- In addition, four franchises relocated during Bettman's tenure: The Minnesota North Stars to Dallas (1993), the Quebec Nordiques to Denver (1995), the Winnipeg Jets to Phoenix (1996) and the Hartford Whalers to Raleigh (1997).[12]
The Hartford Whalers originally moved to Greensboro, North Carolina and not Raleigh. Eventhough it's cited, the statement isn't factually accurate. In addition, Raleigh is not as well known a city as the other three. So for these reasons, I'm changing it to read "to North Carolina". --Pwnage8 (talk) 06:40, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
- According to http://hurricanes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NHLPage&id=2738 they moved to Raleigh but played their first two seasons in Greensboro. To wit, their office was (is?) in Morrisville, NC. Saying they moved to Greensboro is like saying the New York Giants moved to New Jersey. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jbramley (talk • contribs) 20:21, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
- The Whalers always intended to play in Raleigh, they just had to have a stadium built. In the meantime, they played in the Greensboro Coliseum, which is less than an hour from Raleigh. And last time I checked, Raleigh is pretty well known. Most state capitals are. There are three major universities within 15 minutes of Raleigh (one of them is in Raleigh). Maybe you've heard of them: North Carolina, NC State and Duke. I would take it a step further than jbramley's NYG analogy. The Washington Nationals always intended to build a new stadium, but they played their first season in DC in RFK. That doesn't mean the Expos moved to one part of DC, only to move again a year later (RFK and Nationals Park are on opposite sides of the city). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.4.107.154 (talk) 14:01, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
