Childhood

edit

Where is the stuff about her childhood? I believe she wrote a book about it, and it was quite a grim experience. Surely it's worth mentioning? LaFoiblesse 2009-01-08 00h20 (GMT)

And where's the stuff about her presenting children's programmes in the "Entertainment" section? Has this article been vandalised or had lots of informtion removed? Also I think it's worth mentioning that she was the first pregnant woman to aappear on (children's?) television (mentioned on This Morning today). AnemoneProjectors 11:33, 30 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Her Childrens TV work is what I know her for.Dannman (talk) 18:48, 26 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Lords vote

edit

I can see that there has been a lot of weird vandalaism on this page, but one item that was removed seemed quite OK. Why was the section on Baroness Benjamin's Lords vote removed? I looked at UNDUE and SOAPBOx, and neither really applies. It seems more like this was removed for political reasons. Harrumpher (talk) 15:07, 21 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

The consensus over this decision and the rational can be found at this discussion. Although this discussion was brought up over this incident, I'd hope that the decision to have minimal information on individual votes would get applied equally across UK politicians' articles, irrespective of their political allegiances, as is this decisions' intention (to be politically unbiased). Hope that helps, cheers, Zangar (talk) 16:09, 21 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK. I looked at the discussion, and there does not seem to be a consensus about what to include. It still seems politically biased to have removed this.Harrumpher (talk) 08:42, 24 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Exeter Grad Ball claim

edit

History of the claim:

In 2011, she rocked up at Exeter University's Graduation Ball in a gold blouse and black mini skirt, dancing and singing for all the new graduates<ref>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz6EUo9ZvmI</ref>.
  • On 23rd Jan, User:Zangar reverted the edit, with the edit summary "non-notable info".
  • The same day, the original IP user posted an objection on his/her own talk page. The objection was probably never seen by Zangar. The objection says: "I disagree that this is "non-notable" information - the graduation ball is a major event and Floella's attendance should be documented. It clearly qualifies as "entertainment" which is how the sub-heading was titled."
  • The original IP user then undid the reversion with no edit summary.
  • On 7th Feb, 203.0.230.153 changed 'rocked up' to 'attended' in the edit, which was not contested.
  • On 27th Feb, I (User:Kimelea) replaced the contested statement with a more general one, with the edit summary "She performs at the Grad Ball every year, not just 2011. Replaced sentence with a general one about her band."
  • On 28th Feb, 82.32.197.228 - a different IP address but apparently the same editor - restored the statement alongside my addition about the band, with the edit summary "Please refrain from removing my contribution! As I have mentioned previously, this is an event and university which Floella is very closely associated with and it should clearly be documented."

I am now inviting the IP editor to talk about it here to avoid an edit war.

It is true that Floella - the Chancellor of the University - performs at the Grad Ball. She doesn't just 'rock up' or even merely 'attend', she is a scheduled performer with her band, and is very popular with the graduates. Here are my concerns about the statement.

  1. Floella's performance is, in my opinion, a treat intended for new graduates. It's not intended to be shown to the world. I don't know if it qualifies as 'contentious' for the sake of Wikipedia's high standards on biographies of living persons, but it makes me uncomfortable having it on Wikipedia.
  2. The reference given is a YouTube video of the performance, taken by an attendee. I don't believe it conforms to the standards for video clips as references. It is a primary source, unverifiable as taking place when and where the uploader says it took place, and the video itself may violate the copyright of the band.
  3. The statement implies that Floella performed at the 2011 Grad Ball only - I don't know how long she's been doing it, but 2011 certainly wasn't the first year. I can't cite a reliable source for that and nor would I want to. There's a reason her performance is not widely reported in secondary sources - it is a private event.
  4. The Graduation Ball is not important enough to the wider world to be mentioned in the University of Exeter article, or anywhere else on Wikipedia. I disagree that it is important enough to make it worth including in a person's biography.
