Alternative name Esme
editThis was already in the info box before I added it to the intro. There is Facebook's Memorial Page. [1] Rothorpe (talk) 12:24, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
- Is that citable evidence? Or is that a spelling error as well? -- SteveCrook (talk) 13:29, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes, she was credited as 'Esme' - but the evidence is that it was a long-established misprint/misreading. Rothorpe (talk) 14:25, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
- The review of Holiday Camp in The Times calls her Esme, but she's definitely Esma in the credits. I think that it is people just getting her name wrong. If it is that people have been getting her name wrong then we should make that clear with something like "Often mistakenly called Esme". But I'd like to collect a few more examples first -- SteveCrook (talk) 14:27, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes, it should go in the text. For a while there I wondered if I wasn't being influenced by the recent death of the man who wrote "For Esmé – with Love and Squalor"... Rothorpe (talk) 14:35, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
- I've added a note to the Facebook group, asking if they know of any occasions where she was credited as Esme. I've also asked in a few other film groups I belong to. I'll let you know if anyone can find any -- SteveCrook (talk) 14:41, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
Right. My memory of 'Esme' would be from the Radio Times. Rothorpe (talk) 14:48, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
Well I've asked in lots of places where people know about her and her work. Nobody can find any information that she was ever credited or even known as Esme. I'm as sure as I can be that it's just a few cases where people have mis-spelt her name -- SteveCrook (talk) 22:31, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
- Fine. You suggested "Often mistakenly called Esme", and I think that's a good idea, given that Facebook has 'Esme'. Rothorpe (talk) 00:31, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
- Nice, thanks -- SteveCrook (talk) 11:00, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
Change of birth date
editReference for the new birth date? The IMD still gives 27.12.05. Rothorpe (talk) 15:56, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
- IMDB is not the most reliable of sources as has often been pointed out on here to me. --Shylocksboy (talk) 23:47, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
But you are? Rothorpe (talk) 02:20, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
- Here [2], [3] are two sources that say she was born in 1905, citing official records. Here is a link to Esma's birth registration on the NSW BDMs - it shows her birth was registered in 1906 which would indicate the 27/12/1905 date to be correct. Crisso (talk) 19:43, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
Excellent, thanks. Rothorpe (talk) 19:53, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
Why are the Brit Film Inst and some kiss & tell book "official" sources. The NSW BDM record is 7184/1906; which is about March 1906. (She had an older sister called Veta.) Donate $30 to NSW gov't and you can have the complete record. NSW gov't has a lot of hungry pregnant scum bags to take care of, so the money has to come from somewhere.220.244.89.140 (talk) 03:05, 16 October 2013 (UTC)
Last film
editThere's a contradiction: IMDB confirms she was in Hide & Seek, and there is a ref to a book, in which case her career date should be extended to 1964. Rothorpe (talk) 22:13, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
George Formby 'Trouble Brewing'

— Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.94.158.32 (talk) 09:22, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

Better known vs. best known
editGreetings Wikipedians (especially SteveCrook): This is a minor point, but I am still struggling with "better known as.." and "best known as..." early in the article. "Better known" than what? Something seems to be missing from that comparison. Her TV work can't be better known compared to her early film work, because the same sentence says she's best known for film work in the 30s through 50s. So I've come up with the following: "Although she frequently appeared on television in her latter years, Cannon is best known as a film actress, with a lengthy career in British productions from the 1930s to the 1950s." If nobody objects within a week, I'll make this change. Very truly yours, BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 11:57, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
- Hello [User:BuzzWeiser196|BuzzWeiser196], I just changed it from saying "she was primarily a film actress" to "she was best known as a film actress" trying to ease off the "primarily" as she was also known as a stage performer (as is outlined in the section on her Career). No comparison was intended. I didn't say "better known", only "best known" -- SteveCrook (talk) 14:13, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
- OK, [User:SteveCrook|SteveCrook]. Looks like we're in agreement on this, and nobody else commented so I made the change. By the by, I see you're in south London. I grew up in the Coombe neighborhood of Kingston/New Malden. What town are you from, if you don't mind me asking? I live in the US now. Regards, BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 12:36, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- I'm in sunny Morden (over towards the Raynes Park side). I'm currently living in the house that my grandad bought as new in about 1934. When he moved there from Wimbledon, people asked "Why are you moving to the country?" :) As I'm named after Grandad there's only ever been a Steve (or Stephen) Crook on the deeds. We used to be in Morden, Surrey but now Greater London has come out to meet us, although we're still am SM4 post-code, not a SW post-code -- SteveCrook (talk) 13:29, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- Small world. I recall Morden Underground station at the end of the Northern line. I was too young to drive and anywhere east of Raynes Park was unknown territory. Cheers, BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 12:31, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
- It still is mainly unknown territory :) As my dear old dad used to say of anywhere north of Watford "It's all North Thames Gas Board up there" :) -- SteveCrook (talk) 14:55, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
- Apparently the 57 bus from Traps Lane reaches Morden in just over 30 minutes! BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 23:44, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
