Emo hip hop or Emo rap?

edit

Emo hip hop or Emo rap?--Democratic Backsliding (talk) 19:14, 28 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Eh, I'd say Emo hip hop because although it is a little bit of a mouthful, it describes the genre well and has already been printed on a number of sources. After all, this is the emo movement of hip hop. SuperLuigi22 (talk) 22:16, 28 September 2017 (UTC)SuperLuigi22Reply

Emo rap for sure. Hip hip is a subculture, not a genre of music. Rap is the genre.--79.191.254.189 (talk) 14:25, 21 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me, Do emo hip hop and emo rap have difference? HONDA Gang (Talk) 08:45, 13 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Notability

edit

I think the sources are good enough to success notability and credibility. It has been majorly covered recently. I think we should remove the notability warning. Thoughts? SuperLuigi22 (talk|contribs) 20:19, 6 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

History

edit

When there is enough information to form a full "History" section, should Lil Peep's death be included? It doesn't have to do with the genre, but he was a pioneer of the genre, and a lot of people checked out this genre afterwards. SuperLuigi22 (talk|contribs) 07:03, 19 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

It depends if his death will affect this genre as a whole similar to how Kurt Cobain's death did to Grunge. Dekai Averett (talk) 01:50, 23 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Emo hip hopEmo rapWP:COMMONNAME, I checked numerous sources and fail to see any mention of "emo hip hop", although "emo rap" does occasionally appear Ilovetopaint (talk) 07:55, 27 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Oppose, they're both commonly used terms when referring to the subject matter but since wikipedia has the page for hip hop on "hip hop music" rather than "rap music" it seems more consistent to keep it this way. Besides, rap is more just the vocal style in hip hop itself, rather than a genre in it's own right. Issan Sumisu (talk) 22:25, 30 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm for it. It is a more commonly used term and plenty if pages have "rap" instead of "hip hop". Mumble rap, Soundcloud rap, cloud rap, pop-rap, and gangsta rap are a few that come to mind. Dekai Averett (talk) 04:50, 31 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
I used to be against this, but really, this is what I heard most often. Rap isn't a genre, but it's just a suffix for other hip hop genres such as cloud rap and gangsta rap, so it's fine here too. Also, emo rap sounds a bit better. SuperLuigi22 (talk|contribs) 20:51, 31 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Drake, Childish Gambino, Tyler the Creator

edit

Is there a distinction that can be made between ¨emo rap¨ as in the genre and ¨emo rap¨ as in the loose term used to describe emotional hip hop music? The artists above don´t truly make this style of music and if we come to the consensus that they DO then the genres origins have to be pushed back. Dekai Averett (talk) 19:41, 15 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

There's a lot more than those three, if we're going off of how the page is describing this style; as a fusion of emo and hip hop; then the only artists that actually fit that are X, Lil Peep and Nothing, Nowhere (there are obviously more who don't have pages, like $uicideboy$ and Brennan Savage), but very few of the artists mentioned on this page have elements of emo past sad lyrics. It's definitely a dilemma but I'm not sure exactly how to fix it. Issan Sumisu (talk) 20:00, 15 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
This article by GQ actually mentions both Drake and Lil Peep as being emo rap, but says that Lil Peep's sound is a progression because of actual elements of emo rather than just sad lyrics, that might help in some way. Issan Sumisu (talk) 20:29, 15 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
This has also bothered me. I know that the rule is that if the information is confirmed by sources, then it is "correct" by Wikipedia standards, but this infuriates me to no end because even though an ill-informed source says an artist is a certain style, even if they are not at all, they still get added. Tyler, the Creator and Childish Gambino don't have any emo elements whatsoever and Drake has only influenced the style and isn't actually a part of this. I wish we could just get some more informed sources. SuperLuigi22 (talk|contribs) 22:45, 17 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Dekai Averett, Issan Sumisu, and SuperLuigi22: Just because something can be reliably sourced doesn't mean it must be included (see WP:ONUS), and if consensus is formed that certain artists should not be listed, they could be removed despite having citations. Another option is simply to increase the threshold for the number of references needed for inclusion; finding two or three sources wouldn't be difficult for artists such as Lil Peep, but it would eliminate the "flukes" of one writer deciding—against conventional opinion—that artist x fits within a genre. LifeofTau 02:01, 19 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes! That's a good idea for keeping those artists out. SuperLuigi22 (talk|contribs) 20:35, 19 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

So are we moving forward with requiring multiple sources for the Notable artists? CalvesofGod (talk) 09:42, 16 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

I've already mentioned Brennan Savage, but he doesn't currently have a Wikipedia page, so we'll have to wait until he does. Issan Sumisu (talk) 07:26, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Mumble rap/Soundcloud rap

edit

The current reference on the mumble rap page (previously the Soundcloud rap page, but was recently moved) to say that mumble rap and Soundcloud rap are synonyms (www.theguardian.com/music/2018/apr/05/lil-xan-total-xanarchy-review-moronic-rap-to-make-you-feel-old also cites emo rap as meaning the same thing as those two terms. To say that two of the three terms are synonymous but disregarding the other would be original research, meaning that (since that is the only citation that says all three are the same thing) either all three should be merged or none should be merged. Emo rap artists

edit

We should make "List of emo rap artists" pages. Let's make it. HONDA Gang (Talk) 08:48, 13 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

This doesn't feel like emo music.

edit

Emo rap is supposed to be a subgenre of emo music, which itself is a subgenre of rock music, but I've seen two music videos for songs allegedly of the emo rap genre, and in neither one of them did I hear any rock sounds. (For anyone who's curious, they were The Way Life Goes by Lil Uzi Vert and Betrayed by Lil Xan.) Is this an error? 2600:6C5A:417F:794E:9DC4:6F4E:A87F:3203 (talk) 21:20, 22 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

I understand that there are sources stating that he is an emo rapper, and that "Mood" is his biggest success, but it's not even emo rap - even on its own page. It seems a little weird to me that we're really making a highlight of a non-emo rap song on the genre's page, and I think the content in that area should be reworked or removed. dannymusiceditor oops 00:09, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
