Connection?

edit

"After a visit that same month to the hospital by tap dancer and drummer Marion Joseph "Taps" Miller, Christian declined in health ..." Is there a link between these two facts and if so what is it? Did Taps do something to further the decline of Charlie's health? Or are these just coincidental markers in the chronology. This statement is unclear to me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.180.44.133 (talk) 17:26, 10 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, there is a connection, but there is also liability. 2600:8803:5C0C:B600:E546:1C3C:7DAD:A97D (talk) 16:18, 29 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

I agree..there is a fairly recent book out about him which said at one point he was being visited in the hospital by friends who brought him marijuana and girls which may be the reference..I doubt that`s what killed him..he was the greatest electric guitarist that ever lived in my opinion. I just downloaded a four-album Charlie Christian box set from emusic so I'll have some stuff for this article soon. Ortolan88 03:55, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)

'41 Minton's sessions, Django, etc

edit

Those credits are wrong, and the titles were added later to avoid royalty payments. "Kerouac" is "Exactly Like You" and Christian isn't even on it or either "Stardust" that is included in some Minton's sets. One of the pianists is Kenny Kersey. The trumpet is Joe Guy except "Lips" Page On "Lips" Flips." I believe L. Valdes' site "Solo Flight" has the personnel on a discography.- KC

There seems to be some debate if Theolonious Monk was in fact the pianist in the recorded 1941 Minton's Playhouse sessions. The Charlie Christian discography at http://www3.nbnet.nb.ca/hansen/Charlie/ccdisc.htm says no.

The bio on the same site gives guitarist Mary Osborne as a source for Charlie playing Django Reinhardt solos in 1938. http://www3.nbnet.nb.ca/hansen/Charlie/ccbio3.htm

btw, Does anyone know how the tune called Kerouac got the name? Jack would have been a virtually unknown sailor at the time. A jazz fan to be sure, who maybe made the scene at Mintons, but i doubt he was someone Christian would have named a head arrangement for.

Jerry Newman was friends with Kerouac and named the tune in his honor to avoid royalties for "Exactly Like You." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.88.166.20 (talk) 04:42, 13 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:LesterYoung.jpg

edit

Image:LesterYoung.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:09, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • I have tried to load photos and they keep getting deleted. I know family members and biographers and have permission to use photos. One in particular is not even copyrighted and in the public domain, but somebody who thinks they know better keeps pulling it down.Erviltnec 02:57, 7 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Hot" Jazz

edit

The link to "hot" jazz just links to the article on jazz. Is there any way to fix this to actually make it explain something? - The Fwanksta (talk) 05:05, 3 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hot jazz pertains to the early period of jazz prior to the 1930s swing movement. Mainly, all jazz, pre-1935, was hot jazz.Dogru144 (talk) 03:58, 9 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Comments on his significance

edit

The first paragraph(s) of the article had very bold assertions about Christian's importance. He certainly was a Genius, but it is essential that we provide references for statments on his importance, especially when referring to "many critics" (a WP:weasel word). nonetheless, the material is very important -we can restore it if we just get some references. I've saved the comments immediately below:

cool and modern jazz.[citation needed] Many critics believe that he alone is the link between hot and modern jazz — that there is jazz before Charlie Christian and jazz after Charlie Christian.[citation needed]

Are George T. Simon, John Hammond and Leonard Feather weasels? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.24.4.98 (talk) 00:32, 24 August 2008 (UTC) Funny, the selected quote uses "many critics." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.88.162.129 (talk) 20:24, 12 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

The fact that he was pretty much the first electric guitar player of any kind or significance is enough to include him as relevant. Lonepilgrim007 (talk) 05:12, 25 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

wiki

edit

I realize this is a wiki, but please try to limit the subject to Charlie Christian and not external links for guitar courses. A whole slew of valid links was destroyed in someone's attempt to delete them. Fat fingers

edit

I don't know who's doing it, but you've made a mess out of this article. For example in the first paragraph it cites a source, Columbia's "Solo Flight" LP with notes by Gene Lees and someone put a "citation need" bracket following it. This was fine until somebody thought they needed to put their fat fingers in here. I know some of the sources personally and am one myself - who are you and where are you getting your info from?Erviltnec (talk) 04:04, 29 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Gravesite

edit

The Fannin County Historical Museum is aware of this dispute and is trying to remedy it. The present site of the marker and stone were based on Gary Don Rhodes documentary ( http://www.amazon.com/Solo-Flight-Genius-Charlie-Christian/dp/6304324359 ) with little investigation and no eyewitnesses. The dispute is brought forth by Craig McKinney based on eyewitness accounts and descriptions by the family members. Erviltnec (talk) 21:30, 29 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hackjob

edit

I took two of the photos on this page myself. Someone deleted one of them. I want to say fuck you very much. You obviously have no respect for history and could have contacted me prior to the deletion. I have an urge to delete the whole entry. Erviltnec (talk) 21:32, 1 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
