The pronunciation of Boberg's surname
edit@Wolfdog and Nardog: Sorry to bother you. Do you know how Boberg pronounces his surname? Is it /ˈboʊbɜːrɡ/, /ˈbɒbɜːrɡ/ or Swedish-style /ˈbuːbɜːrɡ/, /ˈbuːbɛərɡ/, /ˈbuːbɛri/ (dangerously close to blueberry :P), etc.? Also, should we include the corresponding Swedish pronunciation? - I always read it as the first one you gave and I can't imagine it possibly being anything but the first two. I've never heard an English speaker pronounce Swedish ⟨berg⟩ as anything but /bɜːrɡ/, be it Thunberg, Strindberg or Bergman, and according to Forebears there are 1.2K people with the surname in the United States compared to 1.8K in Sweden, so it must have been anglicized. Re 2nd question: Does he have direct heritage or connection to Sweden? If not, I don't see why in the world you would want to do that. Nardog (talk) 14:08, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
- I always assumed the first (or possibly second), but I have no idea. Wolfdog (talk) 14:22, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. I guess we can't proceed without sources, then. BTW, my bet is on /ˈboʊbɜːrɡ/ too. The second syllable must be /-bɜːrɡ/ because I can't imagine an RP speaker saying /ˈbəʊbəɡ/ (~bow-bug /ˈboʊbərɡ/), though maybe I'm wrong. I guess the final lenis /ɡ/ prevents the vowel from becoming reduced to /ə/. Kbb2 (ex. Mr KEBAB) (talk) 17:39, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
