Sport
editI'm not the expert on it, but this article needs some sport content 84.203.165.49 (talk) 17:25, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- You don't need to be an expert to edit here. If you wish to add sporting material, Ballydesmond GAA and the 'interweb' should get you started. RashersTierney (talk) 17:37, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Name and date of change
editIt's not clear when or by what authority the name of the town was changed from Kingwilliamstown to Ballydesmond.
- This memorial stone says the name of the town (as distinct from the townland) was changed in 1938.
- The Revealer issue 132, page 11, item 32 says the Department of Posts and Telegraphs changed the post town name in 1948.
It's not clear whether the name of the surrounding townland is Ballydesmond, Kingwilliamstown, or Williamstown. It's not clear whether the name of the surrounding electoral division / district electoral division [ED / DED] is Kingwilliamstown or Williamstown.
- By S.I. No. 138/1951 - Local Government (Change of Name of Townland) Order, 1951 The name of "[t]he townland named Kingwilliamstown in the district electoral division of Williamstown in the administrative county of Cork" was changed to Ballydesmond
- But in S.I. No. 395/2012 - Placenames (County Cork) Order 2012 townland no.3537 is still called Kingwilliamstown. (Townland no.5248 is called Williamstown, but that is in the DED of Youghal Rural; see a 1961 OS map and logainm data).
- logainm.ie has Kingwilliamstown for the townland and Williamstown for the ED.
- The DED is called Kingwilliamstown in another 1961 OS map but Williamstown (ED no.386) in S.I. No. 395/2012.
- The OSI Mapviewer has Kingwilliamstown for the townland. (It also has "Kingwilliamstown" as a settlement name separate from "Ballydesmond", but that's an OCR error for "Kingwilliamstown Br[idge]" from the earlier paper map.)
One possible scenario that fits the preceding data:
- In 1951, the DED and townland were both called "Kingwilliamstown", so S.I. No. 138/1951 was null as it referred to the DED by the wrong name
- At some time between 1951 and 2002, the DED name was changed to "Williamstown", but the townland name was not.
But the DED was called "Williamstown" since at least the 1901 census
